Good mid season finale with a decent cliffhanger
ninjaboyballer22 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Is Anybody Out There?" is once again a solid episode for Fear the Walking Dead. Th CGI for the Plane in the air was surprisingly decent. Everyone had their moments, like with John purposing to June which I though was sweet. Sarah facing off against Logan was great, in which we also learn a reason for Logan's motivations. The stuff with the walkers on the plane and the runway lights going out were all intense and nerve racking. And the reunions at the end were all really good(especially Alicia and Daniel) and for a moment it reminded me of "The Walking Dead" family reunions. But it ends with a cliffhanger which leaves us wondering: After all that he's done can we really trust Logan?

Overall this mid-season finale is a good one and has a lot of good tense moments and a good cliffhanger. I'm going to try to review the rest of the season but I don't know if I'll be able to, because school starts back up for me in August. But I'll try.

Final rating: 8.2/10

Nothing mind blowing but an action packed mid-season finale with many great character moments
Holt34422 July 2019
This was an action packed mid-season finale with some superb character moments and development, the characters are really well written and likeable. The writing team have done a great job in this season with its overall story but mostly the world building as it's top notch. I have gained likeness towards the writers after their mistakes and bad writing from the last season. The overall feel and atmosphere this season has is what it should be. I still find that book really stupid though. The episode was filled with suspense and action sequences. The acting was phenomenal, whilst Alycia and Lennie shined the most.

I don't normally get emotional in reunions but the reunion between Alicia and Daniel made me emotional as it was so god damn natural and I felt their emotions. Now to the ending, it was good but far from mind-blowing. It truly set up some interesting events that will wait until the second half, I'm hyped!

Thrilling mid season finale but left a little shallow with story.
cruise0122 July 2019
Episode 5.08 (3.5 out of 5 stars).

The episode continues with a race against time. Several characters rush to get the plane fixed, some rush to get back from the plane, and two others looking for another run to get back. Before the power plant meltdown. They have to avoid close contact with the undead cause of the radiation.

The episode is thrilling and exciting. The characters are left a little flat still. John and Junes love for each other grows which feels a little flat. Alicia finally accepting who she wants to be finally revealing itself. The episode is a reunion with characters distant with each other. Meanwhile, the guy that took the warehouse from the characters in the beginning of the season true agenda is revealed. Which is setting up the conflict for the last half of this season. Which feels like a forgettable and uninteresting story.

Great episode!
ohmap-977-66481022 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The show was action packed from the beginning to the end! John proposing to June was GREAT! The flight had me on the edge of my seat, and the zombies almost ended it for everybody when Wendell was attacked and a zombie turned off the approach lights by tripping over the wires (Al was going in blind). Wendall had to crawl to save the people on the plane by plugging in the lights again.

I liked the interaction between Dwight and John. Dwight could see the love John had for June by telling her on the walkie to save herself and get on the plane without him if he didn't get there in time.

This is some of the best television I have seen in a while. The acting was superb, and the interaction of the characters was excellent.

I don't rate this show too often, but the entire half season I would give an overall 8. The show will return in 3 weeks. The theme will revolve around how to get new gas; the gas is going bad.

I have to say this to those giving it a "1". If you hate it so much, can't you turn the station? However, they won't find anything better! They would have to go to Netflix to find anything halfway decent that I have seen.

Very good and emotional episode!
nomis9421 July 2019
I liked this episode a lot. It has some very good character moments and also plenty of thrilling stuff. Sarah and Wendell are really cool and fun to watch, they did good this episode. The scenes between June and John are beautiful. Grace is a great new addition, I hope she'll be a part of the group for a very long time! This mid-season finale is a good wrap-up for this half's rocky arc. Season 5 is somewhat decent so far, but the sloppy writing and the slow plot-development is hard to deny.

Warning: Spoilers
5x8 Rating: 8.4/10

Storyline: In a flashback, Morgan's group is at the dam taking turns on the radio trying to reach out to strangers who might need help. After days of no response, Morgan finally makes contact with a man named Logan, who he promises to help. In the present, Doris and Logan's crew confront Logan, having torn apart the factory in search of something that he promised them but they can't find. The group demands to know what they are looking for, threatening to kill him otherwise.

