Ayer had friends that work in prisons, and they gave him information. Making sure the costumes are not over the top. The extensive tattoos - we even see see them getting "Skwad" inked on). The look of the Avocado Men came to David in a dream. He applied his military knowledge, and the experts helped a lot as well. They spend a month defining the characters.
