Solve one riddle, open up two more
tedscoasterchannel2 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This series keeps getting more and more mysterious. Although they answered one major riddle, they added even more than before. And they have the guts to implement plot points, where almost every other german TV-show would not be brave enough.

This is german television as good as it hasn't been in the last 35 years since Das Boot was released.

The first big "wow" moment in Dark
Revalopod12 October 2020
This is the episode where Dark becomes not just a great scifi mystery show, but a great mindbending scifi mystery show with mind blowing plot twists. Not one of the best episodes, but probably one of the most important.

Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost, the cold open is a masterclass in editing and directing, it honestly is so visually arresting!

This episode had a massive reveal that all the previous episodes hinted at but surprised me nonetheless. I didn't expect the writers to reveal the Mikkel mystery so early, I thought they'd save that for the penultimate episode of the season or the finale. None of this is to say I don't trust them, this show has been spectacular so far.

I'm truly starting to hate Hannah - past and present she's the same manipulative, conniving, little witch. I hope Katharina kills her lol, that'll never happen - I don't think this is that kind of series.

Bartosz (the two-timing best friend) is in for a treat when he finds out he's been two-timed as well! Hoorah Jonas!

"Truth" certainly revealed significant truths about these characters and the overall story, most importantly that, everything is connected.

A well set up reveal
TheDonaldofDoom31 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Well. Whether you predicted it or not, the twist that Mikkel or Michael is a stroke of genius. It's the first real moment that tells you what sort of show Dark is. That said, the way it's executed is a tad heavy-handed for my taste. It didn't need to go into split-screen and repeatedly bash us over the head with the names Mikkel and Michael next to each other. But there's no denying it's a superbly handled twist. And the whole lead-up to the reveal id excellent as well. Hannah meeting Mikkel for the first time is a big clue.

Noah's introduction is well handled too. He's a creepy guy, who comes across as villainous before we even see him do anything villainous. His mere presence is something that heightens the tension. And it turns out he's been influencing events already. Unlike what I previously thought, Noah is not the Stranger. But that poses the question, who is the Stranger?

As for the rest of the episode, it veers between intriguing mystery and overserious soap. The soapy parts aren't awful, and are made interesting by the fact that we see them from two different times. But the characters involved in the soapy elements aren't deep enough to justify the amount of time that is devoted them. Dark's plot is multi-layered, but character's personalities are not so much, at least not at the moment. Sure, Jonas was hiding his treatment for PTSD. But the characterisation isn't good enough for me to care about that so deeply. It's almost like the characters are treated as puzzles in themselves by the writers, rather than as people.

8.5/10

Wow.

I'm currently rewatching for the third time and this is the episode that made me fall in love with the series. The plot twist at the end is amazing and it's the first of a series of incredible and unexpected plot twists.

Unexpected turn

Warning: Spoilers
To be fair, I was expecting NOAH to be MIKKEL in the present. I never thought of Jonas father to be Mikkel. Starting of this series was quite boring but this is the best episode yet.

A step up.
TheFirst0125 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode gives the first big answer of the show and although it was revealed now, I would have prefered to have it given to me earlier so I wouldn't be confused before with the Michael/Mikkel names but then again maybe that wouldn't make sense. I'm confused why the previous episode was so low rated in comparison to this one as to me it's equally as good. I guess people have a knack for big reveals and makes it have a discrepancy in the ratings. I give this episode an 8.6/10.

Great episode few problems
nathanthespursfan1 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Watching this show or the first time and it is very good. Bit late but oh well. The twist in this episodes is well done but leaves a few problems. First of all, wouldn't Hannah notice that the mikkel who disappeared was the same mikkel she met in her childhood? Surely she would know that her husband was the kid who just disappeared right? Hopefully it goes into more explanation in next episodes. Second of all, we found out that jonas is technically related to Martha since her brother is jonas' dad. So if they have a relationship in later episodes that is incest right? Anyway good episode

"Twist"
sheepandsharks8 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a bit surprised at all the reviews about how mind-blowing the twist/reveal at the end of the episode was. I realized the "twist" about 15 minutes into episode 3, and I thought it was supposed to be obvious to all viewers at that point. I'd say the BIGGER twist was learning what Hannah did to Ulrich. She's been a very sad and sympathetic character thus far, so seeing this villainous turn and how mentally unstable she is was a big shock.

Regardless, this is a great episode, and I'm excited to see where the rest of the season goes. Learning a bit more about Noah and keeping the Stranger as a complete mystery has to be the most compelling aspect of the episode.

Drama

Warning: Spoilers
Events of episode 5:In 1986, Mikkel is visited in the hospital by a priest: Noah. After having discovered Ulrich and Katharina's affair, Hannah falsely tells the police that she saw Ulrich rape Katharina, and Ulrich is arrested.

In 2019, with Yasin also vanished, panic is starting to spread, and Charlotte accuses Peter of being involved in the boys' disappearances. Hannah wants to resume her affair with Ulrich, but he angrily refuses. At the hotel, the Stranger tells Regina to deliver a package to Jonas while he is away for a few days, and at Michael's grave, the Stranger approaches Jonas, telling him that his father once saved his life. Bartosz meets Erik Obendorf's drug supplier, who is also Noah. Later, Jonas receives the Stranger's package, containing a light, a Geiger counter, and Michael's suicide letter. In the letter Jonas' father explains that on 4 November 2019, he travelled back to 1986. There he stayed and grew up, raised by Ines, eventually marrying Hannah and fathering Jonas. Thus Mikkel Nielsen became Michael Kahnwald.

