Four years after Covid-19 upended the world, we're all still just scrambling to catch up. So many industries are having a rough go of it, and Hollywood is no exception. Even the almighty Marvel Studios has fallen on hard times, with several Marvel Cinematic Universe films seeing lower-than-expected returns at the box office. That downward trend culminated with last year's "The Marvels" becoming the lowest-grossing MCU movie ever. How dire was it? The follow-up to the billion-dollar smash-hit that was 2019's "Captain Marvel" made less than DC's notorious "Green Lantern" from 2011, the first Nicolas Cage "Ghost Rider" movie, and the massive flop that was Fox's X-Men pic "Dark Phoenix." Just let that sink in for a minute.
So, what gives? Could it be that Disney saturating the market with MCU media, with an emphasis on quantity over quality, hurt the brand? Or that the continuing impact of the pandemic on...

The X-Men have finally come back home to the MCU after the acquisition of Fox Studios by Disney. The characters will be making their official MCU debut with the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine, which sees Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and a whole bunch of other actors crossing over to the franchise.
The MCU has also reportedly begun work on making an X-Men film. An industry insider recently reported that the studio was looking for writers who could balance comedy and drama. The report also mentioned that the new films would focus more on the female mutants. While previous female-centered Marvel films have not worked for the franchise, it might just be the best foot forward with the X-Men.

Every couple of months in comic book-centric social media circles, someone reposts a comics page in which Deadpool shooting Spider-Man in the head or decapitating an exhausted Bruce Banner. These panels usually spark arguments about whether or not these kills are in character (they aren’t) or if the entire thing is a joke (it is).
Eventually, someone points out that the pages come from Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, a 2012-2013 miniseries by Cullen Bunn and Dalibor Talajic. The story involves Deadpool’s fourth-wall-breaking powers driving him so mad that he decides to kill all the other Marvel characters because they’re fictional and their lives don’t matter. Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe may have inspired controversy, but it also inspired several sequels, including Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again.
From all that we’ve seen so far, Deadpool & Wolverine seems to have little in common with Bunn and Talajic’s take.

It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

Taylor Swift has conquered the world of music, and it's long been rumored that the next step in her career is the movies.
She has her own eponymous production company, for one. In 2020, she starred in the documentary "Miss Americana," and in 2021, she directed a short film adapting her song "All Too Well," starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien. Aside from a handful of supporting roles in several films, she also took the 2023 box office by storm with the "Eras Tour" concert film.
Swift has a passionate fanbase, one that is famous for finding (or creating) supposedly hidden messages across her lyrics. Now, her newly released 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department," has whipped up a new Swiftie theory.
The last track of "The Tortured Poets Department" — "Clara Bow" — concludes with the line: "The future's bright and dazzling." Fans jumped to the obvious conclusion; of course, Swift is hinting to...

Famke Janssen is not sure what Marvel has planned for the X-Men saga but doesn’t shut the door on the idea of reprising her role of Jean Grey / Phoenix.
Janssen originated the X-Men role in the 2000 film and would go on to play the mutant in 2003’s X2 and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The actress also made cameos in 2013’s The Wolverine and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
“I don’t know. I mean, I didn’t expect to come back after dying as Jean Grey,” Janssen told ComicBook in an interview. “I came back as the Phoenix [The Last Stand], and I came back in flashback scenes in The Wolverine, and then in Days of Future Past.”

If the massacre of Mutants in Genosha delivered a brutal gut punch in last week’s episode of X-Men’97, the recent episode will come off as an utter shock to the fans, as news of Charles Xavier’s survival has changed the understanding of the situation in a massive way. For over a year or so, the X-Men were led to believe that Gyrich’s assassination attempt claimed Charles’ life, and the team struggled to come to terms with the reality that the professor wasn’t there to guide them. Magneto became the new leader according to Charles’ last wishes and faced hurdles from Mutant hating humankind from the beginning. Still, to honor his late friend’s memory, he showed mercy to the wrongdoers, an act that helped Mutants gain acceptance on the world stage as the sovereignty of Mutant nation Genosha was recognized by the Un.

