Christmas Books That Were Turned Into Movies ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Not everyone likes reading books. It demands a big chunk of your time and a lot of concentration. And come on, let’s be real, why bother when you can easily watch a two-hour movie adaptation that covers all the important scenes and leaves out all the fillers? Besides, even for the most avid book readers, diving into Christmas-themed books might not be very high up on their list of holiday priorities. So, what better way to fill in that book void on Christmas than by watching some Christmas films based on books?
Here are 5 holiday-themed books that were turned into movies.

Prime Video has released its “Red White & Royal Blue” film, based on Casey McQuiston’s novel, and viewers are in store for some great twists on romantic comedy tropes and foreign relations.
McQuiston’s novel follows Alex Claremont Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), son of the first woman to become president of the United States (Uma Thurman) as he butts heads with Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) constantly, which gets them both into trouble. The president sent her son to the royal wedding with only one operative: Do not cause a scene. But apparently, he caused a big enough commotion to take the cake — literally a large wedding cake toppled onto Alex and Henry after an altercation on the dance floor. Smoothing things over, at least in a famous fake friendship kind of way, the boys strike up an actual relationship, romantic and all.

Keira Knightley is a "Succession" fan, and her loyalties lie with one man: Tom Wambsgans. Tom is portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, who won the Emmy for the role last fall. Knightley and Macfadyen have appeared on screen together three times but perhaps most iconically starred in 2005's "Pride & Prejudice," in which Knightley played Elizabeth and Macfadyen was Mr. Darcy. And when speaking to Popsugar about her new movie "Boston Strangler," Knightley can't help but praise her former costar.
"I've been unbelievably lucky to work with Matthew three times," she says; the pair also teamed up for 2012's "Anna Karenina" and 2018's "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms." She explains, "He is such a joy. He is so funny. His performance in 'Succession' - I'm going to use a big word here - it's genius." Knightley's "Boston Strangler" costar Carrie Coon, also a "Succession" fan, adds, "He's extraordinary.

The holiday season is here and Pixar has a little gift for Disney+ subscribers.
After the animation studio’s next major effort was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the powers that be finally made the decision to release it on Disney’s streaming service. And that’s why you will now be able to watch Soul via Disney+ on Christmas Day. Soul stars Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner – an inspiring jazz musician who finally gets his chance when his soul enters the Great Beyond.
Soul isn’t the only gift on Disney+ in December 2020. The sure-to-be-thrilling finale of The Mandalorian season 2 will arrive on Dec. 18. After those two beg exciting tentpoles, it’s pretty much business as usual for Disney+ this month (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing). An original movie of note, Safety, premieres on Dec. 11 and should at least be of interest to Clemson football fans.

December is almost upon us, and Disney Plus has a great haul of movies/TV shows coming on Friday to kick off the month in style. In total, there are 11 titles hitting the Mouse House’s streaming service this week and while there’s no explicit Christmassy content to be found, the new arrivals do include a bunch of nostalgic favorites which make for perfect viewing this time of year.
First up, beloved 90s Fox animated effort Anastasia has always been mistaken for a Disney flick and now it officially is as it joins D+ on Friday. Legendary comedy film Big, which earned Tom Hanks his first Oscar nomination, likewise is on its way. Elsewhere, fans have been waiting to see 2005 superhero pic Sky High on Disney Plus ever since the platform launched and finally, the wait is over this week.

The Mouse House recently revealed that they’re looking to make exclusive streaming content their number one priority moving forward, which is just as well because at the moment, Disney Plus doesn’t have too many options for original movies and TV series that have the potential to grab headlines and dominate the online conversation.
Sure, Hamilton was a huge success, but aside from that and, obviously The Mandalorian, there haven’t been a whole lot of high profile titles added in 2020. Mulan may have generated a lot of attention despite being locked behind a paywall, but it’s probably fair to say that for the most part, the blockbuster received the opposite kind of publicity from what Disney were hoping for.

