Just wanted to commend Rachel Hilson on a great performance - she absolutely aced the mannerisms of Susan Kelechi Watson's Beth. They even aced the detailing by adding Watson's defining characteristic - her eye mole - which just added to the authenticy. Also, well done on This Is Us' casting crew, you've picked your cast for each of the generations carefully and it shows. Was an interesting change of storyline to see Beth's backstory, highly enjoyable.

This episode was nice because we finally got to learn more about Beth and her past. It was nice to see how she loved dancing and her relationship with her mother. Now she is back to dancing and maybe finally loving what she will do in life.
I needed Beth's story...

...for so many reasons. It resonated with me and was hands down my favorite episode of the season. As a black woman I could so relate to the pressure Beth felt. Awesome writing and acting. I so love Phylicia Rashad.

The journey of the Force

Beth is a strong character, and this describes her so aptly that it is impressive. Very good to understand that there isn't exactly blame when we talk about the path life takes or the traumas that keep us from doing certain things, and it's so beautiful this conversation she has with her mother. This is one of the episodes that made me cry the most. It's so real and true. And it talks about something that people are usually afraid of, the fact that she didn't follow her dream in the "right time" doesn't necessarily mean that she's behind or any other adjective that is given to people who don't stop living after they graduate from college. That journey is eternal is exactly what should be used to describe life. Beth's journey began before she even walked, as her father used to say, and no matter how much time she has spent in other directions, she is back.
Took Some Time

Some don't like Beth because she is a strong woman and has an expectation to be respected and recognized. Randall, being elected to city council in another city is really making life inflexible. I'm sure unless he engages in graft and uses his political life to his advantage, he isn't going to make much money. She hasn't found a job and when she decides to teach dance, I would imagine that is also barely paying the bills. So because her mother is having osteo problems, she and Zoe head off to visit her. She is a real force in their lives and hard to get along with. We also go back in time to where the family supported her, but needed her to make an absolute commitment. This is another view into the family foundation.
Worst Episode Ever

I think we understood Beth's thwarted desires to become a dancer in the first 2 minutes of the episode. Boring. And then to suffer through belabored scenes of her dancing as a girl, as a teen, mother doubting, father worrying was overkill. I went to bed early because I could not stand it anymore. I liked Beth; Now she is a burdensome brat undeserving of Randall's attention. She displayed this selfishness when she rejected Randall for his following through on his campaign.
Of course I fault neither the actors nor characters. The writers need to get back to the flawed 70's family viewers identify with. Most recently it has become an evening Soap Opera with no anchor in reality. Gorgeous girlfriend traveling to Vietnam with his sister-in-law cousin? Ridiculous. And she (can't remember her name) exhibits no sign of being remotely interested in documentaries except a question here and there to remind us that she is in fact interesting and working. Ha ha. My advice, go back to your original model. Bring Jack Pearson back.
