Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
A complete parody
Freddy has been turned into a complete parody of himself and I don't think this is a total failure, this comedic aspect about Freddy has been present since the first film, it just feels like the horror is lacking in this one.
Emily in Paris: Emily in Paris (2020)
Charisma and clichés
Seems like a good premise with surrounded by clichés, charismatic and contemporary. Taking this to Paris gives the show it's own charm.
The fact of the clichés doesn't make this a bad show and we are just starting so we'll have to se how this all develops.
Yaga. Koshmar tyomnogo lesa (2020)
Some good Ideas really bad performed
Some of the ideas un the film are really good but there are not many situations where they are well performed. It falls into a lot of some of our most 'loved' clichés like: the chosen one, the girl who is different and can take care of herself, the bully becomes friend and so on, there was a point un the movie when I was already wondering what the next cliché to appear would be.
The movie actually looks quite well, it has some great shots and frames that were really well done, some scenes really are disturbing in the middle of this inconsistent story and I think they really can save this film, at least a little.
The characters were, in my opinion, so annoying and dislikeable because of how cartoonish and unreal they can be, from the start of the movie I hated our 'hero' from almost the start until the very last second, no matter how much the movie tries to make me believe he has grown or something, he is just the same plain and maleable to conveniente character he was from the start.
Chernobyl (2019)
Raw, strong and eye-opening
I just had a complete change of perspective about Chernobyl, this is a great commemoration to every single sacrifice made to solve the consequenses of lies.
Other than some slow spots here and there, the whole series are good all around, I would not ve able to give it less than ten stars.
Chernobyl: Open Wide, O Earth (2019)
Strong and disturbing
This one started kind of weak, I didn't have that mucho interest un what was happening, but ir kept getting more and more intense, we got into the rooms of those affected by the radiation, we saw suffering and dime explicit pictures that could scare somebody out, plus, the subplot of the investigation in the hospital is something I really liked. Aldo, those naked miners. At the end, I can't blame this espisode for the slow start, this is part of this situation, it's slow, the characters are stressed and desperated, just as we are.
Chernobyl: 1:23:45 (2019)
The truth
This show is presented as a way of telling the story from a lot of the perspectives, from the citizens, the people working un the planta, the ones trying to fight the problem. Either way, we end up in a story with no fear of telling the truth, showing ya the bad decisions that lead to not solving the problem, the repercussions, politics, just about a bit of everything.
Iron Man (2008)
Tony Stark has a heart
A great origin story.
As of today, this movie is one of the best expressions of the so called "Marvel formula".
The character of Tony Stark is one of the most charismatic ones this universe has to offer. He experimented an unexpectedly successful growth, it was of course expected that this egocentric and selfish character would have a change of heart in order to become a hero, but I didn't expect how early un the film ir would Take place and how it would affect the following events. This ended up being possitive, leaving us to the expectations on how would he succeed to make a change.
The relationship with Pepper Pots is something that has still a long way to go, and the producers know this, thats why we are shown how there is something going on but we don't really get this couple out of nowhere, which is perfect.
A film about a change of heart, a man who discovers the damage he's done by being a victim of it, the rest are special effects and superhero stuff, which is amazing too.
Nosotros los Nobles (2013)
A mexican movie like any other
I've read some reviews complaining about how this film is the same as any other mexican movie, and it is, it is in the same genre as most of the latest mexican movies (Comedy, Romance), it exploits some of the most popular clichés and stereotypes and takes some predictable choices in the story, but all of this is done correctly, it is done organically and succeeds to stay entertaining an relatable to most of the public of the more generic mexican movies.
The problems are established right at the beginning of the movie, we get the situation and we can be related, I mean, just about any family with enough money has this kind of problems, but the other side of the coin is also portrayed through the side characters.
The film has logic, we know some of the events might seem a bit over the top, but it is all something that can be done in this context, there was not a single moment I thought "Why is this happening?" throughout he whole film, which is one of my most common thoughts most of the newest mexican movies.
Just to end, I must say, yes, this is a mexican movie doing most of the same things any other one does, but it does it the right way, and it's great.
A Star Is Born (2018)
An story enhanced by music
I totally liked this film, even though I felt it lacked in development. The music is amazing and succeeds at representing how the story is playing. Ally's style is how her change is presented to us while, on the other side, Jack notices this change and takes it negatively, as she has distanciated from heartwarming to commercial.
We are not presented with a main conflict to face, it is more about a rollercoaster, problems here and there, Jack's alcoholism being one of the main catalysts of them all.
I must say, at the end of it all, it didn't move me as much as I thought, I didn't understand some of the decisions Jack took, but I guess that is the point of it all, sometimes you can't really understand other's problems and the decisions they make.