There’s a load of great content coming to Netflix in November, but just as is always the case, there are also a bunch of titles being removed from the streaming service at the same time. Next month, the platform is losing 53 movies and TV shows. There are some classics amongst them, too, unfortunately, so you might want to fit in a last minute rewatch before they vanish from Netflix’s library.
On the first day of November, four titles are being removed, including horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, children’s animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Gerard Butler action movie Olympus Has Fallen. 2017 horror Death House is also leaving on the 4th, while drama Into the Forest departs Netflix on the 6th and Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless is among those disappearing the following day.

Mackenzie Foy and Kate Winslet have signed up to star in Ashley Avis’s reboot of the classic story of ‘Black Beauty’.
Foy will take the leading role as a 17-year-old girl whose bond with Black Beauty helps her overcome the death of her parents.
Winslet will have an easier job of it as she will provide the voice of the horse, Black Beauty.

Helen Mirren laid down her thoughts on streaming platform Netflix during Warner Bros.’ presentation at 2019 CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
“I love Netflix… but f— Netflix,” Mirren said to promote her upcoming film “The Good Liar.” “There is nothing like sitting in the cinema, the lights go down, the incredible moment of excitement…”

Nato chief John Fithian assured movie theater execs in Las Vegas that streaming services like Netflix don’t have to be seen as a threat to their bottom line and that they can coexist.
While Fithian did not mention Netflix by name, he cited a 2017 Ernst & Young report that showed that moviegoers who frequently went to cinemas also spent more time on streaming services at home.

Keira Knightley is on a bit of hot streak as an actress, even if some of the projects she has been attached to haven’t quite made their mark. Earlier this year, she shone in Wash Westmoreland’s brilliant Colette, making big splash a few years before in more ‘modern’ fare as Say When and Begin Again, and more recently was the best thing in The Nutcracker And The Four Realms and the painfully awful Collateral Beauty. Whether in period or not, Knightley deserves her dues and while her latest film, romantic drama The Aftermath, fits somewhere in between those mentioned, she once again proves her worth.
Knightley stars as Rachael Morgan, wife to Lewis (Jason Clarke), who travels across Europe to Hamburg post World War II to be reunited with him at a palatial home which he is helping to rebuild. The city is a shell of what it once was,...

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “The Favourite,” won a top honor at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday. It picked up the period prize over two of its Oscar rivals — “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — as well as “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Another Oscar contender in that category, “Black Panther,” won the fantasy film race over “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
And the contemporary costumes of “Crazy Rich Asians” prevailed over “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” “Ocean’s 8,” “A Star Is Born” and “Widows.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” was snubbed by the guild which has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner. The winner of the period film Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars. However, that has not been the case for the last two years running.

Walt Disney Studios had a much more magical earnings report than analysts had expected. The entertainment powerhouse behind Pixar, Marvel, and the world’s most trafficked theme parks logged earnings per share of $1.84, a 3% drop from $1.89 in the prior-year quarter. Disney also reported revenue of $15.3 billion, essentially flat with the year-ago period.
Those results beat estimates. Wall Street was looking for earnings per share of $1.55 on revenue of $15.18 billion. The better-than-anticipated financial picture is attributable to higher broadcast revenues and the increased popularity of its parks, bright spots that off-set declines in Disney’s film division. The company faced difficult comparisons because it did not field any “Star Wars” sequel or spinoff during the holidays for the first time in four years. The lack of a “Star Wars” film also took a bite out of licensing profits.

Misty Copeland was dancing on air while making The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. In this exclusive sneak peek at one of the bonus features included in the film's Blu-ray and digital release, Copeland—who had a featured role as the Ballerina Princess—speaks candidly and joyously about what it meant to her. "I never imagined I would be a part of a film of this magnitude, so when Disney wanted to have me be a part of it, it was just like a no-brainer. The Nutcracker was the very first ballet that I ever performed in, and I performed the role of Clara," Copeland said. "It makes sense, I think, to have ballet—to have dance—be a part of this film." Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild kudos. While our fifth contender – “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that these awards often overlook one of the Academy Awards nominees. Hollywood got the best gift of all on Christmas Eve. The domestic box office reached a new benchmark even before the busiest time of year for moviegoing commences.
Blockbusters including Disney’s “Black Panther” and “Incredibles 2,” Universal’s “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” and Fox’s “Deadpool 2” drove sales past $11.383 billion, according to Comscore. That puts 2018’s haul ahead of the record $11.382 billion set in 2016, with over a week left to go in the year.
It got more expensive to go to the movies, and ticket prices hit a new high, averaging $9.38 over the summer. But it’s not just the rising cost of admission accounting for the surge. Attendance is also up over 4% from last year.
As of Christmas Day, five of the top 10 biggest domestic releases of the year came from Disney. A pair of Marvel titles nabbed the first two slots, with “Black Panther” generating $700 million...

