FX is adapting “The Sparrow,” based on Mary Doria Russell’s 1996 book of the same name.
Scott Frank, who co-created the Netflix hit “The Queen’s Gambit,” is writing all of the episodes, with Johan Renck attached to direct.
“The Sparrow” is the prequel novel to Russell’s “Children of God,” which was published in 1998.
Here is the logline for the FX adaptation:
“The Sparrow” follows a band of Jesuit priests and scientists, led by linguist Father Emilio Sandoz, who makes first contact with extraterrestrial life. The Vatican backs a secret trip to the distant planet with the purpose of proving the existence of God throughout the universe. Things don’t quite go as planned and the trip ends in disaster. Father Sandoz, the only survivor, returns to earth broken both physically and mentally where the Vatican holds an inquiry into the now scandalous misadventure. Based on the visionary 1996 novel by Mary Doria Russell,...

When we think of cults, we tend to picture charismatic leaders with legions of brainwashed followers, eager to devote their lives to the group’s mission. But in reality, most of us, at some point in our lives, have been seekers — open to discovering new ways of life and paths to enlightenment — and celebrities are no exception. Here are a few examples of some who were, at some point, either members of cults or fringe groups, or have some association with them.

“People Magazine Investigates: Cults” returns for a sophomore season on June 3 on Investigation Discovery.
Each episode follows one infamous cult from the time of its creation, and tracks leaders as well as survivors. A team of People’s true-crime staff talks to survivors who escaped and are attempting to rebuild their lives after submerging themselves into cult-like organizations.
“The stories told from those who have escaped from these cults are incredibly harrowing – truly, stranger than fiction – which is why they both captivate and so intrigue our viewers,” said Henry Schleiff, group president of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America, in a prepared statement. “ID continues our extremely successful partnership with People for this new season, as they bring their expert reporting to our viewers on these secret societies that so often seek to dominate and control their innocent followers.”

No details about his death were immediately available. The band’s founding drummer Mick Fleetwood acknowledged Kirwan’s passing in a statement for the group on his Facebook page Friday evening.
“Danny was a huge force in our early years,” Fleetwood wrote. “His love for the blues led him to being asked to join Fleetwood Mac in 1968, where he made his musical home for many years.
“Danny’s true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as a part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac…Thank you, Danny Kirwan. You will forever be missed!”

Press-loathing actor Joaquin Phoenix, star of Lynne Ramsey’s “You Were Never Really Here,” is still in recovery. Yes, from alcohol back in the day, but also from that disastrous period when he and then-brother-in-law Casey Affleck “thought it was funny,” as he told NPR’s Terry Gross, to film the bizarre 2010 mockumentary “I’m Still Here.” Throughout filming, Phoenix remained in (scripted) character as a strangely unhinged version of himself, overweight, hirsute, and out of control, including his 2009 “Late Show with David Letterman” appearance where he announced his acting retirement — in order to be a hip-hop artist.
The movie underscored Phoenix’s ambivalent relationship to his own celebrity and his lack of concern for public perceptions. However, it turned out that he may have overstated his case. Phoenix had no idea how much the film would impact his ability to get work. (HIs director is still dealing with the...
