Madonna‘s had an impressive array of No. 1 songs, but she’s also had something rarer: an impressive array of No. 2 songs. Some of her defining hits just missed the top spot. Here’s a nostalgic look back at some of the Queen Pop’s best musical (and music video) moments.
1. ‘Material Girl’
Considering “Material Girl”‘s great new wave beat and iconic music video inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, it would have been a hit regardless of its lyrics. The song is a cute satire of Reagan-era values that’s light enough to be taken at face value. Because some listeners did take it at face value, the song has been used to paint Madonna as shallow and greedy.
The track hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. While the charts are never fair, that placement feels like a real insult. After all, what song...

Someone get a bible and swear Michael Shannon into office because he’s about to get political for Netflix’s forthcoming series Death By Lightning. Reports indicate that Shannon is playing the assassinated President James A. Garfield opposite his killer, Charles Guiteau, portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, for a series written and created by Mike Makowsky.
Based on the novel Destiny Of The Republic by Candice Millard, Death By Lightning revolves around the unique circumstances behind the assassination of James Garfield, the reluctant 20th president of the United States of America. In a bizarre twist, Charles Guiteau shot and killed Garfield at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington. While the wound was not fatal, an infection from the grievous injury eventually killed Garfield on September 19, 1881. THR reports that Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) is attached to star in The Memory Police, an adaptation of the acclaimed science fiction novel by Yoko Ogawa.

The moviemaking business is alive and well, and somehow giving several talents the greenlight in a 24-hour span. Ranked in order of interest, from best to good-enough:
The Hollywood Reporter reports (from Hollywood) that Lily Gladstone and Martin Scorsese will reunite via Charlie Kaufman: the latter has written The Memory Police, an adaptation of Yoko Ogawa’s acclaimed sci-fi novel which the Best Actress nominee will lead and Scorsese is executive-producing. Reed Morano (I Think We’re Alone Now) is taking directing duties on the film, somehow both Kafkaesque and Orwellian, as the official synopsis suggests:
On an unnamed island, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses. . . . Most of the inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few able to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering 10 Cloverfield Lane was Written and Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
What do you get when Paramount Pictures has a film that comes out of nowhere back in 2008, on a budget of 25 million dollars, grossing a total worldwide haul of 172 million dollars? Still having trouble? Ok, what about a newly crafted franchise that puts much-needed life and glory back into the monster genre? The answer is simple, a sequel to that film, eight years later called 10 Cloverfield Lane (watch it Here). Dan Trachtenberg’s directorial debut, 10 Cloverfield Lane was the highly anticipated sequel to Matt Reeve’s found footage monster flick Cloverfield. 10 Cloverfield Lane takes the massive scope of Cloverfield and condenses it into an intimate tale of survival and dread. But the...

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Songs can have the power to make or break a show just from their inclusion in a scene, but shows also have the power to reinvigorate songs because of their inclusion. Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (Make A Deal With God)” topped the charts because of its incorporation into the powerful fourth episode “Dear Billy” in Stranger Things. More recently, Linda Ronstadt’s “Long Long Time” was given new life after being used to tell the love story between Bill and Frank in the emotional third episode of The Last of Us. Scenes are sometimes only as compelling as the songs that accompany them. Get ready to create a new playlist because here are seven more of the best uses of songs in television shows that have elevated the narrative and contributed to their popularity in the charts and on social media. “I Think We’re Alone Now” by...

From the very beginning of the show's inception, music has always played a vital role in "The Umbrella Academy." Some of the show's most powerful moments, like the full house season 1 dance to "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany or the massive fight sequence in season 2 set to the Backstreet Boys' "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" have become fan favorites, due to the oftentimes anachronistic usage. Hell, Klaus spends most of season 2 prophesying to his cultlike followers by quoting lines of songs that had yet to be written — in that timeline, at least. Season 3 of the hit dysfunctional...

New Kids on the Block released a video for their new song “Bring Back the Time” last week that’s perhaps the most potent expression of nostalgia we’ve ever seen. It’s the past in its purest, most uncut form, like it was created in Walter White’s secret basement laboratory and injected directly into the veins of their fans.
The video, which doubles as a commercial for the group’s upcoming Mixtape Tour, features Rick Astley, Salt-n-Pepa, and En Vogue (who are all on the tour) re-creating classic...

Ever since last season’s cliffhanger dropped, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the day when Maeve finally discovers the truth about Otis’ heartfelt voicemail. Unfortunately, she’s still in the dark in Sex Education‘s Season 3 premiere. But truth be told, we’ve got some mega hot goss to tackle first: Otis is still hooking up with Ruby Matthews?!
In the premiere’s first few sex-crazed seconds (all eight episodes are now available on Netflix for your bingeing… um, pleasure), we see heaps of Moordale students gettin’ it on montage-style, including Otis, who’s working his magic inside a parked...

The Spicy Six were revealed during Episode 7 of “The Masked Singer” last week and the Black Swan is the last woman standing. This marks the first time in the history of the series that just one female has remained at this point in the competition. The feathered diva will face off against Chameleon, Piglet, Robopine, Russian Dolls and Yeti for the Golden Mask trophy.

