The movie boasts an ensemble cast led by breakout performances from Bobbi Salvör Menuez (“Under the Silver Lake”) and Marianne Rendón (“Charlie Says”).
The producers are billing Schamus’s film as a modern twist on the buddy comedy, with this one told from a queer and trans perspective. It comes as filmmakers are offering fresh takes on queer stories.
“Summer Solstice” world premiered at Provincetown Film Festival and then went on to screen at New York’s LGBTQ+ film festival NewFest, with additional selections at Mill Valley Film Festival, Woodstock Film Festival and Deauville American Film Festival. A24 is a studio that has built up a good name over the last decade and change in Hollywood. It's a name that means something to moviegoers, and that's no small thing. But as the studio looks to compete in an increasingly volatile Hollywood landscape, minor theatrical successes like "Priscilla" and disastrous flops such as "Under the Silver Lake" aren't going to cut it anymore. So, the studio is going bigger and making its biggest bet ever with Alex Garland's "Civil War." The question is, can this politically-charged, unconventional war film break through like a more conventional blockbuster?
Given that Garland's latest carries a $50 million budget, A24 is certainly hoping so. The good news is that the initial numbers suggest that this one will be a winner, at least in the early going. "Civil War" is eyeing an opening between $18 and $24 million when it arrives next weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For those who have been fans since his pre-It Follows breakout with The Myth of the American Sleepover, it was disappointing to see director David Robert Mitchell land in director’s jail after the debacle of Under the Silver Lake. The brilliantly layered neo-noir premiered in competition at Cannes Film Festival in 2018 (where we were on the right side of history), then delayed by A24 a handful of times only to quietly launch in theaters nearly a year later, followed by a digital release a mere few days following that, wrapping up with a domestic gross of less than $50,000. After six long years of trying to get another film off the ground, the director has finally begun production on his next feature in Atlanta.

Back in 2012, Maisy Stella and her older sister Lennon Stella went viral with their YouTube cover of the Robyn song “Call Your Girlfriend.” Soon after, the sisters landed acting roles on the TV series Nashville (pictured above), where their musical performances continued as they appeared on 119 episodes of the show. Nashville wrapped up back in 2018, and six years later Maisy Stella returned to the acting world with her first film, the comedy My Old Ass, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and sees Stella sharing the screen with Aubrey Plaza (they’re pictured together below). Amazon MGM Studios will be giving My Old Ass a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on August 2nd – and while we wait for that, Variety reports that Stella has landed her second film role. Maisy Stella has joined Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor in It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s mystery IMAX thrill ride, Flowervale Street.
Here’s a story that caught our attention this morning, given that it’s added a rising star to a project featuring an ensemble of supremely talented actors who have a knack for attaching themselves to interesting projects.
We’ve heard stories for a while now that David Robert Mitchell, the director of It Follows and Under The Silver Lake is making another film, itself a notable bit of news given that he’s only made three films since 2010’s The Myth Of The American Sleepover, his ultra low-budget debut. Having such a short filmography that boasts two critically-lauded films on it means that Mitchell’s return to directing (for the first time since 2018’s Under The Silver Lake) was always going to generate excitement.
Then there’s that cast to consider.

Sydney Sweeney has had a busy few months as she rises to new levels of stardom. After the mammoth success of her romantic comedy with Top Gun: Maverick’s Glenn Powell called Anyone But You, the actress starred in the meme-bank Sony film Madame Web. The actress is now gearing up for the release of her first production, the horror film Immaculate.
Sweeney reportedly first came across the script for the film when she auditioned for it way before her fame. Though the project did not take off, the script of the film reportedly kept spinning her head, and when she got the chance to produce her own film, she decided to contact the screenwriter. While there were some changes from the original script, Sweeney mentioned that her performance in one particular scene in the film was the result of her reaction to a real-life incident.

Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman is on the way, and you can get your first look right here.
Chris Pine’s Poolman is set to release next month courtesy of Vertical in the US and Signature Entertainment here in the UK. Poolman marks Pine’s directorial debut and is said to be an LA-based mystery comedy which to our mind, brings forth notes of The Big Lebowski or Under The Silver Lake.
Whether Poolman can hit these highs remains to be seen, although the film did find itself coming under some fire when it released at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Still, we won’t be judging it until we’ve seen it with our own eyes and the opportunity to do that will soon be arising. The film releases on the 10th of May in the US although here in the UK, Signature haven’t yet dated its release.

When it comes to storytelling, it’s often said that the journey matters more than the destination, and that’s why I think ergodic fiction is so satisfying to read. Exemplified by narrative puzzles like Ryan Hughes’ Xx and Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves, these intricately crafted tales are defined by an intentional difficulty in actually figuring out what’s going on in the story – effectively making the reading itself a part of the creative process.
Unfortunately, when it comes to movies, studio expectations mean that ergodic filmmaking isn’t exactly a hot commodity, with most productions preferring to bet on conventional screenplays with easily understandable stories rather than anything that might turn off potential moviegoers. This isn’t always the case, however, and a great example of a filmmaker attempting to use ergodic storytelling elements on the big screen is David Robert Mitchell’s underrated conspiracy thriller,...

It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s 80s-set “IMAX thrill-ride” for Bad Robot is shrouded in secrecy. So could Flowervale Street be another Cloverfield spin-off? We look at the possible clues.
We’ve been following the slightly under-the-radar progress of Flowervale Street for some time now. An upcoming film from It Follows and Under The Silver Lake director David Robert Mitchell, it has been shrouded in secrecy for several months, with even that title currently in question.
As more details about the project have emerged, though, we’ve began to wonder: could it be another film in the Cloverfield series? If so, this would place it in a series that has so far included the 2008 original and the spin-offs 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018).
Let’s take a quick look at the clues we currently have to hand.

Ewan McGregor has joined Anne Hathaway in It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s mystery 80s-set dinosaur film, seemingly called Flowervale Street.
There’s an awful lot we don’t know about Flowervale Street, the upcoming film from It Follows and Under The Silver Lake director David Robert Mitchell. Even that title has a bit of a question mark hovering around it – on IMDb, the project’s simply billed as Untitled Anne Hathaway & Robert Mitchell Film, largely because it stars Anne Hathaway.
Several outlets, including World of Reel, have stated that its title is Flowervale Street, though, so that’s what we’ll go with for now.
According to Deadline, Ewan McGregor is the latest high-profile addition to the cast, and interestingly, the Hollywood outlet doesn’t mention the film’s title, either. Even its logline is still being kept secret, though Deadline echoes earlier reports that it’ll be a ‘thrill-ride’ shot on IMAX.

At the time, reports suggested that the sequel would begin filming in 2024 – but it now sounds as though Mitchell is going to get started on an entirely separate project first. Called Flowervale Street, it’s described as “a mystery thriller with dinosaurs set in the 80s” akin to A Quiet Place, and will star Anne Hathaway.
Word of the film got around in March 2023, when Hollywood trade outlets reported that Mitchell had partnered with JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros Pictures to make a “thrill ride” shot in IMAX. Mitchell has written the script himself,...

Exclusive: Topher Grace (That ’90s Show) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey: A New Era) have been tapped for roles opposite Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg in Flight Risk, the suspense thriller that Mel Gibson is helming for Lionsgate. The project marks Gibson’s first outing behind the camera since the Academy Award-nominated war drama Hacksaw Ridge for the same studio, as we previously reported.
In the suspense thriller, Wahlberg plays a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (Dockery), who’s been tasked with accompanying a fugitive (Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.
Pic is based on the 2020 Black List script by Jared Rosenberg. Davis Entertainment is producing alongside Gibson and Bruce Davey through their Icon Productions.

