Plot isn't special, but the characters will lure you in
ninchenbienchen12 February 2020
After ending the series I kind of felt like I've watched a super long chinese version of Romeo and Juliet. So yes, the plot isn't new and the amount of times the female lead gets framed or is in danger is kind of ridiculous. BUT: that doesn't really matter. My heart won over my mind. I was CONSUMED by this series. The acting is great, the chemistry between several of the series' couples is indescribable and you go through every emotion possible: frustration, happiness, sadness, devastation... you name it, this series delivers.

Conclusion: is this a rationally good series? Nope, but if you need shows that are emotional as hell, then this is definitely the one for you.

Princess Wei Young for President
AppleEye2U30 March 2019
Great series! The story is about the kind princess of Northern Liang (Tiffany Tang). After her kingdom is destroyed, and her family murdered by the greedy Marshall of Northern Wei, she feels revengeful, turning into a powerful and cunning woman while assuming the identity of her murdered friend, Wei Young. The Princess walks willingly into the lion's den when she returns to the family home of Wei Young belonging to the same clan as the Marshall. This household is full of jealous, scheming people. Moreover she catches the eye of two princes/half brothers: the sunny favorite of the Emperor, Tuoba Jun (Luo Jin) and the cunning, ambitious Tuoba Yu (Vanness Wu), causing even more trouble for her. Will she survive the power struggle and keep her humanity as well?

This drama made me think of the popular k drama "Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo", but there was much more time to tell the story, to flesh out the characters. The great pro in comparison to k drama is that c drama has more (45) episodes.

The good: The Princess Wei Young is full of gorgeous looking siblings in rich surroundings, planning all kind of evil deeds against each other, playing a game of win or lose, but with a chance to come back again.

The bad: I know these scenes are quite common in Chinese drama, but I'm still not used to the unrealistic circus jumps or the fake horseback riding scenes, lmao.

Verdict: Still I give this drama an 8 out of 10. I couldn't wait for the subs and watched the entire show in Mandarin, it's that good.

Draws you in
alaningle711 June 2019
If you like your baddies super bad to the core and relentless then you will enjoy this. The Princess faces many hardships mainly due to other women who are jealous of her ability to make so many men fall in love with her. It sounds ridiculous but as you watch it and experience the hardships she endures you find yourself falling in love with her goodness. Luckily she has friends who adore her and a Prince who watches over her and she loves. She is betrayed by people she trusts and you wonder if she will ever be happy for more then a short time. Acting is superb and pacing of each programme is excellent and you tend to end up binge watching as it draws you in.

Love this series
pntr-4726225 February 2020
I loved the entire series! Beautiful costumes, beautiful scenery, beautiful music, handsome and beautiful actors, cliffhangers almost every episode. It had adventure, love, strategy, envy and tragedy. The recurring theme was people trying to get or destroy Weiyoung and how she fulfilled her grandmother's wish to Live On.

There are times when ya start to think, Really? Again?? But the story re-upped to more interesting parts. Some elements were not realistic, which is fine with me because I don't care for graphic fight scenes or explicit love scenes. It became comical to us that people could be run through with swords, and later say, "I'm fine" or kind of jump fly in battle. The story was mild enough to view with my pre-teen even with a few mature themes.

I have watched the whole series twice so far and may watch it again.

AMAZING

What else can you say about this love story, but compelling, I literally binged watched this for only a few days. I never have cried, laughed and was gripped to the edge of my seat. Loved the actors, scenes, cinematography was exquisite and the historical outfits. It was like reading an amazing novel and you could not put it down. I LOVED IT, so sad it is finished.

I enjoyed the cheeky interplay between several of the characters...love everything about the settings and that genre. What a bonus to be able to brush up on my Mandarin. Netflix rocks with the subtitles .

Hooked me on Chinese dramas
emmarose212 October 2020
This is the first Chinese drama I've watched and I'm hooked! The production is epic. The love story is utterly mesmerizing and the leads, Tiffany Tang and Luo Jin, are sensational in looks, acting chops and chemistry. The palace intrigues are riveting and the intelligence of Weiyong as she tries to prevail over her enemies' nefarious schemes is exciting to watch.

Unrealistic
asianaithylife19 June 2019
The amount of times our main character is in danger or gets framed then conviently is saved at the right moment is soooo unbelievable. She's also super smart and is desired by a ton of guys which is just so uhhhh. There's very minimal faults to her really. The drama really is an ongoing story of a girl who is in danger then gets saved then repeats that the whole time. I will say though that the drama gets better. Story is more interesting but really not that unique. Overall, it was an enjoyable watch.