On the road, Alicia takes a hot shower off of Grace's truck and furiously tries to rinse off the contaminated blood. As the nuclear plant sirens continue to ring, Grace tells Alicia they have to leave soon. A herd of walkers approaches and Morgan radios Luciana to tell her they'll try to lead them away as they prepare the plane and runway. Elsewhere, John hot-wires a car and drives him and Dwight away.

Back on the truck, Alicia tells Morgan she's sorry she couldn't kill any more of them, but he tells her she shouldn't be sorry and promises to teach her aikido. Grace then stops the truck as the walkers pass by and head towards the siren. Suddenly, the siren stops, and the nuclear plant explodes. The walkers then turn to their truck as Grace tries to drive away. She hits a car on the barricade and gets stuck, forcing them to run away.

Meanwhile, Sarah comes across Logan leaving the dam and asks him if he can help her light the runway for her friends. He reminds her he has stayed alive by not sticking his neck out, so he declines and drives off. Elsewhere, John and Dwight's car stalls out which Dwight suggests is due to the gas going bad. June radios John and vows to come to get him but he tells her not to and makes her promise to get on the plane whether he makes it back or not. He confesses his love for her and tells her she's his reason to live and he wants her to have a reason to live, too. John spots a message written on a tree - 'if you're reading this, it means you're still here', below the message, a ladder extending upwards from the flames. John then asks him how far he thinks Sherry's car is.

At the plane's airfield, Morgan, Alicia, and Grace run with the walkers close behind. Morgan radios Luciana to tell everyone to get ready to fly but she says John and Dwight aren't here yet, so Morgan asks them to help him fight the walkers. On the other airstrip, Sarah and Wendell discuss how they will light the runway for the plane's arrival when Daniel arrives to help them with some tools from his warehouse.

Back at the airfield, the group walks backwards to the plane as the walkers close in. Strand tells Alicia that Madison would be proud of her as June tells Morgan she made John a promise and they have to get on the plane. The group makes a run for the plane as John and Dwight drive their way past the walkers in Sherry's van. Everyone makes it on the plane safely as a wall of smoke from the reactor fills the runway. Strand and Al steer through it and make it into the open air. June tells John she didn't want to leave and he comforts her.

In the air, Grace breaks Morgan's staff in half and throws the contaminated half out of the plane. Morgan thanks her but doesn't look pleased. John tells June he worried he would never talk to her again and doesn't want to waste another moment. He fashions a candy wrapper into a ring, gets down on one knee, and proposes. She gleefully says yes and the two kiss.

That night, Sarah, Wendell, and Daniel finish the lights on the tarmac as the plane gets closer. Strand sees the lights and tells the other to look. Suddenly, Wendell spots a walker and kills it with his wheelchair spikes. Then another walker approaches and trips the runway lights. On cue, the plane runs out of fuel and Wendell's forced to jump out of his chair to fix it. The plane roars toward the dark runway as Wendell fixes the lights at the last second, allowing the plane to finally land.

Morgan embraces Sarah and introduces her to Grace. He then meets Daniel as everyone else gets introduced. Alicia spots Daniel and runs up to hug him. He apologizes to her for what happened and she promises to make things better. She introduces him to Dwight, who Daniel says needs a haircut. Charlie hugs him as Strand approaches. Daniel tells Strand he was wrong. "We all are sometimes," Strand says.

Suddenly, a woman contacts Morgan on the radio, asking if that was his plane flying overhead. She's seen his boxes and wants his help. The communication cuts out as Logan interrupts the signal and says they need to chat. He pulls up in an old truck as everyone focuses their guns on him. Logan explains that the world is in a state of decay that is making it hard for people to get to the places they need to. As part of that, gasoline is going bad which Clayton had anticipated and created a place to solve that problem. The location is in Clayton's journal which Logan had expected to find at the factory. Logan warns that if his crew knew he went to them, they would kill them all. Logan suggests that if they give him the journal, he can help the group find the place and with a glance at Sarah, admits that he has some things he needs to make up for as well. Logan insists that they need to work together to find the place before his former crew does.

