Great inventive episode
Sidney1015 January 2020
I was dreading this thought here we go another lame filler episode. I was wrong it was full of tension, the camera effects really added to it. It was so refreshing taking us back to the start from a different view point. Could have been easily been a movie. Well done, really enjoyed it.

One of the better episodes (ignore the millennial trolls)
fatal_coates30 November 2019
Unsure if I have ever reviewed an episode of a show before, but all the unwarranted hate.. forced my hand.

Some people just can't hack a story that explores deeper than the initial plot. This episode on it's own, is better than half the Horror films you see in cinema. They could make an entire series off this one episode.

Seeing these events from the beginning once again.. from another group's perspective, is always VERY welcome.

Well done to the Defiance actress, Nicole Muñoz on holding her own.

Bravo writers. Bring on more .. Be different!

am I the only one who liked this ep ?
bmallory-224 November 2019
I pretty much don't care too about the main storyline since they put all this mythology with dark ones, elder etc. And having one episode that is more down to earth (as much as a show about vampires can be) is more refreshing than trying to advance a plot that pretty much has gone to s..t. Episodes that are different like this one and are kind of like what we had in season 1 & 2 are what made me like the show in the first place

Realistic and really engaging
albjd14 February 2020
One of my most favourite episodes ever. The show is an overall ~8.5 stars for me, but this episode is by far the best I have seen in a looong time.

All the characters are real, like, you can see that stuff happening for real, the way everyone acted in this episode is how you'd expect normal people to act, that way it was really engaging and thrilling.

You can practically feel the emotions and the fear, really liked the way the shot the scenes, with the camera moving behind the actors and turning left and right slowly.

Truly a masterpiece, I seriously solely created an account to make this review.

Loved it

Convinced 1 Stars Are Bots

Bizarre that I come to find specifically this episode after watching it to find it is not only the lowest rated of the season, but of the entire series. Yeah, ok. Little odd. Started reading the "reviews" and started to see the trend. Real discourse provides the one thing they disliked, or liked, rest is hired posts. Strangely, this particular episode has skewed nonsensical distaste for its existence for barely a reason.

This episode. THIS episode, is what made this show great to begin with. Visceral, honesty, and in-the-moment pacing. Literally everything Johnathan Scarfe brings anytime he's on camera, especially during the entirety of season 1, but out of the blue.

The series has been slowly transcending into the CW-level of fantasy trifle that blurs episodic progress together. It barely matters and never leaves a forged memory even minutes after you've finished. It's supernatural junk food. What made this show special, was the raw honesty and realistic pacing Johnathan Scarfe's character forced this series to focus on, protecting sleepy beauty. How? For how long? Who can help? It was all a natural progression in an apocalypse.

Did not matter that the antagonist was vampire, zombies, sharks, or a vegetable. The audience simply watched and kept watching what Johnathan Scarfe's character did next and that was the used while the backdrop kept getting more and more belligerently supernatural. This episode returned to S01E01 with a passion. Fantastic acting, cinematography, and character driven reaction to consistently changing situations around them.

This episode couldn't have costed much and was the most expansive and effective in terms of character development not seen since we heard Johnathan's monologue reflecting on life while on a blood IV to support Doc during a zombie apocalypse. The writing and story boarding IS masterclass, yet, poetic for the way it allows the viewer to appreciate the little things in the most surreal situations. Ask me how I know. Excelsior.

Overall, a good episode, but...
ghstcat5 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Overall, this was a good episode. Great acting with the right amount of girlie panic, with the one most herioc girl being neutralized up front, so no outlandish heroics. On the flip side, I think they missed a prime opportunity. They explained why Jack was so into archery, but she was part of a whole TEAM of competitive archers, and not one of them within the episode got to showcase their skills when all hell broke loose.

This part got added because I needed more wording. - And if they were in Seattle, near to the volcano, I think the ash cloud would have been a greater and more immediate problem to deal with. (They were running around without even attempting to cover up.)

What a waste
ghostx5123 November 2019
Flash back on a character nobody cares about, with probably the worst script ever! Maybe not ever but very badly written. Characters were unbelievable. The whole episode made no sense.

Best of the season to date
Kappmaster21 December 2019
This was far and away the best episode of the season to date. Returning to the day of the Rising rekindles the original plot of the series in a very welcome way. The actresses do a wonderful job fighting for survival in the unknowns of the original fall of civilization. The Cloverfield-style camerawork helps establish the chaotic nature of the plot. This episode was extremely well done and easily my favorite in quite some time.

