Anyone ever watch Red vs Blue?
In the last episode and this one we had to deal with the whiny rebel girl Kwan Ha, a useless and pointless character whom in the first episode said she wanted to get off her planet because there was nothing there, now she's trying to get back to it to rebuild her father's rebellion. Completely forgetting about the fact that there is a group of hostile aliens wanting to wipe out mankind. We have to deal with her excessive brat like behavior and mentality. Though she has had first-hand experience that there is an existence of an alien race out there that wants nothing more than to annihilate mankind she still cares more about the political goings-on of her planet. Her story is completely pointless and useless to the series. Completely forget about the fact that she's not canon but just from a story standpoint it is unnecessary and a waste of time. I feel like anytime we cut to her, she is just time filler. Like they ran out of ideas to fill the time in the episode.
The second story now deals with some unknown woman Who was "rescued" by the covenant as a child. For some weird reason the organization of religiously fanatical aliens who despise humanity call this one human girl "holy one?!" ...WHAT?! Well seeing the Prophet Mercy and Regret in live action is pretty cool it kind of ends there. Although this is the SECOND time we get to see the Hunters in Live-Action, Halo: Nightfall. While we don't get to see the hunters in their armor, shields, and cannons we do see them as we did in halo nightfall. But still No character in this show, not a single group acts as they do from the original source material. Except one... one saving grace from this twisted version of Halo. One blue shimmering light of hope for this series. Cortana.
While the main story follows John and the UNSC trying to unlock the secrets of the forerunners by examining "artifacts" and figuring out how to use it against the Covenant. We are introduced to the only other character as important as the Master Chief himself, the AI Cortana!
While Cortana's origins do somewhat match the source material, Halsey did use a perfect clone copy of Her Own brain to create Cortana. Her being installed permanently in the Chief is different. Cortana is meant to be able to go in and out of hardware with ease, she should be able to enter the master chief suit but not his actual body. Giving her the ability to redirect energy shields or focus shield strength on specific area of the armor as well as giving them tactical read outs and logistics during combat. Well she may not be able to go in and out of hardware like she used to it is nice to see that she still has the same "plucky" personality. And just liking the Halo game Cortana does look like Dr. Halsey.
Jen Taylor reprises her role as the sometimes sassy Artificial Intelligence Cortana. Having played the character for over a decade I am glad to see that they decided not to go with someone else as her voice. It's so nice to hear that familiar attitude and demeanor again. She is, as far, the ONLY character to act and stay true to the game. Even though the situation in the show is different from the game she still acts exactly as Cortana would. While her costume may not look exactly like the first Halo game, it can easily played off as her default look till she ages and upgrades to look more like the Cortana we know and love.
And the enjoyment of the show stops there. While it was great to see someone acting as they should be we are stuck watching master chief completely out of character again! A completely absurd and uncharacteristic Master Chief trying to recover what seem like bad childhood memories.