I loved and hated the relationship throughout the movie, which I see as a positive point, we were supposed to love it when the characters did, and hate it when they did. Well, this is it. The music is just, perfectly fitting for this film, and totally enhances the experience.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Amazing but incomplete
I loved this film so much, maybe it isn't the most realistic but it is not supposed to. The plot may not be engaging for all but for me it was, just an almost murdered woman who lost, or at least thinks she did, her unborn daughter seeking for revenge on those who were involved.
Some of the shots are just amazing, the action is impecable and constant throughout the film, there are almost no flat points, plus we get some doses of comedy here and there.
Either way, even though I liked this so much it still feels a bit incomplete, maybe some scenes were longer than they could have been, therefore making this movie shorter or adding a bit more information, development to the characters or building a stronger structure for the plot.
The fact that this story is also divided in two parts contributes to making the story feeling incomplete, as the film was coming to an end I noticed it as it was slowing down and, somehow, closing this first half of the story, but it just didn't feel all that right to me, I feels, well, incomplete, and it is, but I just wish it wasn't so noticeable.
I made my complaints look a lot bigger than they were, this is just an amazing film, socking from the beginning, exciting action, an incredible and strong protagonist, good humour and a well managed plot (outside of what I've already said). One of the best action films I've ever seen.
Bishôjo senshi Sêrâ Mûn: Usagi no omoi wa eien ni! Atarashiki tensei (1993)
Perfect bittersweet
All the events of the season culminate here. We are facing a Serena who has gone from being a "silly and happy girl" to being a girl with a duty too great for her and she knows it, together with the previous chapter we were shown how she would prefer to deliver the silver crystal and return to their normal life, before risking their lives and that of their friends, but they refuse, since it is something that only they can do. It is unfair how some girls are entrusted with such a big task, but it is something that must be done, it is what was being done throughout the series and we were not fully aware.
Serena's friends died one by one in the previous chapter, which gives this chapter the boost, gives Serena the determination to fight for what her friends tried to protect. All of this feels much stronger having seen the ties that had formed between them throughout the season.
Now Serena must face her love from a past life, who is controlled by Queen Beryl. Who is attacked by Endymion to be healed, this rather than really defeat her physically, is something emotional, since she feels defeated, she feels that it is unfair as she is defeated by love for another person of the man whom she loves.
In the end we meet a Queen Beryl who completely united with the evil energy, plans to turn the world into a dark and empty place, with the idea that this world is already stained and there is no way to cure it.
And we meet again with a Serena who is alone, but who carries the determination and wishes of her friends, who in spirit support her.
This is where, at the end of it all, in the midst of the explosion that defeated Queen Beyl, we heard Serena's voice, talking about what her simple life was like, how easy and happy she was as a common girl of 14 years and we expresses its desire to become one again.
And wake up, it's another day, she was late for school again, everything is normal, but there are no memories of what she lived with her friends, they have a new opportunity. It is the perfect bittersweet ending.
Gekijô-ban - Bishôjo senshi Sêrâ Mûn R (1993)
Sailor Moon: An expanded episode
The promise of the rose feels like a special episode, barely lasting an hour. A special episode packed with action in the style of the series, also loaded with the emotions that characterize it.
The film takes place somewhere between the events of the second season, after Rini discovers that Serena is Sailor Moon, but before going to the future, although certain differences can be noticed, since just the character of Rini shows an attitude different as for Serena, to whom she shows admiration while in the series this is less evident.
Given the short time of the film, from the first minutes it has a definite course, it has raised the doubts that it wants to raise and it has given us the necessary information to give importance to the situation and later understand the feelings of the characters. There are many simple threads where we are shown the events and their repercussions, but they are given to us in different order so that when we find out it is something new, as for the characters.
The best example of this:
* Fiore, the antagonist of the film, is driven by the idea that Darien is by his side, trying to protect him from the abandonment of others, being that he considers him his only friend, although it seems that Fiore has other kinds of feelings for him. .
* Darien, who in his childhood was in an accident where his parents died and he lost his memory, felt alone in the world, until a friend appeared, Fiore, who had to leave, Darien gave him a rose as a gesture of their friendship.
* Serena, against whom Fiore develops the greatest rejection, being the one who "took" Darien from her and does not deserve to be with him. Right at the end of the film we discover that a sad Darien was crying in his hospital room, when a little Serena comes to comfort him, she lays his head on his legs (in a way that was shown to us earlier in the film that is also done today). She hands a rose to Darien, straight from the bouquet she was carrying to give to her mother as a gift, who had just given birth to a little brother.
