Perhaps This Show Got a Spark?
ThomasDrufke16 November 2015
I've been relatively hard on this show through the first few episodes, but I think this was probably the best they have had to offer thus far. That's not saying much but the writing was significantly improved. This week Supergirl took on the poor man's Electro in 'Livewire'. You have to forgive the name, but you can't really forgive the unmemorable performance from Brit Morgan. But if nothing else, Livewire made for a different type of villain than Supergirl has faced so far.

With the villain being Livewire, a radio host turned super-villain, the show shifted focus to Cat Grant this week who had a close connection to Livewire. Throughout Grant's borderline un-watchable run as Kara's main obstacle at Catco, we have yet to see a different side to Grant. Always just a stuck up b*tch for all intents and purposes. But the writers showed a different and welcomed side to Grant that seemed jarring at first, but anything is better than what we were getting. Since this episode was technically suppose to air next week (CBS shifted the 4th and 5th episodes in light of the Paris attacks), I hope this new relationship between Grant and Kara won't go back to what it was, considering Kara is apparently babysitting Grant's son (what an intriguing premise for a superhero episode).

Kara and Alex *welcomed* in their mother for thanksgiving this week as Helen Slater, the first actress to play Supergirl in 1983, played Eliza Danvers. It's cool to see her and Dean Cain, actor who played Superman in the 90's TV show, show up in this universe but I found both performances to be really bland. A major step down from John Wesley Shipp's turn as Barry's father over on The Flash. Joining the Danvers for thanksgiving was Winn who apparently didn't have any family to stay with. The writers are definitely pushing Winn to be the main love interest for Kara and get us to feel much more sympathy towards him over Jimmy Olsen, who seems to be show up at the worst times as of late. This is fine, I just wish the writers handled Winn's character with more care to begin with.

In all, I'm glad this show is at least creating something for us to look forward to with upcoming episodes as it was revealed that Kara and Alex's father died while working for the DEO. If nothing else, that could make for an interesting dynamic to come. The effects were lackluster but the performances from Cat Grant and Alex were improved. Plus, it was at least a change up to the boss fight we were getting used to.

+Cat Grant was bearable

+Different villain

+Gave us something to care about

-Bland performances from the parents

-Effects on the plane sequence

Best Episode So Far
slightlymad2212 January 2017
4 episodes in, and this is the best episode so far.

Plot In A Paragraph: Supergirl's (Melissa Benoist) has multiple problems in this episode as her earth mother (former Supergirl actress Helen Slater) visits for Thanksgiving, while an accident transforms a volatile CatCo employee into Livewire.

Former Superman Dean Cain pops up here too, but we get more of Calista Flockhart's Cat Grant in this episode, which is a good thing, as for me, she is easily the best thing in the show. You shouldn't like her as she can be blunt and nasty, but Flockhart plays the role with such panache you can't help but like her, as she fails to know who her employees are, or she asks "Oh what fresh incompetence is this??" And says lines such as "We got over you not voting for Hilary in 2006, we can get over this??" She is the main reason I am persevering with the show.

I still has problems as we still got the lame love triangle between James, Winn and Kara, and for some reason, I didn't like it when Kara repeatedly referred to her Mom as her "Foster Mom" either.

Kara's dad intrigues, but I'm not a fan of this version of Livewire
sssuperman-dot-com3 January 2016
This episode actually really excited me because of Dean Cain, the actor who played Superman in Lois & Clark (a show which I like a lot more than this one) and the role his character (Kara's foster dad) played in the story, which intrigued me greatly. In the end, I don't think it was enough to make me care too much about this alright but fairly uninteresting TV show, but it certainly did excite me at least temporarily.

I don't really like how they portrayed Livewire here. Instead of fun and mischievous, she's bitter and angry, and doesn't come across as particularly bright either. She was a villain I enjoyed reasonably well in the Superman Animated Series (and the few comics I read with her in it), so this was disappointing.

Warning: Spoilers
It's official Cat grant is my favorite character, what a work on her character. In this episode I have seen a part of cat that I never seen, more human part, the real her. Her exchange with Kara during leslie's attacks or even the work in her relationship with leslis were great. The intrigue about Alex was really cool, seeing the past of Kara and the Danvers family was really cool. Now who is really Henken Shaw.
