Actually like Big Mac a good deal on the most part as a supporting character, and was interested to see how he would fare as a lead. Was a bit nervous on first rewatch of "Hard to Say Anything" after hearing and seeing that it bore similarities to Season 2's "Hearts and Hooves Day", don't hate that episode as much as many episodes but can totally understand why it's considered one of the show's worst (personally think there's worse though).
"Hard to Say Anything" is a long way from being one of the best episodes of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' or of Season 7. There are also as said worse episodes of the show and while it's in the lower half when ranking the season it is not one of the very worst. Bang in the middle if anything. "Hard to Say Anything" to me was not a bad episode on first viewing and still isn't, but there was potential for it to be a good deal more than it turned out.
There are many good things with "Hard to Say Anything". The animation as to be expected is very colourful and rich in background detail. The character designs show once again how that aspect has become more polished over the years. The music is full of quirky character and also atmosphere. The song is great and catchy, especially earlu on. Much of the characterisation is great, Sugar Belle is very cute and it is great for Big Mac, though he is better as a supporting character, to be more talkative while still being amusing and lovable. The chemistry is sweet.
Voice acting is very good, Rebecca Shoichet being one of the better examples and Madeleine Peters is perfect as Scootaloo, if not mind blowing amazing. A good deal of the humour hits and there is some witty dialogue, such as Scootaloo's "really that line worked". Scootaloo is likeable and avoids being bland or cutesy. The story has enough charm and energy.
On the other hand, not all the humour hits with too much of it being centered around Feather Bangs. The swooning ladies running gag was a very old joke well before this episode was made and is overused here. Feather Bangs has fun moments but is little more than a very familiar plot device.
Although the story generally is compelling and well delivered, it is also very predictable and can feel very padded from the content being on the thin side.
Concluding, pretty decent. 6/10.