Slow start but then pulled me in
leeberguk-3241331 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I had previously watched Word Of Honor, The Untamed, and Handsome Siblings on Netflix and was looking for a new show.

I started watching the Princess Weilong, but on episode 3 I gave it a break.

I picked it up again around a month later and I am glad I did.

Excellent characters, and a good story, with most episodes ending on a cliffhanger which made me binge watch the rest of the show.

I thought it was a fantastic show, my only minor complaint was how many times Weilong got framed. Must have been double figures. Surely the emperor would sense this after numerous times.

The writing got a little lazy as the show went on, and it could have benefitted from perhaps condensing some of the episodes.

Just finished episode 54 and for the most part it is soul crushing, especially after binge watching most of the episodes.

The main characters were great, and have to say that Vanness Wu played an excellent part as Tuoba Yu, as did Jin Han as Chiyun Nan. I can't help but feel sad for their characters.

Overall it left me feeling sad, but the consolation is that the two lead characters, Luo Jin and Tiffany Tang got together in real life and have a child!

THE PRINCESS WEIYOUNG: Revenge & Romance C-Drama
Jinxxa_Wolf27 July 2020
THE PRINCESS WEIYOUNG (Jinxiu Weiyang) was a very entertaining C-drama, with more soap (soap opera vibes) than I usually care for in my dramas, but still very beautiful to look at it and highly enjoyable with a very lovely cast. The story is interesting because it begins as a revenge drama and morphs into a romance drama with many twists and turns along the way.

While it took me a while to connect to the main heroine Princess Weiyoung also known as Li Wei Yang / Feng Xin'er (Tiffany Tang) she was a strong likable lead and when paired with Tuoba Jun, Prince Gaoyang, (Luo Jin) there was real chemistry. They evolved into a real power couple, even with many obstacles in their way.

I LOVED many of the side cast as well such as the cunning and calculating Tuoba Yu, Prince Nanan (Vanness Wu), the adorable and deadly Li Changru (Mao Xiaotong), the loyal and devoted Li Minde (Liang Zhenlun), the quirky and daring Tuoba Di, Ninth Princess (Chen Yuqi), the adorable and loyal Bai Zhi (Mu Le'en), the loyal bodyguard Jun Tao (Wang Yanzhi) and so many others. There were so many great characters in this show.

Overall, Princess Weiyoung was a very enjoyable ride, even with the intense melodrama and outrageous plot twists. Very memorable.

Loved this show but don't understand why they try and pass girls as men. Breast are hard to hide and voices are feminine... good family show.

Entertaining
cheer8816 April 2020
Although I watched fair amount of period soap operas from South Korea before. This one from China still drew my attention. It has extravaganza customs with elaborate scenes like those others in the same genera. Even with similar implausible plots deployed into every episode, it is entertaining at least.

This kind of TV series has huge and wide ranges of audiences in Asia regardless they rarely follow historical facts. I used to enjoy watching them until I discovered they pretty much sharing same scenario and lost my interests. It is gripping with complicate however repetitive stories in every episode. There always has a main character who suffered from the past destruction of her or his family and must take back the honer with revenges. The plots usually limit to those murderous bloodbath, triangle romances, betrayals, and calculating schemes. However, they entice audiences with multiple layers of stories. You will hardly be bore by unless you watched too many like I did and feel same storylines just repeated themselves.

You may see same kind of TV series in different languages. But they are always compelling.

A WASTE OF TIME
hamishbong1 January 2021
It has to be one of the worst series I have ever encountered... too many plots and they are all too lame... its bloody painful to watch! Most to the time the main female protagonist is an idiot in disguise as a clever girl, An the male protagonist is just blur... No one is bright in this series is bright not even the emperor. Lines and scenes and plots lifted straight out of Langya Bang. Must have spent lots of money on the looks but nothing on the substance. Come on! You can do better than that! I have seen the great! Langya Bang/Nirvana In Fire. Don;t tell me, Langya Bang is the only one to watch and I can ignore all the rest of China's TV dramas???? The whole series is just too stupid for words. I normally don't care to write reviews, but this is one I just can't ignore... A basket of rotten eggs for the Writer.

Awesome story, great acting, costumes, sets were magnificent.
I have written a script and would love at any time for my movie to look like that.