I dislike flashback episodes
wmmurphy00023 November 2019
Especially when it's for a character I don't have any reason to connect to. I can see they are attempting to hand the series off to Jack, but the way the story has gone prior to this, you've given me no reason to care about this character. Watching her "tragic" backstory made me cringe more than connect with her. I do like this show, but if this is the future of the franchise, euthanasia would be my recommendation.

Covid reviews are funny
mattwilliams-7983721 July 2021
I have noticed that many reviews given during covid are incredibly negative. This is a great episode. Stand alone and worth watching. Very little to do with the series but great on it's own. Enough of the negative vibes folks. Take a chill pill.

Shockingly Bad
iGlad23 November 2019
Why did they even bother as it was such a pathetic episode which didn't move the story along whatsoever. We have at least 3 main storylines and instead they gave us this turkey.

Back to when it all started
cherise-3565815 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't write alot of reviews on IMDB. But this episode is so worth it.

Engaging, thrilling, realism it's all here.

I can see why people perhaps disliked the episode it feels like a completely different world with friendly faces. But isn't that the problem? Where are the realistic reactions from characters, where is the apocalyptic world this season ?! I mean 2 episodes back the twins met up. It was a quick meet up. No emotion no nothing. I mean it's your sister you thought she was dead all this time. And there was almost no emotion. Dude where's the crying your eyeballs out or at least hugging her long enough not caring about Vanessa for a second. Speaking about Vanessa , she is their mom and all was a lie blabla. Big battle happens and inbetween the fight they already call her mother proudly like seriously ?! You just met this woman... And I have many many more..

I love this episode because it brings back s1/s2 vibes back to when all vampires where a threat. Where emotions were realistic and the world felt real. Probs to the actresses they really delivered.

Some great one-shots.
bkanuck2 July 2021
An interesting perspective of The Rising. I loved the long one-shots! Well acted overall, and the sound design and special effects were impressive given how few cuts there are and that the camera man was right there with them. One of the more unique episodes.

josephfs24 November 2019
This episode is an absolute throw-away, adding nothing to the story. Did everybody good go on vacation? As I type this all the other reviews are one star ratings. If you skip this one you lose nothing. Thank God for fast forward.

Episode of the season
jodeciuk18 June 2020
Excluding the first few episodes of season one. This is the best episode of the TV show by far.

Season had list it up until this episode took things back to the origins and gave Jack one of the new main characters a back story, which helps you understand what the character has been through.

I was about to give up on the season until I saw this episode.

Please get rid of all the over the top fantasy aspects and get back to getting the basics right again as seen in this episode.

This was a long time coming and well needed refresh.

Good performance from Actress who played Jack, good tension in the episode and all the over the top dress up fantasy removed. More of this gritty side of the story please.

Was this a vacation filler?
doruneda-7622524 November 2019
It's either the team was on strike, or on vacation. Regardless, it's a shame they came up with this episode If they really wanted to have one episode less, they should have simply skipped it, instead of punishing the viewers.

All the hate for this episode, I had to write a review. This episode was well acted, great story, one of the best filler episodes I could remember, and could have easily been a whole movie on it's own. Stop the hate people

Worst episode ever !
duckboy-9417126 November 2019
This show has gone down hill since they started focusing on the 2 young sisters and I have officially gave up on the show. They basically cut their own throats when they introduced these 2 young Van helsing sister's to the story line. Now your show will be canceled for sure ! 😡

Wtf!
kathylill26 November 2019
Worst episode out of the entire show; why are they focusing so much on this girl? If the rest of the season is going to be like this one episode I fear for the show. Is Scott Gimple some how involved? Maybe that's what happened here, it would explain everything.

Favorite Episode
colbylawrence235027 November 2021
I really liked seeing the "how it all started" aspect. The little things like the girls live stream a natural disaster, regular people completely freaking out, no one believing it's real, etc. The tension was palpable and the acting was great!

I loved the rawness of the shooting and editing. The girls actions/reactions seemed legit and you felt for them. I also loved the switch from the usual "studio method" of production.

Not sure how there are 1 star reviews. It crazy how people "review" things nowadays. It's either a 1 or 10? It really does nothing for potential viewers/users.

Why....just why???
ajwidina23 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Totally unnecessary waste of an episode. There is zero point in this flashback, nothing new is brought to light pertaining to the ongoing plot. The fact that it also focuses on a lesser character(unless something extraordinary happens to change that) is highly annoying. The cinematography was atrocious, just hard to watch. Not to mention how annoying it was listening to teenage girls scream relentlessly and breathe heavily for the entire episode compounding in a monumental waste of the audience time and patience. If you love the show, this episode carries no true value toward the plot once again and can easily be skipped over to get back to what we all really want to see.