This article contains spoilers for X-Men ’97 episode 4.
Rising from the ashes of X-Men: The Animated Series like a Dark Phoenix, X-Men ‘97 has done a stellar job of bringing fan-favorites like Scott, Jean, and Wolverine back into the fray. While Marvel Studios’ producer Brad Winderbaum has revealed that production is already underway for seasons 2 and 3, some sneaky hints suggest that the lineup of this colorful cartoon caper could soon look a little different.
The Original X-Men
X-Men ‘97 has largely stuck with the series staples of X-Men: The Animated Series, albeit with the additions of Morph and Bishop while swapping out Professor Xavier for a reformed Magneto. Several Easter eggs have referenced both old and new teams, with the season premiere reminding us the current roster is far from the original lineup of Charles Xavier’s Gifted Youngsters.
A nostalgic picture of the “original” team is on display at the school.

When Tye Sheridan was just 11 years old, something crazy happened: Terrence Malick came looking for him.
Specifically, the beloved American auteur wanted to cast a trio of young brothers for his “The Tree of Life,” co-starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain. The vast majority of kids Malick and his team saw were — like Texas native Sheridan — totally green to this acting thing.
Sixteen years later, Sheridan isn’t green anymore. The actor is only continuing to build out his resume, adding producing into the mix with his most recent feature film, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “Asphalt City,” which debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival under the title “Black Flies.”
Still, ask Sheridan about where his initial love of moviemaking came from, and it’s like he’s right back on Malick’s set. “I was randomly cast in the film. They recruited 10,000 kids in the state of Texas to come and audition.

X-Men: The Animated Series was a famous animated comic book series on TV from 1992-1997, with five fantastic seasons. The show following members of Charles Xavier’s X-Men superhero team was so successful that reruns were aired for years. According to viewers, it remains one of the most iconic Marvel adaptations, perfectly depicting intriguing storylines like the Dark Phoenix saga, which movies like X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) and X-Men: Days of Future Past(2014) tried unsuccessfully to bring to the big screen. 2024 Marvel’s X-Men 97 will be trying to recapture the magic of the Og series by continuing a day after the 1992 animated series left off. Saying that James Marsden rose to fame as Cyclops (Scott Summers) after he starred in Fox’s 2000 flick adaptation of the mutant team, X-Men, won’t be wrong. Playing the mutant Scott Summers, who shoots intense energy beams from his eyes, Marsden made his X-Men team debut alongside Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, and Halle Berry’s Storm.
Despite being a prominent character in Marvel Comics, Cyclops’ role in the X-Men films was nevertheless greatly diminished. And he seemed so unimportant that the third installment of the series, X-Men: The Last Stand, could have done without him.

X-Men ’97 Spoiler Alert: Fans of Cyclops Would be Disappointed Again After Watching This Marvel Show
X-Men 97 has finally started by dropping two episodes, and the fans are delighted to get their favorite animated series back. The original X-Men: The Animated Series was a massive hit among Marvel fans. It formed an essential part of many people’s childhoods and was also one of the primary reasons behind the popularity of the mutant team among non-comic book readers. However, an interesting take on the latest series may disappoint some fans.

Cyclops is one of the primary characters in the X-Men franchise. He has been one of the most fan-favorite characters in comics, movies, and the animated show. In the original "X-Men" animated series, we're introduced to Marvel's mutant characters by way of Jubilee, a teen girl who has just discovered that she has mutant powers, which puts her in danger of being pursued by the dangerous Sentinels under the Mutant Registration Act. Rescued by the X-Men, Jubilee becomes a young new recruit on the team, and she acts as a proxy for the audience to be introduced to the world of Professor Charles Xavier and his School for the Gifted.
However, when "X-Men: The Animated Series" came to an end with the fifth season, Jubilee had become a full-fledged member of the team. Her wardrobe even changed to reflect that she'd grown up a bit, and the episode "Jubilee's Fairytale Theater" affirmed that the rest of the X-Men viewed her as an equally formidable mutant. Superheroes never really die, and that's especially true of the X-Men. Across multiple comics, films, and cartoons, Marvel's merry band of mutants have been resurrected time and time again in various forms and protocols. Yet, for fans of a certain age, the only adaptation that really matters is X-Men: The Animated Series, a beloved cartoon that took on mammoth storylines such as the Dark Phoenix saga and Days Of Future Past with impressive comic book accuracy. In fact, an entire generation was raised on nothing more than those original five seasons and a bowl of cereal every Saturday morning from 1992 to 1997 (not counting reruns). But now, three decades on, the series that started it all — and that theme tune, of course — is rising like a phoenix of its own with a new sequel show from none other than Marvel Studios.

