The Doom Generation (1995)
Dark, weird and oh so trashy (but that's good)
This road trip movie spins it's wheels for 90 minutes and doesn't really go anywhere. Extreme violence, kinky sex and the creamy skin and red lips of Rose (Ms. Marilyn Manson) McGowan keep you interested but in the end you realize it's been 90 minutes of your life that you can never reclaim. Enjoyable as a second film in a "road-trip" double feature with "Kalifornia".
El tesoro de las cuatro coronas (1983)
OK, if seen in 3D
I remember this movie being shown endlessly on HBO on Saturday afternoons in the 80's. Clearly trying to cash in on "Raiders of the Lost Ark", the only thing this film had going for it was the 3D and this is sadly missing on the video version. Strings are completely visible, repititous scenes of objects being poked at the camera and bad dubbing make for a difficult watch. Too bad MST3K didn't get a hold on this one.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
This Is What All Films Should Be Like.
As a child of age 13 when this film was released, I saw it three times a week for the entire summer. This is near perfect filmmaking. Harrison Ford is perfect as Indiana Jones. I can't even think of anyone who would have been a better choice. The action is non-stop and the special effects are top-notch. It's everything an escapist action film should be.
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Thoroughly entertaining, but...
Although thoroughly entertaining and one of my childhood favorites I couldn't rate this movie a ten. A slow first half (I know, build characters) grinds to a halt with the sappy ballad sung to Charlie by Mrs. Bucket. It takes the appearance of Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) to get things moving again but momentum is lost a second time as the movie slows down after the "fizzy lifting drinks" scene. The middle third of the film, though, makes everything forgiveable. In all, a timeless movie to be enjoyed by everyone. Best viewed as a double feature with "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" in an evil-film-disguised-as-a-childrens-movie theme.