What is the reason for Hollywood’s sudden itch to tell stories about a man who died 15 years ago and whose PBS show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” went off the air two years before that? “There’s a big one in the White House,” “You Are My Friend” co-writer Micah Fitzerman-Blue answers. Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” and Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the VFX Oscar shortlist. They will compete in the January 5 bakeoff with Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “Christopher Robin,” “Ready Player One,” Marvel Best Picture contender “Black Panther,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,”“Mary Poppins Returns,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and “Welcome to Marwen.”
Failing to make the cut, however, were animated upstarts “Incredibles 2” and “Isle of Dogs,” DC’s “Aquaman,” “Bumblebee,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,””Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” “Mortal Engines,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,”“Paddington 2,” and “A Quiet Place.”
This season has become a showdown between “First Man” and “Infinity War” — reshaping in-camera VFX for Nasa’s trip to the moon versus Marvel’s brilliant CG Thanos. And a win for “Infinity War” would mark Marvel Studio’s first Oscar.

Is 2018 an anomaly, or is it a harbinger of things to come?
The awards derbies of recent years have seen a predominance of indie films at the expense of big studio features — resulting in a slate of Oscar contenders devoid not only of genuine blockbusters but also of more modest mid-budget crowd-pleasers. This has dampened the ratings of the Oscars telecast, much to the consternation of the Academy.
But this year feels different, with studio pics including “Black Panther,” “First Man” (pictured above) and “A Star Is Born” definitely in the running.
And along with this rise in the fortunes of studio pictures, many artisans who have worked on them — from cinematographers to costume designers to visual-effects supervisors — are seeing their projects attain a new level of acclaim and respect.
But before the distribution of the top prizes Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre, these artisans will have to run the...

“Mortal Engines,” a steampunk fantasy adventure, is also an epic flop.
With a budget of just over $100 million and tens of millions in global marketing costs, executives at rival studios estimate that the movie will lose upwards of $100 million. Some even project that number could float to more than $125 million. “Mortal Engines” has so far made a paltry $42 million globally. The sci-fi epic came into a crowded marketplace at a competitive time of year, opening against the well-reviewed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “The Mule,” a Clint Eastwood thriller that had a better start than expected. “Mortal Engines,” on the other hand, launched below estimates, generating just $7.5 million when it debuted in North America.
“This is a true Christmas disaster and a lump of coal for Universal,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “They took a big swing, and they struck out.”

A producer on Twitter recently entreated critics not to craft Worst-of lists this year, and I couldn’t disagree more: Observers of film should absolutely be praising the best of cinema, but it’s only by remembering the shortcomings of the art form by which, ideally, artists can learn from their mistakes. And mistakes were definitely made this year:
10. (tie) “Peppermint”/”Proud Mary” /”Red Sparrow”: Can we have some strong screenplays to go with our strong female leads, please? This trashy trio of action sagas put guns in the hands of some of our most talented actresses but then forgot to supply them with things like character, motivation, or logic.
9. “Christopher Robin”: After dumping the last great “Winnie the Pooh” animated feature on a Harry Potter opening weekend, Disney added insult to injury by crafting this glum and tedious look at a grown-up Christopher (Ewan McGregor) in the throes of a midlife crisis.

“We really wanted to take the story that everyone knew from the ballet and expand it and turn it into more of a character journey for Clara the heroine,” screenwriter Ashleigh Powell tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive interview above). It is her debut film, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” which is now in theaters with Mackenzie Foy in the lead role and Keira Knightley receiving top billing as the Sugar Plum Fairy. In our red carpet chat she adds, “It’s very beautiful and whimsical, but it’s a little bit of a fever dream that there’s no real emotional arc for her over the course of it, so we wanted to [use the source material as] the starting point of a much larger adventure into the world that we haven’t necessarily seen before on the big screen.”