In 2011, it might have seemed like Jessica Chastain emerged out of nowhere as a formidable actress, when she appeared in no less than five movies — including Best Picture nominees “The Help” and “The Tree of Life” — and scored her first-ever Oscar nomination. But Chastain worked for years to get to that point, acting in plays from a young age and attending the prestigious Juilliard School. “I struggled for so long to try to create a career,” she told the New York Times in 2017.
In the decade since her breakout year, Chastain has received acclaim for a variety of different roles — from her Oscar-nominated lead part in “Zero Dark Thirty” to her lauded supporting work in “A Most Violent Year” to even a superhero franchise with “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” She’s worked alongside top filmmakers like Terrence Malick, Kathryn Bigelow, J.C. I think we all know that Deadpool and Wolverine will be packed with cameos from across the Marvel Multiverse, but one character who won’t be appearing is Juggernaught, at least not with Vinnie Jones in the costume.
Vinnie Jones played Juggernaut in X-Men: The Last Stand, and he recently told Yahoo Movies UK that he was actually asked to reprise the role for Deadpool and Wolverine, but they couldn’t reach a deal. “Funnily enough I just got asked to do ‘Deadpool,’ the new one now, and I spoke to the director and I just said it’s such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically,” Jones explained. “I mean it had its mental toll as well because you’re in it and you can’t do anything all day, you can only drink through a straw. Till plays Garret Van Ness, with Robinson as Elias Teller, Silvers as Dahlia Teller, Johnson as Albert Mason, Franciosi as Trisha Van Ness, and Del Riego as Lilla Belle. As previously announced, Lena Heady and Gillian Anderson lead the cast, as Fiona Nolan and Constance Van Ness, respectively.
Created and exec produced by Sutter, who also serves as showrunner, The Abandons follows a group of diverse, outlier families pursuing their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, as a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. Apart from a packed movie calendar, 2024 is also the year for Marvel to give animation more importance. The popular 90s show X-Men: The Animated Series will see a revival on Disney+ as X-Men ’97, and is due to premiere on the platform in March. Taking off from where its predecessor ended, the show will comprise 10 episodes that will follow the famous mutants on dangerous new missions after the loss of their leader, Professor X.
X-Men ‘97 premiers on Disney+ on March 20th, 2024
Along with the marquee characters like Wolverine, Storm, Beast, and Rogue who will be central to the plot, the mutant shapeshifter Morph will also have a pivotal role in the show. X-Men fans though, are questioning a significant change regarding the s*xuality of the character which they believe, will dilute his importance in the series.

Deadpool 3 has its official title: Deadpool & Wolverine. The first teaser trailer for the movie hit the internet during Super Bowl Lviii, giving superhero film fans their first glimpse at the wackiness it will offer.
One of the biggest reveals from the trailer was confirmation of the longstanding rumor that the Time Variance Authority would appear in the movie. The Time Variance Authority (or Tva for short) is the temporal enforcement organization seen in the Disney+ Loki series, which ensures time flows as it should in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Most people assume Deadpool and Wolverine will be tasked with killing rogue variants of live-action Marvel characters who deviated from the Sacred Timeline. However, a new theory by the YouTube channel New Rockstars suggests they’ll be tasked with fixing the lousy writing and plot holes in various live-action Marvel Studios and Fox superhero films.