Review: Some interesting developpment of character. Love each moment and the editing of the TV show. We want to know more about the story and its still enjoyable and the mysteries arround it want us to know more even if we have some revelation.

That ended up being longer than I'd intended LOL
Neptune1654 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
You know what's so interesting? Everybody has a different character they connect with emotionally. Dark is so strong, because it's about people. The cliffhangers are so good because the show runners really got a story to tell. And what a story! During the Mikkel and Michael reveal. I'm sad because of what happened to him, I find it very sweet that Ines (perhaps with a yes from Michael as well?) changed his birth date to November 5th, the day he came into her life. I don't think it was Mikkel's original birthday, but it certainly was Michael's, and continued being so for the next 33 years. In retrospect it's also really tragic, because earlier in 2019 Michael hung himself, and Jonas is barely coping with this trauma when five months later, he has a second traumatic experience losing Mikkel, hours before he has to experience his dad's birthday for the first time when Michael isn't around. Which hit me really hard upon rewatches, because in ep.2 (which was on November 5th), we're busy basking in the Nielsen family's agitation, but if you look back, Jonas wakes up from a nightmare where he sees Michael, right on the morning of his birthday, and spends most of the rest of the day lying on the floor of Michael's studio (partially why Jonas is able to notice the loose board in the ceiling and ends up finding the map). I'm pretty sure Hannah remembers what date it is as well, but she's practically running away from it. Probably why she was extra desperate to be with Ulrich on that day, calls him repeatedly and practically ends up cornering him at the police station. I don't want to comment on Hannah's relationship with Michael, but it still made me a lot sadder because there certainly had been a little spark there (as you can see from their interaction as kids), and it's disappointing that Hannah's obsession with Ulrich ultimately overpowered everything else, as always, and possibly did not allow what could've been a healthier relationship and a happier life for her. The only person who probably visited the grave that day was Ines. I would like to think she did, as she does in this episode. Though idk what kind of emotional turmoil she was going through after reading the letter.

Cool twist and all..
jkent-6027128 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Hannah would have never noticed that Mikkel and her husband looked the exact same in photos as children?

It's a cool idea I just feel people in a small town would notice that they look the same. Maybe they will touch on this later..

Great reveal

A fine episode this one, finally revealing some of the great secrets that have been building up since the first episode. The climax is extremely satisfying and there's one shocking character twist I didn't see coming. Very well made and suspenseful as always.

Now, I'm really interested in the show, what a twist, I hope it doesn't get deviated or corrupted like the other shows of this genre.

There is something I would like to say tho, why the f would u want me to write at least 150 characters in my review, this is not an exam it's just a review about 1 episode, well I guess here's ur 150 characters lol.

That reveal!
and_mikkelsen3 June 2023
Man.. that was one amazing reveal that had me in a state of awe! This proved how the past and present is connected and even offered some meaning to the words about the beginning being the end!

We are still only tryi g to græsplæne the rules of the show, but things are deffinetely getting more exciting with conflicts lurering in the background! As we got to know more and more about our characters, past and present gets more exciting, as well as answering questions about relationships between characters in the present!

I am still eager to learn more about the stranger, Noah and the scientist! So glad I started watching this show!

Questions !!
haidarkanaan8 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
On the second watch of this episode , i have this irritating question : Hannah met Mikkel when she was 14 yo , she remembers the first meeting ,also she is a friend of Ulriech family , did not she remember that she saw mikkel somewhere else ? Did not she think that this boy is a clone of my husband ?

Is this possible ? To forgot how your partner looks like ? Could anyone remember the first meeting but don't notice that this boy is the same boy that disappeared ? Also the picture of the 86 school students , Mikkel is sitting there in the middle of the picture waiting anyone with 80 iq to notice him ..

Obsession and Vindictiveness
Hitchcoc28 November 2023
First of all, Hannah. She doesn't realize, as a little kid, how destructive her words can be. When she spots the two having sex, she makes it seem like it was a rape. She destroys the person with whom she is supposedly in love. The cop gets a chance to get rid of his "adversary." The whole thing with time and connectedness is wonderful. We are seeing more and more characters being developed. I almost wrote this show off and now I'm absolutely enthralled by its stark development. Once again, it all comes out of the "dark," and getting into the light is nearly impossible. There are cheaters, haters, deceivers, and secrets lurking behind ever bush. What a great series and it gets better.

Very strong episode with a great reveal
snoozejonc18 April 2024
Deception is prominent as the Hannah, Ulrich and Katherina triangle is in focus in both timelines.

Very little plot detail can be revealed without spoiling, but it is safe to to say that events set in both 1986 and 2019 unfold in a compelling way. The writers connect individuals and themes superbly. Characters like Hannah, Ulrich, Katherina, and Mikkel are used particularly well.

When certain truths are revealed the impact does not disappoint, especially one moment that the past few episodes have been building up to cleverly.

Visually it is excellent, with great cinematography, art design, sound and editing. The split screen helps the brain keep track of who is who just well as show certain parallels.

The truth is funny!
sumonohemod18 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As this show is a science fiction, its sure that there will be so many things that we can't explain using logic. But this high rating seems to me very funny! I don't wanna hurt people, but the real truth is, in sci-fi shows/movies, when ppl don't understand clearly, they like to give rating 10. And following them some ppl who tried to understand, gave 9, because they wanna know the world that they really understood it.

Mikkel & Michael both lived in the same world before the suicide of Michael. Logically its totally impossible, but they showed the people that its logically right.

BTW, if you wanna let the world notice that you know something, say this sentence, "everything is connected"
