Heartwarming

I know it's not like in the books, but oh my God, I was so happy when they reunited in Woolam's Creek, and when he came to Claire! And what Herr Müller did broke my heart.

If Only I Could Rate This Episode an 11
Anonnamus9 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After a somewhat sluggish start to season 4, the producers hit a home run with this episode. Granted, it could be the return of my favorite character that had me so enamored, but either way, I could not stop watching.

Pros:

  • Jamie and Claire befriending the natives reminded me why I love them so much. They will never be part of the scared masses, inciting violence against anyone different from them.

  • Jamie proving once again how he's the perfect man, turning down the overly obvious silversmith's advances.

  • Progress on the Brianna/Roger storyline. I wondered if and when she would finally decide to visit her mother. I truly hope Roger follows her.

  • The return of Murtaugh. He doesn't get enough credit. I can't think of a better character than him, loyal and steadfast to a fault. The Frasers are truly blessed to have him as a friend. I cannot imagine the show without him, and am so glad he's finally back. I just hope it's in a regular capacity, not just periodic appearances.

Cons:

  • Like the rest of the season, there are too many slow parts with zero progression of a storyline. I am aware Jamie and Claire are soulmates, not even time could keep them apart, but perhaps a little less focus on their affection for each other and a little more on their adaptation to a new land would go a long way.

  • Yet another rebellion in the making? It's like the entire world's form of entertainment back then was to stir up drama. A noble cause for just reasons, but come on, can't they go three weeks without any action that could get them arrested for treason?

I honestly don't know what I would do if Lord John Grey and Murtaugh were to share a scene together. Would my two favorite characters get along with each other? Share a mutual respect? Tolerate each other because they understand that both have only Jamie's best interests at heart? This was a fabulous episode, and perhaps the saddest part is that there really wasn't a true villain. Herr Mueller was not a bad man, he was a devastated man who made a terrible decision out of grief. His backwards views of the natives were fitting with the norm back in those days. I could not survive ten minutes if I were to crawl through those rocks.

I just hope that the rest of the season proves to be as good as this episode.

Reunite!
hqueilla3 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I loved that Jamie's godfather pops up unexpectedly... I was wondering what happened to him. My heart was so broken to see the ignorance and false beliefs got people killed for no good reason. Adawehi Telling Claire that her daughter is here... and she didn't understand. I got goosebumps... this season is getting better and better by each episode. I can't wait to see everyone together again! I never read the books so each chapter is so very exciting.

I'm very curious about Roger

Fabulous, Outstanding, Loved It.

Fantastic Episode...Murtagh's reunion with both Jamie and Claire was awesome. Watched the reunion scenes 5 times. Jamie walking into the blacksmith shop complaining; Murtagh recognizing his voice but not turning around until Jamie insisted. The emotion, joy, tears, embracing touched my heart. Loved Murtagh's reaction to Ian Jr calling him an old coot AND Murtagh's when Jamie revealed Claire had come back to him. Jamie showing Murtagh his Mother's candlestick holders. Claire heard someone whistling "boogie woogie bugle boy" and was ecstatic to see Murtagh walking up the path at Fraser's Ridge

A Heartwarming and Tragic Look at What Season 4 Should Have Been
jmansmannstjohnslrev27 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Whenever I look at back at Season 4 it's sad because episodes like Savages show that despite the unevenness of Season 4, it could have been so much better on the whole, that the showrunners had the ability to tell compelling stories but failed to do so consistently, especially at the back half of the season. On the one hand, the Muller's story is just heartbreaking. Muller genuinely cares about his family, cares about his land, seemingly wanting the same opportunity that Jaime wants to give Claire and Ian and Fergus and Marsali but is twisted in his fear of the "Savages". Muller's biggest crime is ignorance; his family is taken by disease in a way that he lacks the intelligence to comprehend, and blaming the natives gives Muller a way to do something about his family's suffering, a way to make sense over something he couldn't otherwise make sense of. One of the most memorable lines to me is when Muller says that it is the Indians who are supposed to die of the pox. It's so irrational, so bigoted and certainly wrong of him to believe this, and yet, the terrifying thing is, for someone who has just lost most of his family, you can understand his thinking, understand where that pain is coming from, even though it is evil.