For an entire generation, the adventures of the X-Men first hooked them on the small screen. From 1992 to 1997, X-Men: The Animated Series brought the adventures of Professor X and his band of mutants to life, dialling into major storylines like the Dark Phoenix saga and Days Of Future Past along the way. Now, decades since the cartoon wrapped, it’s getting an official follow-up from none other than Marvel Studios – turning back the clock for sequel series X-Men ’97, boasting an art style that tips its hat towards the classic ‘90s look.
But while X-Men ’97 will bring back a host of beloved characters, it’s taking the mutants into uncertain times too. After all, the original show wrapped with an episode that saw a dying Xavier head off to the Shi’ar homeworld, leaving his powered-up family behind. “This season is very much about what happens when the X-Men...

For fifty-nine episodes, Sophie Turner played the role of Sansa Stark on the hit series Game of Thrones. For sixty-two episodes, Kit Harington played the role of Jon Snow on that same show. And now Turner and Harington are set to work together again, as Deadline reports that they have both signed on to star in the Gothic horror film The Dreadful! This film is coming our way from writer/director Natasha Kermani, who has previously directed the thriller Shattered, the sci-fi drama Imitation Girl, and the horror film Lucky, as well as multiple short films and a segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/85.
The Dreadful will be set against the backdrop of the War of the Roses, which took place from 1455 to 1487. The story follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law Morwen, who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns,...

When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige was a genius when crafting the entire Thanos saga from beginning to end. Granted, Phases Four and Five feel misguided and scattershot, but generally speaking, Kevin Feige has done a great job in bringing these comic book heroes to life. So after the failure of Dark Phoenix, there was excitement when Disney finally got the rights to their X-Men characters. It’ll be a while before we see the new generation of X-Men since they’re a big component of Deadpool III. Plus, there are rumors that some of the old X-Men...

Unusually, an embargo means reviews for Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom are being held until the film is already in UK cinemas.
Here’s an unusual situation which has happened barely a handful of times. This week, Warner Bros will be releasing its big superhero sequel, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. Starring Jason Momoa and directed by James Wan, it’s the follow-up to the $1.1bn-grossing 2018 original movie. Much is expected of it.
Appreciating there’s been the usual tittle tattle that all hasn’t been well behind the scenes, the release is nonetheless a major one for Warner Bros. The movie lands in UK cinemas on December 21st (that’d be Thursday) and on US screens a day later, on December 22nd (that’d be Friday).

"Superman: Legacy" keeps coming together; Nicholas Hoult will reportedly be joining the James Gunn-directed superhero film as Lex Luthor, the Man of Steel's enduring yet all too human archnemesis. At this time, Deadline is reporting that Hoult has a locked deal with Warner Bros but The Hollywood Reporter claims the deal is still being negotiated (and was already in talks before the SAG-AFTRA strike earlier this year).
Previously, it had been confirmed that Superman himself would be played by relative newcomer David Corenswet ("Pearl") while Rachel Brosnahan ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel") has been cast as Lois Lane. Now, Hoult rounds out this trio as the other most important "LL" in Clark Kent's life. Another villain has already been confirmed to be in "Superman: Legacy" (The Engineer as played by María Gabriela De Faría), but I can't imagine that character will take precedence when Lex Luthor is in the picture.

The situation with "The Marvels" has gone from bad to record-breaking levels of bad. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened last weekend to a pretty underwhelming $46.1 million, which represented the smallest opening weekend for any film in the franchise to date. Unfortunately, word of mouth has been shockingly unhelpful for the sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel" as the film utterly collapsed at the box office in its second weekend, in the process securing a record no comic book movie wants to own.
In its second frame, director Nia DaCosta's "The Marvels" took in just $10.2 million domestically, representing a whopping 78% drop compared to its already rough opening weekend (per The Numbers). That placed it at number four on the charts behind Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" ($10.3 million), "Trolls Band Together" ($30.6 million), and "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" ($44 million). To that end, it didn't help that all of those movies,...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, plus “The Marvels” and its post-credits scene.]
It was a bad weekend at the box office — certainly not a “marvels-ous” one — as the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nia DaCosta’s “The Marvels,” arrived in theaters and promptly walked away with a dismal $47 million domestic, $110 million worldwide opening, the worst opening for an MCU film ever. Also not helping: a B CinemaScore, which places the film in the bottom tier of MCU films by that metric as well (only two other MCU films have received that same grade: “Eternals” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”).
It’s unfortunate that DaCosta’s film — directed by a woman of color, featuring a female-centric story with a “diverse” cast of superheroes, and finding its best beats in humor and heart — will become inextricably linked with the “fall” of the MCU, because this kind of box office bust has long seemed inevitable for the ailing franchise.

