So the security services are willing to kill the innocent wife and children of a serving police officer and the officer himself in order to protect a secret.

Neil Cross knows a bonkers story and graphic violence can pay dividends in the ratings as it was seen with Luther. So far it has not worked with Hard Sun. I think Cross can forget about his 5 year plan for the series, it is tanking already in the ratings. I do not think the viewers want to see police officers families getting murdered on Saturday night television.

Then again the partial release of the information that the sun will spell disaster for the world in five years time brings out all sorts of nutters, fanatics and jerks out of the woodwork just as the government feared. The authorities might label the information as a hoax but one man, Chris Chapel thinks the impending doom story is not false. He kills his ex wife's family, lover and now has their children. Renko and Hicks need to put their differences aside and try to stop Chapel and save the kids.

The format of the series just does not work and this is only the second episode. A story arc of the planet's impending destruction with a murderous story of the week means this is no Edge of Darkness.