And for those of you paying attention, we've seen this multiple times and I think that's why the events hit so close to home for Claire and shake her in the way that they do. Claire's knowledge often finds her branded as a witch or as a White Lady to those who lack understanding. This is Crainesmuir all over again, an Indian healer being killed for being a "witch" by a man who can't contemplate the unseen world of disease. In the end, it's sad because there is bloodshed over something that is no one's fault.

And, of course, the highlight of the episode is the return of Murtagh. The showrunners decision to give Murtagh a larger role than in the book pays constant dividends every time he is on screen, and it's just so nice to him reconnect with Jaime and Claire in the way that he does.

All in all, the episode is just interesting to watch and leans into all of the emotions that made Drums of Autumn so good as a novel, fear, mistrust, danger, but also kinship and family.

Warning: Spoilers
I love outlander with all of my being, it reignited my love for my country and national identity. Just when I thought it couldn't get better they threw in this curveball and the reuniting of old friends. Every episode has me in tears and it's always a rollercoaster of emotional.

Comparison of the book and show: Mueller
amanda_parsons6 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In the book, there is no conflict over water or blessing of the water. Claire is not involved at all. Lord John Grey arrives with William and LJG gets the measles along with Ian. Claire is taking care of them while Jamie and Willie have gone to report an aboriginal man in their care has died of the measles. While recovering, a pastor arrives at Claire's home and says Mueller lived in Salem with his family when an epidemic broke out of measles. Some natives did stop by the house and he didn't want them on his property so he blames this occurence on the natives cursing his family and that is why they died. The pastor approaches Claire who doesn't understand German so LJG speaks and translates for her. Mueller is on his way and the pastor only leaves when he is reassured LJG will take care of Claire. So there is no backstory and a doll and the other parts.

A bittersweet episode
amanda_parsons5 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It took me a moment to recognize Murtagh and I wasn't sure it was him until Jamie called out his name. It's true he died in the books, so it was interesting they brought him back and made him a regulator. It seems they're setting up for some personal conflict in the future.

Poor Roger trying to find Breanna only to discover she too has gone through the stones.

I haven't gotten to the point in the book where there is a conflict between Mueller and the Cherokee. The only mention I had read is that Claire delivered the baby, went into the rain and woods and found that ghost. Then Rollo finds her. I also haven't gotten to the part where Claire's friend dies, but it makes sense why the friend death/sickness follows you and it's not your fault. That part almost made me cry.

I did like the presentation that Mueller believed it was his land and that God would save his family from the measles and give them to the Indigenous. Claire's point of view is so obvious that it's sometimes hard to remember why these transgressions took place. Overall, great episode

Savages
bobcobb30118 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Will the show actually have Native Americans as the bad guys in 2018 and buck Hollywood trends? We will see.

Regardless, this was an interesting episode for sure. At times it felt like violence and shock for the sake of shock when that is not what this show is about though.

Comparison of the book and show: Fire
amanda_parsons6 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In the book, Jamie sees a village on fire and tells Willie to stay put while he goes to investigate. After giving his son some survival tips, he comes across burnt corpses and village. He follows a single man to the survivors where he discovers the measles broke out and took out most of their population. They burnt the dead. They ask if Jamie has seen their healer and two other women. Jamie says no and they say they are going to leave this place.

There is no fight between Mueller and the Indigenous.

In the book, Mueller does come to see Claire with a cloth and what is inside is the same. LJG is with her at the time.

Aaaaaaaaah
marit-4405720 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Having spoiled the entire series for myself before watching it, because that's what I do, I knew Murtagh would be back, but it still made me so happy. Duncan Lacroix is one of the reasons I started watching Outlander, and he was much needed. Beautiful scene with Tantoo Cardinal and Caitriona Balfe as well. I'm assuming the measles must have come with the doll. Just a sad story with the Mueller family, and the price of ignorance and fear of those who are different to us.

The scenery continues to be beautiful of course, and it was a pleasant surprise to find out that it mainly is still filmed in Scotland. That's quite the impressive cabin for 3 non-professional settlers to have built, haha.
