Sex & Nudity

  • A girl tries to take revenge on her brother, but accidentally mistakes another man for him. She comes up behind him and grabs his backside, teasing him all the while. Then he turns around and she is horrified to see he is not her brother. She screams, crossing her arms across her chest as if he had been the one who had grabbed her. He is completely dumbfounded, yet rumors spread through the onlooking crowd about him assaulting her. Overall, the scene is very comical.
  • The Hwarang are sometimes seeing showering together, but nothing is shown.
  • A girl refers to a male character as 'Master Pervert'. He is always talking about the two of them 'sleeping together' in the past, when in reality, he had simply dozed off to her storytelling. At one point, he advanced on her and forcibly kisses her until she eventually knocks him away.

Violence & Gore

  • Combat with swords, bows and arrows, spears, and knives as well as hand-to-hand combat, sometimes resulting in death. Blood ranges from mild amounts to severe. At one point an open wound in shown with blood gushing from it. People are knocked unconscious as well.
  • A man occasionally mentions various gruesome forms of execution.
  • In at least three separate scenes, severed human heads are shown briefly.
  • On different occasions, two characters experience nightmares of another person throttling them in the middle of the night.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • In a test, the Hwarang have to drink several cups of strong liquor in quick succession. Before long, they are all hopelessly drunk and spend the rest of the evening reeling aimlessly or fighting each other before eventually passing out.
  • A girl quickly drinks an entire pot of liquor in one go and becomes ditzy.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A man pours poison on his blade to kill another man and the two begin to spar. Just then, the attacker's younger brother (Kim Taehyung ) realizes what is happening and grabs the poisoned blade with his bare hands. Blood trickles down his wrists as his brother yells at him to let go. It isn't long before his younger brother collapses and starts convulsing from the poison. They try to bring him help, but it is too late and he dies. This is a very intense, emotional scene.
  • A man occasionally suffers from fainting spells; his vision becomes blurry and he collapses.
  • A group of characters are threatened to be tortured to death. They are tied to chairs and the torture instruments are shown though nothing happens.
  • A man is whipped briefly while his younger brother watches helplessly.

Sex & Nudity

  • In order to preserve the royal bloodline, the Queen wants her son and daughter to marry each other. Nevertheless, they balk at the idea and it never comes to pass.

Violence & Gore

  • Peasants have their necks slashed in front of four characters in order to make one of them confess. Blood splatters on their clothes and on the ground.
  • Two men are brutally slashed. One feebly tries to help the other, carrying him for a while before collapsing. Unfortunately, the second eventually dies. These scenes contain large amounts of blood.

  • A woman slowly dies from repeatedly drinking poisoned tea.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A woman stabs a pregnant woman in the heart. Nevertheless, it is discovered that the baby survives as a doctor cuts him out of his mother's body (not shown).
  • In at least three different instances, a character jumps in front of another, taking an arrow for them.
  • People die from a plague and are strewn about, writhing in agony and coughing. As there is no antidote available, a doctor instead poisons a sickened woman. She explosively coughs up blood and dies.
