Very interesting take on the Epic!!
sriramthestranger25 October 2019
The plot of this series is a courtroom drama between the characters when they meet in the afterlife. The content is engaging as all clever and cunning acts done by every major character of Mahabharath is discussed in the form of courtroom drama with Chitragupta being the judge. The series identifies the grey parts of the epic and gives better answers to the sinful acts committed by the characters (includes even Nakul, Sahadev, Dushashan, Vidur). Every episode is the allegations faced and justifications told by the characters and helps to view the epic from their point of view. One of the best and interesting adaptations of the Mahabharath Epic. A worthy watch on Netflix!!!

Meaningful Content

I was surprised to see this series on Netflix this week. Being a binge watcher completed the series over a long break weekend. I was hearing about Dharamshetra for the first time. It was amazing to see and hear the reasoning of some of the actions done by pandava's and Kaurava's during the war. It's one of the well executed series based on indian history. Will watch it again sometime in future for sure. My favorite characters Suryodhan and Chitragupta.

Brilliant show. A completely new and different take on Mahabharata, from the perspective of different characters. I love the actors, casting and everything is so right.

A macrocosm of life
nsmohanram23 May 2021
Dharma Kshetra, in Hindi (with English subtitles) is a brilliant adapatation of the Mahabharat. The events take place after the war after all the protagonists (except /Ashvattama) had died. It is set in the court of the divine arbiter Chitragupta.

One by one, the charcters of the epic; Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, Dhritarashtra, Sakuni, Dharmaraj, Bhim, Arjun, Nakul, Sahadev, Draupadi, Kunti, Gandhari, Duryodhan, Karn, Dushasan, Ashvattama and even Vedavyas are put in the dock to answer accusations levelled against them. The twenty-six episode serial ends with Bhagwan Shri Krishna himself explaining his actions, which some times looked dowright unethical.

No character in Mahabharat was perfect. Each one was a fallible being combating his or her personal demons and was a complex amalgam of nobility and meanness, forgiveness and vengefulness, love and rancor and sacrifice and greed.

The epic is a macrocosm of our own lives- layered with contradictions and conflicts. The writing and acting were uniformly good, occassionally even brilliant- Duryodhan and Karn were outstanding.

Dharma Kshetra is a tour-de-force, a really great small screen production.

It reinforced my belief that Mahabharat in sheer sweep and grandeur eclipses Homer's Iliad and Odysseus. I was also exposed to nuances in the epic, which I had not been aware off earlier.

Something every 90s kid needed
kushal-1030011 June 2021
Growing up in India, it was hard not to watch and get influenced by the original Mahabharat series. While it was great, it never got too deep into explaining why certain actions were taken by the main characters and their backgrounds. This series fills the gap. It breathes a new life into the epic and takes it to the next level. I don't know anyone who has not liked this series. It's brilliance is in it's theme and writing. The actors are mostly good, Suyodhana/Duryodhana is the best of the lot and makes you think twice about the preconceived notions about his evil nature, and instead makes you feel bad for him. I can't think of another mythology being dissected and explained in a manner like this. This is a binge watch. Wish there was another season. The writers deserve an award.

One of the best show ever on mythology
rishivij22 May 2020
I was never a great fan of mythology but after watching Dharamakshestra my views on mythology have completely changed ..... This is such a well made series that I watched back to back 8 episodes on the trot on Saturday night .... The concept is Amazing as it gives every character of Mahabharata the chance to explain his views and most of the stories I had never heard earlier .... The writing is the backbone of this wonderful series .... All the Actors played their roles really well but I liked characters of Draupadi and Duryodhan the most .... A must watch series for every Indian ..... I had never heard of this series before but few of my cousins recommended me this series during lockdown in india and I am grateful to them for recommending this to me ...... I finished the whole series in 5 days ....

Worth every minute

Dharmakshetra Netflix series: I am glad I've accidentally came across this show on Netflix.

Though skipped it a couple of times thinking "why watch a mythological show that had been packaged many times by many", I am glad I took a chance to watch one episode and it just went on until I finished the whole series. Not disappointed at all.

Truly this is refreshingly different from the Mahabharat extravaganzas any of us had ever watched.

No extravagant ostentatious sets, No heavy makeup, No gaudy jewellery - not even those huge gems studded golden crowns. No vigorously imaginative artistic style. No exuberance what so ever at all. - Probably because the souls need none of these.

It just had one purgatory set and perhaps just one additional room which was altered for some flashback scenes of various key incidents.

Very simple clothes and easily understandable shuddh Hindi. The flashbacks and war scenes were to the point carefully crafted.

It's not a stereotyped linear narrative. It's a hybrid narrative which is non-linear, quest centric, view point oriented.

All episodes happen on a purgatory set where the main characters (both protagonists and antagonists) of Mahabharata blame, accuse with allegations, provide counter allegations which are further brainstormed in the court of Chitragupta (the Angel / Demi God who keeps records of the deeds of all human beings)

Each character was put on trial in the Dharmakshetra, the 'court of righteousness'. Everyone's inner mind and thoughts were exposed as they were allowed to openly and freely speak their mind and heart.

Every character has shades of grey and supporting reasons rather justifications. Each character is crafted in a way that nothing beyond human emotions are reason for the great battle of Kurukshetra.

Good screenplay - In some episodes it appears to be little stretched and repetitive but given that point of view (Why a particular individual character did what he or she did on earth) has to be explained in a plausible manner, it's worth that stretch.

Almost all the actors are from the small screen. Watching 'Crime Petrol' actors in the mythological characters was initially hilarious but because of the seriousness of the subject itself slowly I came out of that cynical mindset and appreciated each actor's effort. No doubt every actor proved their mettle.