A24 has found a new home at Warner Bros. Discovery. The company behind hit films such as "Everything Everywhere All at Once" has inked a multiyear deal with Wbd that will bring the company's theatrical films exclusively to the company's streaming outlets and premium cable networks. This includes HBO and Cinemax, as well as the Max streaming service. The deal will include recent and upcoming releases such as "Priscilla" and "The Iron Claw," and it will also see a vast number of titles from A24's library making their way to Wbd outlets.
The new deal means that A24 films will be exclusive to HBO, Cinemax, and Max following their theatrical release and VOD release. Basically, those who are waiting to stream A24's next buzzy hit will need to go to one of those three places. Laura Citarella’s lengthy romantic conundrum refuses to tie up its many loose ends but her film-making language ensures that cult status beckons
Laura Citarella’s movie is a coolly unhurried four hours-plus, split into two parts of around two hours each; it is from the same producer, in fact, as Argentinian auteur Mariano Llinás’s legendary 13-and-a-half hour film La Flor. Compared with that, Trenque Lauquen – whose title means “round lake” and is a city in Buenos Aires province – is a mere cine-haiku; but it is still a domestic epic, a giant puzzle, a whopping solutionless mystery and a meandering shaggy dog story with a hint of Borges or As Byatt’s Possession. And Citarella might have mixed these influences with Lynch or even David Robert Mitchell’s divisive noir Under the Silver Lake. Yet for all its deadpan charm, there is something here which I couldn’t quite make friends with,...

Academy Award-winning producer of “Moonlight” Adele Romanski teased upcoming projects at Poland’s American Film Festival, including Barry Jenkins’ “Mufasa: The Lion King.”
“I think anything new is scary and scary is exciting. I run towards that. What we saw was an opportunity to work with new tools, to explore the inside of a different medium and put our own stamp on it,” she said during a masterclass.
Romanski also worked on Jodie Foster-starring “True Detective: Night Country,” set to premiere in January.
“Issa López, who is the showrunner and directed all six episodes, had a take on it that felt like [the show] was going back to the first season, one that people really responded to, and at the same time it was reinventing itself.”
American producer and co-founder of Pastel, also behind Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun,” received the coveted Indie Star Award at the fest.
“I felt so displaced after the Oscars for ‘Moonlight.

Ever get that feeling that something's creeping up right behind you? Eh, don't worry about it, I'm sure it's nothing. Nothing, that is, except the news that one of the freakiest horror movies ever made is about to get a long-awaited sequel.
Back in 2015, writer/director David Robert Mitchell unleashed the tense and quietly terrifying "It Follows" upon unsuspecting viewers. Critics hailed it as an instant classic while audiences ate it up and asked for seconds, helping the very responsibly-budgeted horror flick make more than 20 times its cost during its theatrical run. It was, by all reasonable metrics, an unmitigated success and the unofficial beginning of star Maika Monroe's ascension to genuine scream queen territory. Now, almost a decade later, indie-friendly studio Neon is throwing their distribution and production muscle behind a sequel, titled "They Follow."

A major breakout after his debut feature The Myth of the American Sleepover, David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows was a horror sensation, striking a nerve upon its 2014 release. In the years to follow, the director crafted the severely overlooked Under the Silver Lake and has been attached to a few other projects. While it looks like his mysterious Warner Bros./Bad Robot IMAX-shot movie starring Anne Hathaway has been delayed due to the strike, he’s now returning with a sequel to his horror hit.
Neon announced today they will produce They Follow, which will feature the return of Maika Monroe as Jay Height, and production will commence in 2024. While there are no plot details on the sequel yet, the first film followed Monroe’s character as a young woman who, after having sex with her boyfriend for the first time, learns she will now be hunted by a mysterious entity.

