Tough cookie meets tough cookie
Miles-1019 May 2019
Ordinarily, Erica Shepherd plays the clever mouse while Agent Keaton plays the self-satisfied cat who doesn't have his mouse completely boxed in but thinks he does. While this dynamic continues in the background, Shepherd meets her match in Congresswoman Bell (Margaret Colin) in a role unusual for Colin these days. She gets to be the tough cookie who knows Shepherd's number, but Shepherd knows Bell's number, too. Watching them play off each other is more dramatically rewarding than usual. I can only wish that Bell becomes a regular, but I suppose this was a one-off.

What's a child's life worth to a mother?

Warning: Spoilers
There are two shows of this genre currently running that are, in my opinion, above and beyond the rest. They are ... The Blacklist and The Enemy Within. The later of which this review concerns is beautifully scripted, acted and directed, with tremendous performances by Erica Shepherd, played by Jennifer Carpenter, and her co-star, Will Keaton played by Morris Chestnut. They make for a fascinating, albeit unlikely, duo who join forces to take down a sinister terrorist, Mikail Tal, played by Lev Gorn who is hellbent on destroying the CIA operatives responsible for the deaths of his two brothers, among other dastardly deeds of unimaginable mayhem. Shepherd does a great job weaving in and out of the gray area of treason as she tries to protect her daughter at any and all cost. The most interesting question the show raises is this: How far would any one of us go to protect our children even if it meant committing treason to do so? Shepherd gives Tal the names of the CIA operatives involved in the bombing of his family in exchange for the sparing of her daughter's life. But the nagging question for me is, why then did she not immediately call the FBI to get protection for the agents before they were dispatched? This is but one piece of the puzzle we'll have to wait for as of the "sequestered" episode.