Recommend this series for those who appreciate philosophical thought process, and logic seekers from the great text 'Mahabharata'.

Masterpiece
itsmayankjohri6 May 2023
When someone has watched magnanimous Mahabharat of a stalwart B. R Chopra, expectations are bound to usher.

Different adaptations since that early 90's show came but none could do the justification that this epic needed.

Problem with the current generation and the haters and down voters is that they simply forgot that, this show is shown as an afterlife of that saga.

This series is a brilliant adaptation and in a true sense is a real successor of the original masterpiece.

Thanks to the creators that they put in so much effort to detailed out the minutest of the detail.

I challenge everyone who felt if any falsification of facts is shown anytime in any episode.

Creative freedom was duly justified.

To the creators:- Last episode was the best and for those who love Sri Krishna won't be able to control their tears.

Some information missing/incorrect
ashwiniwadikar18 February 2024
There are some wrong or missed out information with the series. If claiming it to be mythological, information should be correct.

Draupadi - episode 1 - this show have shown draupadi of age 7-8 years. This is incorrect.

Draupadi was born 25 years old.

Shakuni - he was angry with Bhishm as well. That is completely missed out.

Duryodhan dialogues are very novice.

Karna- the kundal and kavach ( the earrings and vest of gold) of karna was not shown at the time of draupadi swaymver. Karna was born with kundal and kavach!

However, the actor have played very well. They have done justice with the characters.

Good Concept, Poor Content . .
cssharmanilesh25 March 2022
So many mistakes that it is impossible to list it here. Made totally based on the popular narratives. No research done on based on the original VedaVyasa Mahabharata. Please refrain from putting it in line based on B R Chopra's tv series.

Excellent Perspective
mushymansi19 October 2023
Loved the concept and unique take on Mahabharat. People criticising for small details should consider the bigger picture and message the entire concept is trying to convey. Hats off to the writer for brilliant concept!!!

I have learnt that, our actions do have a reaction and you have to face the consequences of it if not in this birth but in the forthcoming births. You cannot escape it. This was clear through the narratives.

The arguments and counter arguments are convincing and appear reality. They clear lot of our doubts as well.

Actors have also done a great job. Direction screenplay verything is to the point.

The best takes on Mahabharat after BR Chopra
krissarda10 February 2024
I was sick and tired of the pathetic attempts at Mahabharat by Ekta Kapoor and her ilk. But this show comes as a unique take on the scripture. The strength of the show is the amazing script and dialogues, and how they bring out the unknown and not so popular stories from the epic. I had so many questions after watching BR Chopra's Mahabharat (which I consider at par with Lord of the Rings). Why did Krishna not stop the war, why did Yudhistir bet his brothers and wife in the gamble, was Duryodhan a selfish friend who used Karna for his own good, etc etc. The show answers all these questions basis actual stories from the scripture. An absolute must watch for all. Another show I would recommend is Upanishad Ganga from Doordarshan (now on Youtube)

Good concept poor execution
rgohil-4256521 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show had so much potential to execute a brilliant concept. But writers had their own agenda to push under the so-called creative freedom. The content is not well researched. Mahabharat has many adaptations in different languages. The original Vyas Maharabharat is in Sanskrit and many incidents depicted in this show are not the part of Vyas Mahabharat. Using these incidents to justify the actions of any character is factually incorrect and spreads wrong information.

Duryodhana, Dusshasan, Gandhari and Dhritarashtra - are actually showing no remorse for the Adharma they did and seem to be justifying their actions even after death. Also, Duryodhana's constant childish display of aggression is irritating.

No character is build properly. Not sure what the rush was to finish all characters in one season because it feels incomplete.

The show also portrays Dasi/maid culture incorrectly.

Won't go into too many details here, but overall this show seems to be the lost opportunity to show some lesser known facts and knowldege of Mahabharat as wel as the lessons we all can learn from this epic.

Very wrong dipiction of charactors and distortion of incidents to suit the writers narrative
adimanit-0085213 July 2020
For the one who are liking it and giving out 9 or 10 stars are people who don't know mahabharat and are building their critical thinking based on false and distorted fact which are just used to suit narrative. So I request you to please watch Br chopra mahabharat aur star plus mahabharat (which is true to some extent) aur read it. But don't watch this show otherwise you would enjoy it but will also gain wrong knowledge about many incidents of mahabharat and will not consider it as epic as it is really

Don't waste your time ...
amitraj7814 August 2020
Original Facts are tempered, logic given are irrelevant, immature, childish and Impractical. Writers own agenda is being pushed people minds. Characters are dead but still threatening each other With fight and aggression ... what a useless writing and direction. Disappointed!! Waste of time..

Watch this only if you hate yourself enough to waste precious time of your life.
famiebrahma23 May 2021
The actors have left no stone unturned to make it as painful as possible for the audience to watch. The director must have been a stoner without a doubt. The kind of stoner who says, 'arey tera bhai aaj tere ko jannat dikhayega' and tell you to jump off a building.

Mahabharata is a tale full of potential, it consists of different philosophy and ideas that is relevant even today. Ekta Kapoor and her production house should stay light years distance from such scholarly texts which needs proper functioning brain to be able to understand and interpret. Though the idea was good, the product was nowhere close to the idea. It was like kindergarten children planning to built a spaceship.

There was no depth in the scenes or the dialogues, it was like hormones filled teenagers conversing and argueing at the bus on their way back home.

Even as a Hindu, I felt really insulted.

It looks like C grade adaptation of the epic, not even B grade, mind you.

Ridiculous custing makes this project worthless. This tv series didn't follow The Mahabharat thoroughly. It's also a monotonous series. I never recommend it to anybody.