S5.E8 - Pretty Good Episode [8/10]
panagiotis19936 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S5. E8) My Reaction / Review for Fear The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 8 ''Is Anybody Out There?'': Episode 7 was good and I gave it a rating of 7.6/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. So the team still tries to help strangers which is a bit dumb to me. It's not like they have unlimited supplies to share with everyone. Grace is such a boring character. Seems like this Logan guy is not to be trusted. They weren't able to stop the meltdown, that's really bad news. Daniel is here too? Nice. So we are supposed to believe that Al fixed the plane? Come on... I cant believe that this plane can actually fly. John and June are so cute. Will this be a new chapter for the team? Let's see. Overall this was a pretty good episode, my rating is 8/10.

was that a realistic plot point you just introduced?
Rob-O-Cop21 July 2019
Finally, something that makes sense. Fuel going bad (as we know cos science people pointed out the ridiculousness of this whole running round find cars with full tanks flies against the reality that fuel has a shelf life. So good on whoever braved up to writing that into the universe.

Was this episode entertaining? In parts yes, but with too many convenient staged dramas, - the team attaching the netting to the plane only to catch some zombie hangers so they could dramatically drag then drop them, John Dorie and Dwight, fumbling their way around so they could turn up at the last minute for some manufactured thrills and tension, Wendell taking precious seconds to deliver a burn about terrible tasting beer or something (really????). Maybe that was all bad direction and editing, and looked much better on paper. It just seemed annoying and stupid on screen.

So there's a possibility that there's a story coming out of all this, I don't think they quite sold the 'cut off from everywhere on land' thing, I can't see how that's even possible with the wide open spaces they're talking about, but ok, fuel plant, bring it on, let's see you not screw this up.

The episode successfully wraps up the first half of the season with a narrative that balances intense action with deep emotional undercurrents
fernandoschiavi23 April 2024
The power plant melts down and the containment building explodes releasing a cloud of radioactive dust into the air that threatens the group. Each member struggles to return to the plane before the cloud reach them. Alicia is decontaminated by Grace, but is left unsure of how much radiation she absorbed or its future effects on her health. They make it make to the plane along with John and Dwight as the plane takes off. With the help of Daniel, Sarah and Wendell are able to create a runway using Christmas lights for the plane to land. Their happy reunion is short when Morgan gets a call for help and Logan arrives seeking their help. Apparently remorseful over his past actions, Logan warns that they must find the place where Polar Bear was making oil before his former crew does as it is their only chance of reaching the people who need their help.

The episode opens with a sense of imminent peril as the group grapples with the need to evacuate before the impending meltdown of a nuclear reactor. The clock is ticking, and the tension is palpable as Morgan and Alicia coordinate their efforts to bring everyone, including the children they've vowed to protect, to a designated rendezvous point. Alicia's confrontation with her own mortality, having been exposed to radioactive walker blood, adds a poignant layer to her character's journey. Her resolve, juxtaposed with Morgan's unwavering optimism, drives much of the episode's emotional narrative.

One of the standout scenes involves the daring rescue attempt by John and June, who use an airplane that they and Althea have been repairing. The sequence of the plane's turbulent flight back across the mountains is charged with high stakes and underscores the themes of risk and sacrifice. This moment not only serves as a thrilling climax but also symbolically represents the group's desperate leap of faith into an uncertain future.

The themes of communication and connection run deeply through "Is Anybody Out There?" The episode title itself is a poignant reminder of the survivors' isolation and their quest for others who may still be out there. The final moments, where the group hears a mysterious voice over the radio, open new narrative possibilities and a sense of renewed hope. These elements underscore the series' exploration of the human need for community and belonging, even in the direst circumstances.

