THE SILENT SERVICE "The Hawkbill's Revenge" 1958

This is the 54th episode of the U.S. war series, "The Silent Service". The series was about the exploits of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet. Each episode is a stand-alone tale of the actions of a particular submarine. Most of the stories are about actions against the Japanese Navy and merchant fleet in the Pacific. There is also the odd tale from the Korean conflict. The series ran for 78 episodes during 1957 and 1958. The stories were all based on actual events. Some pretty good attention to detail here with the U.S Navy allowing filming on several WW 2 era Gato class subs.

Each episode started and ended with retired Real Admiral Thomas M. Dykers giving a breakdown of the action. Dykers became a writer, producer and technical adviser after leaving the service. He worked on films such as, TORPEDO ALLEY, FLAT TOP, THE FROGMEN, HELL AND HIGH WATER and SUBMARINE COMMAND.

This episode is about the U.S.S. "Hawkbill". Early 1945 and the "Hawkbill" is heading out on her fourth wartime patrol. She is patrolling the waters off Malaya looking for targets of a Japanese nature. She spots a small convoy and dispatches a freighter to the bottom and damages an escort vessel.

The "Hawkbill" meets another US submarine heading back to Australia after her patrol. The captain of this submarine passes on info that one of their group had been sunk by a Japanese escort. This does not sit well with the "Hawkbill" Captain, as he was good friends with the Officer in charge of the lost submarine. He swears to get some payback.

And as luck would have it, he runs into the same Japanese escort and exacts a bit of revenge by sinking it. There is also a run-in with various other escorts and Japanese aircraft. The "Hawkbill" is given a good thumping by several well placed depth charges. The submarine though manages to limp back to base in Fremantle Australia.

The "Hawkbill" would complete 5 wartime patrols sinking at least 3 Japanese ships. She was placed in reserve for several years before being transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy. She was renamed the "Zeeleeuw" (Sealion) and served with the Dutch till being sold for scrap in 1970.

The cast is made up of, Paul Dubov, Stanley Clements, Joe Turkel, Ray Montgomery and Don Nagel.
