Excellent Show +++

Great mini series to watch and takes me back to my childhood and makes me appreciate my mother more. The younger kids should watch this and see how lucky they are today.

Love the show but....

Love this show, such a great idea! BUT It was painful to watch the mom be such a incompetent cook. Would love to see a family where it is not so painful to watch. Doesn't have to be a chef but at least be able to cook some rice in a pot. I mean come on...

Can't Any One Cook Anymore?
reggie-at-random16 March 2020
This series is such a guerrilla indictment of how so many women today have a career but no 'house' skills and certainly are not cooks in any way shape or form. They are assemblers of food but have no clue about how to use a pop-up toaster or cook even the basics. Ironically the children are never made to help clean up, wash or dry dishes. In that era, child labour like this was automatic...our family certainly followed this pattern. 'You used it, you help clean it' was our pater's command with mater's appreciation It's already clear that men were virtually useless in the home and that drone role with many of these modern men, I hope sinks in with enlightenment. At least my father worked a very demanding labourer's job and earned the rest he needed to re-charge for the next day. Overall, I hope the experience helped this chosen family spoiled with ready-made foods, tinned sauces and gravies and eating out far too often realise their otherworldly exchange with insight.

Alright, time to start in Canada 1880 and work our way forward in a second season! Love these shows that combine food, history and culture. Give me more!

Great premise but.....

The show is enjoyable. I have not seen the British counterpart to compare. I would like to do that. I was quite shocked at moms attitude towards some of the foods she was cooking and having to do things by hand. My mom was a single mother and so am I. We both know how to cook from scratch for our children. I am familiar with foods like kidneys, heart, tripe, etc. I knew how to make stock before I was 9. So I am kind of wondering if she had to put on an act just for ratings. I can't see a woman who has raised 3 teens being so out of it in a kitchen. I don't think it matters which decade she was in. So I guess I gave a lower score because I believe too much of the show was a scripted act.

Not About Dinner
gmoikawa-3545726 July 2018
This show has very little to do with looking at the food eaten during different eras. It seems to be more about showing that the self-admittedly spoiled family spends a lot of time pining when they are deprived of appliances, smart phones, and meals that require no culinary skill. I find that more depressing than entertaining.

What a whining mom!
cdeanroane6 March 2022
I see one poster said they had not see the UK version of this show. I have seen the UK version and none of the ones I watched did the mom of the family whine and complain as much as this mom in Canada. She seems unable to cook even the most basic meals. She was always whining that she missed her dish washer, and shoes of some periods hurt he feet. Also she whined that women of the earlier decades seem so repressed and over burden with having to be a mom that did not have electronics to keep the kids entertained. One has to wonder why she got married unless it was to have a husband cook for her.
