I was so excited to see season 5 pop up on Netflix today! I couldn't wait to see what Cleaver is like as a Senator, but alas, he was still Cleaver from before with no real growth whatsoever. The beginning of the episode was promising and entertaining, if not unsurprising- Waking up to his neighbor's sons playing basketball, he confronts them with his complaints naked, setting off a scandal that is sure to bite him on his naked bum in the near future. I didn't mind this plot set up Bc it is typical of the show and should be interesting to see how he again maneuvers his way out of a sticky situation. He then is at the House of Parliament meeting an important person and manages to accidentally create an incident that leaves the second party in serious trouble. Though this had the good makings of an interesting plot, for some reason it is rushed through and barely addressed. It seemed pointless and a waste of time. Best part about that was the guest star who played Kath from "Kath and Kim." Suddenly he is at dinner with his ex, a pregnant Missy, and Nicole. This is where it gets confusing. Kath (don't know name yet) is ease dropping on their conversations, in such a way that one would think it is going to play a major role in this episode. But it doesn't. Instead the next time Missy is on screen, she already has the baby and somehow months have passed. The next plot revolves around a possible terrorist attack at the House of Parliament, which creates turmoil for the arrival of an old friend of Cleaver's who is now Secretary of State for the US. Suddenly we find out that the American is in search for Greene so that they can "party like it's 1999." I assume that this many plots shoved into the opening of season 5 is setting up the entire series. Fingers crossed!
I gave it 5 stars because the actors are amazing, Cleaver's one liners and glib remarks are still entertaining, and the fact that the show hasn't let me down before. But hopefully there is growth in the characters and we will see cleaver become the good guy that lurks underneath his Peter Pan persona and his ex will finally have a storyline that is worthy of the independent woman that she was in seasons past. Possibly his son will be the Man cleaver would have been had he not become so jaded and lacking a moral compass, and Missy and the baby will have a purpose independent of time fillers.