It’s been a few months since we’ve had a superhero movie bomb on par with Marvel’s “The Marvels” — Warner Bros’ “The Flash” movie — but even that didn’t compare to the disaster we saw this past weekend. Read on for the box office report.
The fact that Brie Larson‘s introduction as Carol Danvers in “Captain Marvel” in 2019 opened with more than $150 million and grossed more than $400 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide should have made “The Marvels” a sure bet this weekend, but early tracking and slow ticket pre-sales seemed to suggest otherwise.
Regardless, Disney opened “The Marvels” in 4,030 locations with previews on Thursday after receiving mixed-to-positive reviews with a 62% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, the writing was already on the wall, as reactions to the first trailer were fairly negative, and the addition of “WandaVision” co-star Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani‘s “Ms. Marvel” to...

According to the UK Sun, the actress, 27, was seen locking lips with 29-year-old Peregrine ‘Perry’ John Dickinson Pearson heir to the 4th Viscount Cowdray, a county in Sussex Saturday on the streets of Paris in broad daylight, reports pagesix.com.

For nearly 20 years, Simon Kinberg has been one of the biggest filmmakers in Hollywood. From his first screenplay, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," becoming a blockbuster hit starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, to shepherding the "X-Men" movies for well over a decade and co-creating "Star Wars Rebels," Kinberg has certainly left his mark on the business. Now, he's making his mark on the world of premium streaming television as his sci-fi series "Invasion" is wrapping up its second season on Apple TV+.
The second season of "Invasion" picks up just months after the events of season 1, with the aliens escalating their attacks in an all-out war against the humans. If Kinberg has his way, this will just be the second part of a larger story that plays out over a couple more seasons -- but we'll get to that. Even if this show doesn't get a third season, Kinberg has plenty to keep him busy,...

Prior to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox and the studio's entire library of intellectual property, the long-running "X-Men" franchise stood out as one of Fox's most consistent (at the box office, at least) and long-running franchises. Unlike Kevin Feige's stewardship of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who is gearing up for a reboot of the property to fold into preexisting continuity, Fox opted for more of a revolving door approach. Filmmakers like Bryan Singer, Brett Ratner, Matthew Vaughn, and even James Mangold were able to take turns behind the director's chair and put their own stamps on each movie. But one major creative remained deeply involved throughout almost every installment of the main series, from 2006's "The Last Stand" to 2019's "Dark Phoenix": writer-producer Simon Kinberg.

The former couple, who separated last month after four years of marriage, are to meet to try and agree on the terms of their divorce, including custody of their daughters Willa, three, and 14-month-old Delphine, with the “Game of Thrones” actress’ lawyer pledging to go “full hog” to resolve the issues, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Judge Katherine Polk Failla, in a hearing held on Tuesday set a date of January 2 for a trial for deciding custody but she said she had “high hopes for the mediation.”
The 27-year-old actress’ lawyer, Stephen Cullen, had told the court there had been “some difficulty” between the two sides in regards to scheduling a trial but felt it would likely last no more than two-and-a-half days as it only needed to cover a “very narrow” range of issues such as...

Little good came out of "X-Men: Apocalypse." The preceding film "Days of Future Past" was meant to be a fresh start for the Merry Mutants. Instead, director Bryan Singer was exposed as creatively bankrupt; "Apocalypse" rehashes beats from Singer's previous movies like a "greatest hits" compilation. Singer always had little interest in the source material comics and "Apocalypse" showed he was out of his depth trying to make an "X-Men" movie that felt more like them.
This feeling of running on fumes, juxtaposed with a comical misuse of Oscar Isaac's talents, meant "Apocalypse" was the beginning of the end for 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" movies, not a new dawn. It's certainly when their spell over me ended.
The post-credits scene of "X-Men: Apocalypse" in particular is pointless. Its very inclusion was Fox taking a page from rival Marvel Studios, but the sequel set-up doesn't pay off.
