not a promising new season's premier
boryagin25 August 2018
What a disappointment. Of course, we love seeing all the characters and Cleaver in the parliament. His personal developments in previous episodes were lovely and intriguing. But here, not much really going on at all. Should a solid piece of anti-Trump mockery entertain us?

Honestly, the weakest episode ever. Hardly, any logic. Massive flashy events but barely any plot.

Naturally, I am curious about the second episode. But if this downgraded filming continues, I might give up on one of my favorite shows of all time.

Disappointed

Have previously enjoyed all the seasons of Rake. Watched first two episodes of season 5 and won't be watching anymore. Cleaver Green used to be funny. Now he is just an abusive whinging character that no one would want to spend any time with. There are no strong female roles. His assistant does nothing but cry his ex wife continues to have him as a focus/ influence in her life and Missy has lost her feisty independence. I think because our real political figures are so depressingly lacking in leadership the story line of an incompetent useless politician wasting money resources and having regular tantrums is too close to the reality of Australian Politics to be even slightly amusing.

Best show ever

This by far one of the best shows I have ever watched, the characters, the plots, the punchlines and the story.

Love it.

Worst season yet

Rake used to be a fun show. While it stretched plausibility at times, it brought the audience along for the laugh, and was entertaining. Unfortunately season 5 is quite different. Its cringe-worthy, shallow, and the characters are unlikeable. Don't bother wasting your time with this embarrassment.

Just started watching this show during lockdown and have just seen season 5, which has been fantastic. Great acting and everything is hilarious! Especially in today's world and the current society, everything has been on pointe !!

Sad, what has become of a great series
msusskind-7988019 October 2018
We watched episode 1 of season 5 and could not believe how bad it has become. There was not a single funny scene or line and it was seriously cringe-worthy. We loved the first 4 seasons, but it should have ended there. Will not waste the time to watch another minute. Very disappointing!

Amateurish and embarrassing!

Simply does not have the right feel, it all seems rushed and poorly scripted. Performances are sub standard even though Richard Roxburgh is clearly trying to stay true to his character as Clever Greene but he seems to be the only one. A flurry of Aussie actors with hopeless yank accents only adds to the woes of the lazy script. Episode 2 is actually worse, shame ABC!

So very disappointed

Season 4 ended perfectly and I wondered if season 5 would work. It hasn't. I just watched the first episode of season 5 and it was so awful I may not watch the rest of the season. It might just be better to leave my admiration of Rake in tact, rather than spoil it with season 5. They should have ended it on the high of season 4.

Some shows go on too long. Seems a shame. Great characters, great actors, but what was an excellent satire has become somewhat of a farce.

A terrible disappointment.

This episode failed at maintaining the greatness of the previous seasons, of the sincerity of the characters and failed to establish any audience engagement or care for the plot lines... And oh boy, how many plot lines can one cram into one episode?! Far too many for any audience member to care about any of it. They're the same fantastic actors, but completely under utilised. Richard Roxburgh's charisma was the only reason I didn't press stop before the end. I doubt I'll attempt to watch the next episode. A pity, as I had so looked forward to this season.

This was a great show

Operative is Great! It has become a poorly drawn cartoon of what was once a truly brilliant piece of comedy. I feel sorry for the individuals who signed on for this return believing it would be of the quality of previous seasons.

Terrible
admin-59114 October 2018
I had stocked up on Rake to "binge" this week ... First Episode terrible!

The satirical humour that had made this series so good has been replaced by puerile gutter gags ... Have all the writers been replaced?

Not sure that I'll bother with the remaining episodes.

One Plot, Two Plot, Three Plot too many!

Warning: Spoilers
I was so excited to see season 5 pop up on Netflix today! I couldn't wait to see what Cleaver is like as a Senator, but alas, he was still Cleaver from before with no real growth whatsoever. The beginning of the episode was promising and entertaining, if not unsurprising- Waking up to his neighbor's sons playing basketball, he confronts them with his complaints naked, setting off a scandal that is sure to bite him on his naked bum in the near future. I didn't mind this plot set up Bc it is typical of the show and should be interesting to see how he again maneuvers his way out of a sticky situation. He then is at the House of Parliament meeting an important person and manages to accidentally create an incident that leaves the second party in serious trouble. Though this had the good makings of an interesting plot, for some reason it is rushed through and barely addressed. It seemed pointless and a waste of time. Best part about that was the guest star who played Kath from "Kath and Kim." Suddenly he is at dinner with his ex, a pregnant Missy, and Nicole. This is where it gets confusing. Kath (don't know name yet) is ease dropping on their conversations, in such a way that one would think it is going to play a major role in this episode. But it doesn't. Instead the next time Missy is on screen, she already has the baby and somehow months have passed. The next plot revolves around a possible terrorist attack at the House of Parliament, which creates turmoil for the arrival of an old friend of Cleaver's who is now Secretary of State for the US. Suddenly we find out that the American is in search for Greene so that they can "party like it's 1999." I assume that this many plots shoved into the opening of season 5 is setting up the entire series. Fingers crossed! I gave it 5 stars because the actors are amazing, Cleaver's one liners and glib remarks are still entertaining, and the fact that the show hasn't let me down before. But hopefully there is growth in the characters and we will see cleaver become the good guy that lurks underneath his Peter Pan persona and his ex will finally have a storyline that is worthy of the independent woman that she was in seasons past. Possibly his son will be the Man cleaver would have been had he not become so jaded and lacking a moral compass, and Missy and the baby will have a purpose independent of time fillers.

Warning: Spoilers
Turns out that Scarlet's death last season was actually a suicide. She'd read the advance script for Season 5 Episode 1.

Was a good comedy until now. this season is beyond awful and embracing. I stopped watching after 20 min and never went back to watch the rest. truly unfortunate that their talent completely evaporated by this season.

Why insult US
firemandad0316 November 2018
I loved first 4 seasons. They had just enough comedy, politics, and drama. Then they have to go down like every other show made in Hollywood bashing the US and Trump. Why?