Also one of the most important points about the movie is compassion, the fact that Sailor Moon's intentions are not directly to kill anyone to fix things. She would have preferred to surrender and leave everything in order to save those who are important to her, even if she had to sacrifice everything, she is not driven by anything other than her desire to protect her loved ones.
In Sailor Moon this has always been very important, the growth of Serena and the weight of the relationships between her characters, the ties they have formed and what they have gone through, the faith in other people and the desire to do good , and this is why I love Sailor Moon.
Forrest Gump (1994)
A journey of transformation... for me
This movie just ended up giving me a lot of hope, feeling as a better person.
Forrest Gump, a kid with a little deficient intelligence, but born with the blessing of a mother who would do anything for him to succeed and his own innocence.
I started this movie feeling sad about the situation this kid was born, slowly developing empathy for his situation and the discrimination he had to face and ended up admiring how someone who isn't aware of what he is doing can change everything.
I laughed, I cried, I got mad, I got excited. I just could feel anything because this movie puts our loved Forrest trough so many situations you wouldn't imagine.
This is the story about someone no one had hopes on, they even put him down, but when nobody believed in you in the first place, you can only exceed their expectations.
Star Wars (1977)
A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, there was a movie of it's time ahead
I consider this a groundbreaking movie, I just can't imagine how it would have been like to experience this kind of sci-fi back in the time it was released. The excitement because of the special effects or the kind of story being told. I will just be left with my ideas about me watching this movie at it's prime, without having any idea of what's happening and what will come. Even today, this movie can be compared with some of the newest movies and seem innovative.
I'm mad at me for not giving this movie a chance before.
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
We need to talk about this movie
A movie that, at first had me kind of dizzy between all the jumps in time it has, but eventually started to tie all together making up an impactful story in which we might not get all the answers we are looking for, just like our characters.
Maybe the movie is a little complicated and difficult to understand, and can have different perceptions.
Maybe we won't understand the reason why Kevin (Ezra Miller) is the way he is, maybe there is no reason, but we will feel the way Eva (Tilda Swinton) handles this relationship.
Kevin just seems to have been against his mother since birth, as the movie shows, this may be influenciated by how this movie takes place from Eva's memories and therefore her perception, but he undoubtly has been against her since he could reason, we don't know why, but it will be taken to really high levels, maybe too high, as he develops an "evil" so big we don't even know if he is doing all of this for his mother or is now just doing it with intensions only he can understand.
On the other hand, Eva is our protagonist, the whole movie is based on her perception, her memories, what she is facing, we see her not knowing what to do, what to expect, how to react, she is the one we will know the most.
Maybe my review is a little complicated, strangely structured and difficult to get, but so is the movie, and it is worth a try.
Beautiful Boy (2018)
Beautiful boy, Beautiful movie
Beautiful Boy, a story about the ups and downs of a family hit by drugs, the highs and lows, relapses and recoveries, just as any true story does. Well, it is a true story, based on the memories of both father and son. All tied together with jumps between the past and present so we get more attached.
The movie will be centered on the family, mostly the father, David Sheff (Steve Carrell), and the restless deal with his son, Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet), and his addiction.
From the beginning we are presented to a father in the search of help for a son who he doesn't recognize anymore.
This is our start point, now it's time to know our characters as we connect with Nic, a teenager who had passed through the divorce of his parents. He was a seemingly happy boy, had a good relationship with his dad, was smart, sensitive, and bright, or so it seemed.
Just let yourself discover how he felt drugs got him where he felt like nothing else could, how eventually his own father can't recognize him, and the impact he will make in his life and those around him, as everybody has something to learn. Not only him, but his father, who has to understand not everything can be controlled and not everything is as you can perceive.
For me, this movie was a trip of emotions with a slow start in which I got to know the characters, but you keep to get attached to the throughout the movie, as it keeps showing us some of their memories and you see them as they face the consequences of their own actions, like getting into drugs, and those they love.
Some questions:
Is addiction a disease?
Whose fault is it?
How can it be treated?
Can we help?
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
A good introduction
The movie introduces us to Steve Rogers, a character with a below average physical strength but an above average wish to protect others, defend his country. We are shown how Steve can't stand doing less than others for his country, how he can't just stay comfortably at his home while there are people dying to protect others, this determination is one of the best aspects this movie has.
From the other side, the movie isn't able to completely convince me how worthy Steve is, which is the main point of this movie, showing us why Steve Rogers is worthy of acquiring this power, while others are not. It was already decided from the first time the doctor saw Steve he would be the one to get the Super Soldier serum, but the movie could have shown us more of why he is truly worthy. He is never really put in real danger, a situation in which he takes a risk to save others (there is the scene with a fake bomb, just imagine it taken even forward, Steve attempting to save someone even though his strength isn't enough, using his intelligence and even almost dying for it, then I would be completely convince he is more worthy than anyone else, but I wasn't).
