Ragdoll (2021)
Brilliant
The writing in this show is superb. The little quips & dialog are so disarming and charming.
The whole thing is so well done-unexpected twists multiple times an episode.
No idea why the bad ratings, but give this show a watch, you won't regret it.
Reminiscence (2021)
Blame the cook
I found myself angry at how bad this was. If it hadn't had A-list actors, it never would have gotten out of B-movie status. The inane shoegum narration, the flat line delivery, the stuttering pacing, the from-nowhere crescendo at the end where suddenly their love upheaved the world (wait, there was a world)? Oh and wait. Thandie Newton's character has a surprise daughter to go reconnect with and made whole-have we been in Westworld all along? The actors and concept had promise... But when you start with all the right ingredients and still make something terrible, I guess you have to blame the cook, in this case writer-director Lisa Joy. I'll be steering clear of her projects from now on.
Man of Steel (2013)
10 or so thoughts while being assaulted by this movie
1) This pregnancy looks like it hurts a lot and the baby looked metal. Is she really giving birth to a steel baby?
2) That's a lot of destruction.
2) No way all the people made it out of those buildings
3) Superman could probably just spin the opposite direction and stop that tornado.
3) Could Superman make himself dizzy?
4) Why do the planes all crash down the center of main street?
4) The bad alien ship looks like an evil turtle
4) So is Superman flying or just jumping with good accuracy?
4) Weird that they put the scene learning Superman has all the baby DNA in him AFTER they come to Earth to demand him. What did they want him for anyway?
5) Lois and Clark went straight to codependent
6) Wouldn't that break Diane Lane's shoulder?
7) Diane Lane, Lois Lane. Weird.
7) Lots of throwing through empty offices. Maybe it's a comment on desk jobs.
8) That pointy bowl cut is kinda badass.
8) I should cut my hair.
9) That's going to take a long time to clean up. If Superman really cared he would clean all that up.
9) I want to fall asleep now
10) Do the characters have PTSD yet? I have PTSD just from watching.
11 (Bonus from after) The people they hired to write these glowing 2020 reviews did an admirable job mixing up their marching orders to say it was "epic," and "underrated."
11) The review writers tried harder than the movie writers.
12) Thank gosh it's over.
Absentia: In Quo Ego Vado Vos (2020)
Stupidest line ever
"There was a new guy. He'd been with us a while..."
Lazy writing. Unmotivated sex scene (Aw hon, you're a murderer? Let me come straddle you).
Ready to take a hike? (Start out sprinting)
(Throws affair in his face) (He storms out) (She looks frustrated that didn't go like she expected)
Ozark: Civil Union (2020)
This opening
Where the brother/substitute teacher is introduced is one of the best three minutes of television ever.
Briarpatch (2019)
In a new genre all by itself
I loved this show-something about it was just right. It's a noir with some lightness to it, not in comedy but in the atmosphere. The world it creates is a little hyper-real in way I didn't know I wanted, but found this one of the few shows I would faithfully look forward to the next episode each week. I read a lot of critics comparing this to other shows but I think they miss the way Briarpatch defines a new genre all for itself. Dawson is so airtight this seems like the role she was meant to play, and the Spivey character is complexly likeable-endearing and the definition of quirk but deserving of not escaping his past. I hope there are future seasons and more shows like it. Well done.