The Super 8 hit the stage in a two-hour episode of “The Masked Singer” on Wednesday night before a pair mystery performers were eliminated from the reality TV competition. First Grammy winner Bobby Brown was revealed as the Crab and then Daytime Emmy winner Tamera Mowry-Housely was unmasked as the Seashell. It wasn’t a very good day at the beach! Tamera’s final performance was “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 5 Episode 7 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired April 21 on Fox.
Too hot to handle, too cold to hold, Bobby Brown was the next celebrity to be eliminated on Wednesday night’s edition of “The Masked Singer,” followed immediately by “Sister, Sister” star Tamera Mowry. It was a tough night for the beach, as Brown had been disguised as the Crab, while Mowry was dressed as the Seashell.
That’s right, it was a double elimination evening, part of a two-hour extravaganza that saw the “Super 8” contestants whittled down to just six. Also, viewers got more of a glimpse of the mysterious “Cluedle Doo,” a masked star who is sharing additional clues behind the scenes for viewers — and, for the first time, the panelists on set.
For the Crab, Ken Jeong and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg got it right with Brown.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.”)
The fifth season of “The Masked Singer” aired its special two-hour Super 8 episode Wednesday, bringing together the remaining contestants from Groups A and B for the first time and ending with two unmaskings.
The supersized episode featured performances by Russian Doll(s), Seashell, Robopine (f.k.a. Porcupine), Yeti, Chameleon, Black Swan, Piglet and Crab. Each of those eight sang their little hearts out for host Nick Cannon, panelists Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger and guest panelist Rita Wilson. Then, it was time for the judges and at-home audience to cast their votes for their favorite, and in doing so, select which two competitors would not move on to the Spicy Six round.
They ended up cutting Crab and Seashell.

Following last year's news that Macon Blair (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) will write and direct a reboot of the cult classic Troma movie The Toxic Avenger, The Hollywood Reporter now reveals that Peter Dinklage will star in the film.
According to THR, the new Toxic Avenger is "described as a contemporary reimagining that will subvert the superhero genre à la Deadpool (2016)."
Troma Entertainment's Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, who co-directed the original Toxic Avenger, will serve as executive producers on the reboot.
Released in 1984, the original Toxic Avenger follows bullied janitor Melvin Ferd, who falls into toxic waste after being pursued by his tormentors, only to rise from certain death and transform into a disfigured defender of Tromaville. The film was followed by three sequels, a ’90s cartoon show, a stage musical, and a Marvel comic book series.

Break out the leg warmers because it’s ’80s Night on “Dancing with the Stars” and there’ll be a lot of… tangos?
Four of the top 12 couples are tasked with tangos this week, so prepare for lots of side steps. Kaitlyn Bristowe is one of the four, which is a good thing since, like Derek Hough pointed out last week, it’s been getting too same-y with her pretty but similar lyrical routines the past couple of weeks.
Two dances will make their season debuts: jazz, which is assigned to three couples, and contemporary, which Johnny Weir got. And if you’ve seen any of his figure skating routines, you know he will nail this. Also, it’s to “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” so this is going to be a moment.

There’s little false advertising to “Love, Guaranteed,” a romantic comedy about true love and the seemingly overblown promises of online dating. The shared fate of Susan Whitaker and Nick Evans — played by Rachel Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. — is all but assured by director Mark Steven Johnson’s pretty much by-the-numbers take. The question isn’t “Will they wind up together?” It’s more of a “how they will wind up together” proposition. Even with some nicely understated moments from the leads, the Netflix film is decidedly slight, easy-on-the-noggin entertainment.
Susan Whitaker has her own shingle as an attorney. Nick is a physical therapist at a rehab center. How others feel about each of them — her employees, his patients — attests to the fact they are decent people. When Nick first seeks out Susan’s services for a lawsuit, she has her doubts. The virtual TCA panel for The Umbrella Academy kicked off with the opening battlefield scene from the sophomore season which debuted July 31 on Netflix. The new season finds our favorite dysfunctional family of superheroes in Dallas during the ’60s. After they take down some soldiers with their superpowers, Five (Aidan Gallagher) teleports out of there as the rest of the family looks up at a mushroom cloud — it’s a great way to start a second season.
On Tuesday, after some technical issues, showrunner and Executive Producer Steve Blackman talked about the new season alongside Gallagher as well as his Umbrella Academy siblings Ellen Page (Vanya), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), David Castañeda (Diego) and Justin H. Min (Ben).
For season two, Blackwell said they they had the opportunity to explore new issues about racial identity and sexuality. He added, that the show takes on serious stories even though it takes place in a heightened world.

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy can’t be a cheap show to make. This superhero story is based on an ambitious, colorful comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá and as such it features big action setpieces, depictions of superpowers, and even a talking chimp or two.
Still it’s hard to imagine any portion of The Umbrella Academy’s budget is larger than the music clearance department. The series features a moody score from Jeff Russo but also a truly stunning amount of pop hits. Given how the first season of The Umbrella Academy ends with a monumental cliffhanger, it would be criminally unfair for Netflix not to renew the sci-fi series for a second season, right? Luckily the streaming platform announced the fate of the star-studded show, which was adapted from the Dark Horse Comics title of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, on April 2 - season two is officially happening! And on May 18, the streamer dropped the official release date of July 31 with a fitting video of the cast dancing along to Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now." They always know what people want to see!