The side characters are pretty average, serving the regular rolls: the love interest, the best friend and some extras to keep the plot running. I don't think they are really memorable and the relationship with Peggy Carter came out of nowhere just because it was supposed to happen.
The villain isn't that memorable either, he never attempts to do something that directly harms Captain America, he is just somewhere trying to do something else for some reason. He is supposedly related to the Captain because he also used the serum, but it had other effects on him because it was not ready, and that's all, they don't even have a fight you will remember when you finish the movie.
In conclusion, this is a very simple story that could have been done in less time, or, if they really had to do 2 hours, it could have been better executed. This is a good movie, it just has some points it could have been better at.
Secret Obsession (2019)
This is a movie you´ve already seen, only quite more boring
A LOT OF SPOILERS, ACTUALLY THE WHOLE MOVIE IS HERE
The movie is centered on Jennifer, who is being chased by someone trying to kill her or kidnap her. Something goes wrong and ends in an accident in which Jennifer is seriously injured and is sent to a hospital by some secondary characters without major importance for the plot.
Jennifer wakes up and, oh surprise!, she has amnesia. It turns out that a man arrived at the hospital claiming to be her husband (or not?). Obviously from this moment we already know that this man is lying, either because you saw him in the trailer or simply because this movie is too predictable and gives us too many hints.
The rest of the movie is the process of Jennifer figuring out that this man is actually a stalker which had been obsessed with her since God knows when (Secret Obsession) and some night he just decided to kill Jennifer's most beloved human beings (because, why not?) and her in the process, which takes us to the beginning of the movie with that accident and all.
With a lot of luck from Jennifer and the detective (who unveils the mystery half movie late) they manage to defeat this not-husband and live happily ever after.
The movie has some salvageable points:
1.It does try to confuse us with whether this man was or not the responsible of the accident or if he is really Jennifer's husband. BUT, it is gave to us just some minutes later that he is the bad guy, just because we are shown how he attacks the other man we could be suspecting to be the bad guy.
2. It tries to make us have some kind of bod with the characters, like with the detective (who has lost his daughter and could´t find her) or by showing us some memories from Jennifer. For me this just wasn't enough and I didn't attach to the characters.
So this is it, a bunch of things you´ve seen before, but it could have been better.
Brightburn (2019)
I really wanted to like it way more (6.5/10⭐)
This kind of contain spoilers so be careful...
The movie was not bad, but I really expected more. At the begining I wasn't very exited but my expectations started to build as I saw more of the trailers and noticed who was involved in this movie. It offers a fresh approach on the alien theme, giving it a more relatable perspective (making it seem as part of us and not just a monster with the intention of scaring us) and, as I've heard, giving a twist to the Superman plot. I liked the idea, but I think it wasn't executed quite well. First of all, I didn't make a good connection with the characters as to matter whatever happened to them, yes, they try to connect with us through the idea of the "parents" not being able to have a baby and then receiving it, but it wasn't really that explored. Also, Brandon, I think there is a big issue with him, he just suddenly seems to be a different person, one moment he is a little scary boy bullied at school, the next one he is already the manipulator monster we see till the end of the movie, they try to justify this with that ship thing talking to him (kind of weird it waited twelve years to start giving him messages) but it doesn't make sense this can just turn him into wanting to "take the world" in some nights compared to the whole life his parents had been trying to teach him good morals (it can be seen during the movie they were actually good parents). At the end, he was completely unbeatable, there wasn't a single moment I was shocked or worried of what was going to happen, I knew he wouldn't get hurt or in danger since he is completely immune to anything and he was too intelligent to even be harmed for his only weakness. I also knew anybody was going to die, this child had no feelings apparently (except for hate) so nothing could stop him from killing anything getting in his way. At the end there IS a scene that can make me wonder what could have happened, but we already know how the movie actually ended so...
The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
La Llorona, more like La gritona (The shouting woman)
This movie represents an injustice to the legend of La Llorona turning it into a parade of screams and cheap horror. The movie drops a lot of the most representative aspects we all remember about La Llorona which made her, well, her, like her most representative cry "Ay mis hijos" (oh, my children) which is in almost every version of the legend (at least in all the versions I've heard) and the fact that they turned her into a constant screamer made me very disappointed because eventos the name of the movie becomes kind of a lie. I must say at the start the movie catched my attention with the origin of the legend but the turned into a generic American horror movie. I honestly would not be able to distinguish this movie from any other one, which is kind of sad as this movie had the opportunity to be unique.