It's in the early 1500 in Tien Shan, Heaven Mountains.

This movie is one of my favorites. It's too bad it's not dubbed in English. I had to stop and read to be able to catch up with the story.

Watching it for the second time and loving it.

Couldn't stop watching
magnoliacream26 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If this were a book, I would call this a page-turner. The adventures of Feng Xin'er/Li Weiyoung (Tiffany Tang), her vow to avenge the tragedy that befell her family, her love story with Prince Tuoba Jun (Luo Jin), the palace intrigues and conspiracies and how, through sheer wit, she was able to extricate herself from constantly being framed, kept me glued to the TV.

I was ready to give this a 10/10 except that I reserve that rating only for fairy-tale endings. Although the ending was not thoroughly tragic, and I know viewers who were not bothered by it at all, I had expected more, considering the difficulties the lead characters had to go through to be together.

This is a beautiful show
bannanabread6 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Although this show is wildly far-fetched it added such a great amount of realism in the emotions of the characters. As I won't spoil the show I will let you know that this is the first movie or show that has been able to make me cry. This show will catch your attention right from the beginning and have you binge-watch the rest of the show. This is also the first show I have seen that had a sad ending in a Chinese drama that I have watched. While the ending was sad and I wished it didn't end the way it did I am glad they ended it with something different and gave a somewhat realistic ending which I enjoyed. I promise if you are on the fence if you should watch this or not you definitely Should especially if you enjoy romantic action movies.

Addictive yet unsatisfying
calistaenergy8 May 2023
This could be called the story of job. This woman suffers for most of the 54 episodes. The show loves to ground her to dust under everyone's feet. The problem is, Weiyoung never got justice. It was never satisfying and she never got a moment to see the other person realizing they lost to her.

The set-ups were ridiculous and it was predictable. I mean, the moment Weiyoung seemed happy, you knew something god awful was about to happen, without fail.

I couldn't stop watching and it constantly drove me crazy. The ending was a let down. The whole show is about pain and suffering. It's like Ashes of Love, it just isn't any fun to watch. I would never rewatch those shows.

Since when is this love story where the main lovers suffer constantly such a popular thing. Why make this? I'm just so thankful it's over and I can forget it.

So many things were so laughable and only served to make fake emotions. Drives me crazy. I wish Weiyoung had gotten a better story. The writers did her dirty as most of the characters in the story. The evil people never really got their deserts either. Most of them could be evil to the end. Oh well.

Tuo Ba Yu is the highlight
lrhwin13 April 2020
I thoroughly enjoyed the show, but I think the character of Tuo Ba Yu is absolutely the highlight, even overshadowed the male lead. This is an cunning and ambitious man who could sacrifice anyone in the world to achieve his goal, except for one woman. Even he is a villain, I can't help being intrigued and care about this character. The actor did a fantastic job playing this role!

A Gripping Story
phillipjbrown31 December 2020
Despite 54 episodes I felt gripped by the story and couln't wait to see what happened next. The costumes and production vlues were outstanding. The baddies were really bad but many had understandble motivations. The acting was variable with Yan Tang for instance looking the part but ot one of the greatest actresses. But like the others she gave it her best.Hsin Ai Lee asLi Changle and Xiaotong Mao asLi Changru were really good and Vanness Wu as the crack necking Tuoba Yu was brilliant with a nost extroadinary hair style.

The plot twisted and turned in every episode and the the coincidencies and last minute saves all added to it. The end was Shakespearean but satisfying, A really good watch

Exquisite
Bibiliography12 August 2022
Look, this series is top-notch, from the screenplay to the actors and the cinematography. Everything was *chef's kiss*. Yes, at times, it was a bit slow but it never failed to entertain or keep me on tenterhooks. If you want a revenge story that ramps up the tension, then this is the one for you.

Cinderella meets Romeo and Juliet
araich88947 November 2022
I'm an American who did not know an ounce of Chinese (Mandarin?). Sorry if I don't know the proper language of which this tv series was spoken in, but I watched in closed caption. I LOVED this how. I'm not sure how I even turned to a show that wasn't in English, but Im so happy I did. Every single character was "spot on" with their acting. Phenomenal chemistry! The hatred, love, lust and disregard they had for one another were top notch. I binged it in a week. Each day I got off work, I couldn't wait to get home to see what happened. The best part, was after it was over, I found out that Tuoba Jun and Li Weiyoung are married in real life. This is a must see! Looking for more to watch from this creator.
