Deftly acted slice of Romanian life
shakercoola26 September 2021
A Romanian drama; A story about about two men, a divorced father and his son, who are running away from their own partner issues for a day, travelling cross-country for a festive family reunion in an unreliable car that requires a lot of care and attention. Part character study, part road movie, it has a theme about emotional baggage and complications of a broken home, and how adultery figures in the context of father-son relationship with the titular car almost symbolic of breakdown of fidelity. The humorous moments, thanks to a brilliant performance by Adrian Titieni, make it very watchable, made all the more funnier by the reactions from the characters around him. The conversations are organic and realistic and perfectly timed stream of consciousness, unfolding naturally. Some scenes which go beyond convention for their length are intended for reflection but none outstay their welcome. All in all, a complex family portrait and nicely photographed in wintry Romania and Moldova.

Great acting; very realistic

The story goes like life goes: ups and downs, no drama nor euphoria.

The acting enhances this account of life: dialogues are so real and watching these actors portraying life as it is, is very refreshing.

Scenes and many elements (food, drinks, cultural references) are typically Romanian. A nice movie that can introduce viewers to the Romanian way of life.