In conclusion, "Is Anybody Out There?" successfully wraps up the first half of the season with a narrative that balances intense action with deep emotional undercurrents. The episode's ability to weave together themes of survival, hope, and connection, all while delivering heart-pounding action and tender character moments, is a testament to the show's enduring appeal. As the characters face new challenges and mysteries, the series reaffirms its commitment to telling compelling stories of resilience and human spirit in the face of apocalypse.

Really?
jennifercbutler-1508624 July 2019
Fear the Walking Dead began as a somewhat horror show around a strong female lead, and now, it's turned into the "must save all" predictable "Morgan" soap opera?! What is this?

Fear The Walking Soap Opera. Morgy and the Helper Team. It works as a comedy.
Bababooe22 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As predicted, Grace has just enough water to cleanse Alyc. She also cleans Morgy's stick. So the suspense of Alyc is done. Or is it. Oooh.

Alyc, Morg, and Grace make it to the plane with a contingent of zombies behind them for dramatic effect.

John and Dwight also make it, just in the nick of time. But not before some soap time with June. John proposes and makes her promise to go on without him. The plane takes off, zombies hanging on, nuclear meltdown and nuclear cloud. Morgy almost gets his fingers chopped off by zombies.

Truckes aks Logan, the mill thief, to help light the runway for the plane. Nice speech. But unfortunately for Truckes, nobody speaks like that. Logan says, nice speech, but no. They leave the mill because they were there for a journal that described how to refine fuel. Mad Max.

What are our heroes to do? Yes, let's bring in Dan. Dan shows up with Christmas lights. We have a tense moment with Wheelchair and a zombie. Plane lands, everybody's safe and happy. Alyc sees Dan. Dan meets Scarface Dwight and the Radiation Kids.

Finally, a walky battery dies. It was Cowboy John's. And Finally, gas is going bad. What was it 10 years? Not as ridiculous as the Beer Balloon. But still nonsense.

I'm here as a social experiment to see what they can get away with and read the praise from the paid 10 star reviewers. Along the way I find comedy in ridiculing the implausibility of the situations, and the convoluted contrived stories.

Fear the Just for laughs
mihmichael7 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Well, they are stellar, episode after episode, I guess they are getting funnier than Frasier & Seinfeld. People without mechanical knowledge (Althea knows how to awitch a camera tape), with help from some kids, manage to "fix" an airplane and make it fly? Just in time before disaster. A ring made from candy wrapping, in 5 seconds? How you do that? And Dan the Man showing up just when they needed him, with all the lights they needed! Out of fuel just when they saw the runway? A perfect jump out of wheelchair to save the day (show)? Nothing reeks pathetic more than FTWD.

Awful
stephen-6159422 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The whole helping people that don't want help and when they can't even help themselves. Those kids seem to be doing fine until Alicia came along and messed it all up and basically forcing them to go with her.

The whole plane was a waste of time, it seemed truck lady, daniel and truck lady's partner all had no problem getting to the other side without a plane.

The whole Grace taking morgan's stick was contaminated makes no sense. So his stick was contaminated, but guess it was fine enough for her to give it back and let him use it again. But this time all you need to do is break off the dirty part and it is fine.

John purposing to june was nice, Dwight and john scenes are good.

I mean the only reason to watch is for any clues on the rick grimes stuff, other then that this is a train wreck. It's like the writers got jealous that the game of thrones writers did worse so they are trying to catch up.

'Formula' writing is killing this series
mjsreg29 July 2019
I really like 'Fear The Walking Dead' and started watching it after the 'Walking Dead' became incredibly boring with the same old characters entering into endless soul searching motivational very long speeches.

This seems to be going in the same direction. Every major character entered in to some soul-searching personal conflict - and had to make a speech about it in this episode.

If the writers are going to carry on using this same formula to fill air time on the cheap it will be the death of this series.

There are a lot of very good characters and actors portraying them. But they can only do so much with a crappy script.

martinsplads23 July 2019
This episode was trash. It was so good damn pointless. The episode had stakes but its like they wasn't even there anyways, no one died, no one lost anything just happy family ending that just didn't make any sense cause this is a spin-off of the walking dead and the in the original show the stakes was always high but in Fear its just non existent.
