Maybe if they had paid attention to the storyline they would realise it's not a social worker but a property developer who owns half of Glasgow. Interesting plot with the added bonus of no false Glasgow accents.

I enjoyed it

Warning: Spoilers
As others have said, there are a few story lines that don't really go any where. However, some good acting especially Kaya and Doherty and enjoyable drama at points. I was initially troubled slightly as how to morally judge the ending twist - the girl power bit. Kaya is presented as the down trodden troubled victim but actually she made her choices. Therefore, in conclusion I believe the final action by Kaya was the right one - as it was essentially the plan from the beginning.
Surprisingly feel good

New Places, New Characters

Had it been a Hollywood film, Kaya would be a psychotic murderer and the plot would have been violent. Instead, there was the power of love and the hope of redemption. The soundtrack should not be ignored. It was lovely and haunting.
Enthralling Viewing
daviddunn-906534 April 2020
Top notch drama, . Nice to see such a quality production filmed in and around Glasgow with the creme de la creme of Scottish acting talent in David Hayman and Martin Compston. Many critics say Compston does a good Glasgow accent, after only being familiar with his performances in Line Of Duty. Well he would have "a good Glasgow accent " as he was brought up in Greenock, not far from Glasgow,
The young girl playing the troubled teen is an excellent actress and must surely have a successful acting career ahead of her. I am sure we will see a lot more of her in years to come.
Thisis an enthralling drama that really does get you thinking about each character and are they what they seem.
I NEED PREQUELS!
montsegimenez21 June 2020
Entertaining, but the fact that most of the characters have such special circumstances makes it less believable and makes me lose focus on the main story and creates the need for several prequels that would surely be more interesting to me:
Even more could be added, since the secondary characters are also endowed with history: Dan's sister and nephew, Kaya's mother (excellent character for excellent actress, perhaps the best of the series) and Kaya's social worker ...
In summary, the surrogacy theme and the power play that this can bring is well developed, but the only thing in the series that I consider pure gold is when it shows us how you could let yourself go through life if you let others decide for you.
- EMILY, prequel title: The princess. A typical person with a vocation for the center of the world. Once something happened to her and, consequently, life owes her the fact that everything is as she wishes. I hated the character for being a 'posturing person' and the actress left me cold.
- DAN, prequel title: The criminal. I can understand what he did in his past, but boy, ending up in the brick sector, I am not going to comment much more ... The evolution and logic of the character seems quite credible and I liked the actor.
- KAYA, prequel title: Opportunity and improvement: poor kid, bad life from the beginning, with a mother more than despicable. A survivor. Logical evolution of a strong character. Convincing work of the actress.

Great characters depth
massimo-berta30 March 2020
The characters have a great depth and they slowly get revelead to the viewer with good plot twists! After episode 2 is hard to know yet if the main male character is a good character or a villain... good suspence and "misteri" which will make you curious to watch the new episode!
Very watchable drama yet occasionally infuriating
liam_crowe16 April 2020
Firstly, the acting is phenomenal. It's not often I see a programme where every character is acted superbly, we feel every ounce of their emotions and despite the short 5 part series, we actually develop feelings for each character.
The series is exciting, gripping and full of twists, yet sometimes I found the show infuriating. There are times you see Kaya treated rather oddly by Dan and Emily - I understand it could be possible for Emily to be so pedantic and over the top, however I did find it weird for Dan to be so aggressive towards Kaya. There were times I felt a simple conversation would have sorted the predicament so I did occasionally feel the script was unrealistic.
Overall however I thoroughly enjoyed the show - the first four episodes were superb yet I did find the last episode a bit slow and tedious, however the first four episodes more than made up for that.
If you're debating what to watch, then I'd really recommend this programme. You'll enjoy it.

Intriguing and enthralling

A very interesting and clever plot, great acting and good solid story that until the last half hour of the last episode you didn't quite know how it would play out. Lovely scenery and nice city shots and great to see a proper satisfying ending.
Just a word on "wee lassie"

Amazing - well worth a watch
thefurryfriend17 April 2020
The best thing I have watched for a long time. Loved that it had a completely different type of storyline than what we're all used to seeing - but still kept you on tenterhooks. Cant understand the negative reviews. So gripping from the start, with lots of twists, the main one taking the show in a completely different direction than I had imagined! I was pleasantly surprised with the last episodes, leaving you wanting to know more about Kayas background. The acting was phenomenonal, you warmed to each character from the start and really felt Kayas pain and torment. Well worth a watch. I would love to see a series two with the same characters.
Did you hear about the wee lassie?
somethingreal8127 May 2020
Admittedly I'm not Scottish, but the words "wee" and "lassie" are overused throughout this show to the point of parody. The characters are also not very likable, which makes it hard to root for anyone or understand why others in the story are so invested in what happens to them. The plot was entertaining enough, though, that the 5 episodes went by fairly quickly.
disappointing
bleeb554 August 2020
Started out strong but after the first 2 episode it started to decline all around. It was like they had to finish or didn't know how to develop the story line past the first couple of episodes. Very disappointing! Frankly I would NOT recommend wasting one's time
Keeping Us Guessing
westsideschl28 March 2021
Hard to find anybody likable. Everyone is pursuing their own interests without much regard for others. Feel good, pollyanish ending. Not sure where season 2 goes from here. Not much background to characters which made it difficult to understand them & their actions, but contributed to the suspense. Also left too many holes in subplots unexplained. Overall story was unique & well written fulfilling its goal of keeping viewers wondering at the outcomes.
I am Hooked now !!!