David Robert Mitchell is finally making his long-awaited followup to horror hit It Follows. Mitchell is reteaming with star Maika Monroe on They Follow, with Tom Quinn’s Neon introducing the package to buyers at AFM this week.
They Follow will once again star Monroe as Jay Height, whom audiences met in the 2014 film as a young woman who, after having sex with her boyfriend for the first time, learns she will now be hunted by a mysterious entity. The only way to temporarily stave off death is to pass on the curse to someone else, who will become next on the list followed by the entity.
The film grossed $21.9 million globally on a budget of around $1 million. Over the years, talent behind It Follows has discussed a sequel, with Neon’s Quinn suggesting in 2015 it could involve people turning the tables on the entity and following it to its source.

I’m a fan of Chris Pine: the early Shatner-smooth charisma, the powerful chops he’s displayed in movies like “Hell or High Water,” the authoritative snap of his performance as the cult-leader heavy in “Don’t Worry Darling.” So I take no vicious pleasure in saying that “Poolman,” a movie that Pine co-wrote, directed, and stars in, is not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season but would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out. Okay, maybe I’m taking a bit of vicious pleasure in saying that, since I had to sit through the goddamn thing. At the Toronto Film Festival showing I attended, there were a lot of walkouts.
“Poolman,” to the extent that you can discern the ragged crayon scrawl of a design in it, wants to be one of those daffy, rambling, sick-soul-of-Los-Angeles detective noir comedies,...

The unholy union of rock music and horror is alive and well in Art of a Hit, a psychological horror movie set to begin production soon according to Deadline.
Formerly titled Excelsis, Art of a Hit is set in 2003 and “follows a bygone rock band as they journey to a 1000-year-old French chateau to record with a reclusive super-producer in hopes of rebooting their career. But as tensions rise and tempers flare, they realize they are up against more than just the pressure to succeed.”
Deadline reports that “Indie rock pioneer Adam Lasus is music directing the ’90s alternative-heavy soundtrack alongside music supervisor Linda Cohen (Licorice Pizza).”
That exciting tidbit not only highlights that music will be prominent to this rock horror story, but it’s 2003 eschews the conventional ’80s hair metal movement frequently explored in this niche subgenre. I suppose the real question at this point is just how...

“Poolman,” Chris Pine’s directorial debut that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a pastiche of Los Angeles past and present. It’s a film noirlike “Chinatown” and “L.A. Confidential,” but its characters are the New Age-y, socially conscious, showbiz-adjacent type. The film was supposedly the first to be screened on 35mm at TIFF in years, only to be projected in Dcp due to an unspecified technical issue.

The Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing with a bevy of titles competing both for global distribution and awards prestige. The festival has had its share of lumps in the last month, losing their 28-year-sponsor, Bell Telephone, back in August, as well as being enmeshed in the on-going SAG-AFTRA/WGA duel strike. It is that strike that is the most insurmountable goal for the event, as actors and writers are unable to attend and promote their films, though some have with a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.
And while the movie landscape is looking different, with movies switching release dates (in the wake of both the strike and Taylor Swift’s Eras tour), this year’s TIFF is showcasing what amazing movies are still being made. Here are 25 of the hottest titles to be excited for at this year’s TIFF.

Riley Keough nearly put Andrew Garfield in the hospital during filming ‘Under the Lake’ in 2018 because she had a peanut cereal bar before a kissing scene.
Riley Keough ate a granola bar containing peanuts before a kissing scene with Andrew Garfield, which unintentionally led to the cancellation of a project she was working on.
The “Spiderman” actor, with whom she co-starred in 2018’s “Under the Silver Lake,” said she was unaware of his peanut allergy and that the circumstance was “actually very stressful.”
Riley brought something to the set during production that may have put her co-star at grave risk. In fact, during a conversation, the interpreter related a potentially fatal anecdote that happened while the movie was being filmed: Unaware of her colleague’s severe peanut allergy, the star had chosen to eat a small snack that contained peanuts just before filming a scene in which he was supposed to kiss the actor.

And the makeup lady was like, ‘Are there peanuts in that?’ And I was like, ‘I think. I don’t know.’ She ran away and got a producer who was a friend of mine.”