Warning: Spoilers
Very clever. Big reveal in second episode.
The cast are excellent and nice to hear the proper accents for a change. Must have been a nice change for the true Scottish actors !. Now we are left wondering, what is going to happen next??. Mirren Mack is superb, I look forward to seeing more of her . Definitely a star in the making.!. Martin Compston, as always , is so good. I I Iove him in Line of Duty but he definitely has an edge in this , leaves you wondering what he is prepared to do. Sophie Rundle everything you do seems to turn to gold. Peaky Blinders anyone?!.
Cannot wait for the next episode.
Thank you , just what is needed at the moment. Well done everyone, a winner.
Gives us something to think about and lose ourselves in.
Sits painfully on a fence of its own construction
paul2001sw-114 April 2020
'The Nest' tells the story of a surrogate pregnancy, but it's far from a straighforward tale. Everyone brings their own backstory and hidden motivations; there's a thriller-like element in that we don't know who we can trust. But ultimately the drama is weakened by its own construction, making the earnest but obvious point that sometimes the legitimate interests of highly-flawed but essentially decent human beings are in conflict, while lacking in dramatic impulse. In the near-final scene, a judge delivers a verdict that feels painfully transparent as a fence-sitting moral to the story. When a series holds back from taking the side of (or showing us the inner mind of) any of the characters, so, unfortunately, does the viewer.
Great lockdown drama.
Sleepin_Dragon31 May 2020
It's a terrific series, it's dark, intriguing, and has the ability to take you on an unexpected journey, I had expected a Cuckoo in the Nest story, the reality is so much deeper.
It gets better and better as it develops, personally I thought the first episode was the weakest, and a bit of a stretch, by part two I was engrossed.
The acting is the best aspect, the performances are excellent, Mirren Mack is so impressive, all are wonderful, but as is so often the case it's the diminutive Shirley Henderson who steals the show, she is tremendous.
It will have done wonders for Scottish tourism, it looks magical and rugged. That house is exquisite.
Worthy of a blu ray purchase, this was excellent, 9/10.

Just about worth watching
Vindelander15 April 2020
Started well enough as the characters and plot develop but the ending is rather an anticlimax. Cast perform well enough but more could have been made of the shady underworld connections of Martin Compston's role.
All in all I wouldn't watch it again.

Brilliant series
wisewebwoman4 August 2020
A complex issue of surrogacy and infertility explored in great depth. The script, actors and scenery had me gripped from the very beginning. Faultless production values. Had me on the edge of my seat along with the well done subplots.

Decent drama just one episode to many
bazookamouth-221-8980973 May 2022
I saw this on Netflix. I thought this was pretty good. I think it could have been shorter as some parts of the series dragged. I thought Mirren Mack who played Kaya was outstanding. Martin Compston is usually good in everything but I wasn't overly keen on Sophie Rundle who played Emily. A bit of a weak link in the series. As for the story it got less interesting as it progressed and as I say maybe could have been four episodes. Mirren Mack has a big future. She has a unique look. Plays damaged very well. All in all a very good series. Worth watching.
I really enjoyed it.

I had recorded the series.
So when all the rubbish games shows and house diy and move to the sun/ country are on.
I choose to watch something which obviously cost more the the above.
And I found it worth it, the acting was excellent.
The writing flawless.
I did imagine an alternative ending, where they adopted the girl and the baby.

Hard to understand
bazcaz13 April 2020
Was really looking forward to this ,could not give it a higher rating than 6..although with all the twist and turns was certainly intriguing. My complaint and that which ruined for me was the the broad Scottish accent very hard to understand much of the dialogue..with subtitles in English would have given it a 9
The Nest
Prismark1025 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A wealthy Glasgow couple pay a teenager £50,000 to be a surrogate.
A simple story that hints at darkness. Can the girl be trusted? Does she have hidden issues in her life?
The first episode climaxed with a dead body but it was hard going.
The final episode with all its twists, reveals and a court battle had a surprisingly happy ending.
It did not convince me that this needed to be a five part drama. I never found it gripping and was left underwhelmed.
However The Nest did show that everyone had baggage, by the end even the wealthy husband is probed by the press.

Really good
gallagherkellie12 July 2021
The main actor in this is great at choosing decent shows to be in (such as Line of Duty). Yes there were a few predictable moments but all in all it was a good thriller with some interesting twists. Acting was well done.
Wow
