Funny at times; but overall disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, the preview for this movie had me believing it was the scariest thing out in a while, but it isn't. A lot of the parts in the beginning were funny as the main character is deciding to make his exit from the corporate world. But the "terror" in the woods I found silly. I couldn't piece together how the characters were related unless we are to think that they too came to the woods to escape the confines of the business world and became savages in the process. I didn't get it and hated to have wasted even .99 on this title. I'm sure there is a deeper meaning I'm missing somewhere.

Have you ever felt like you were being watched?

Warning: Spoilers
The best thing about this movie is it's suspense. It's a short film and would be even shorter if it didn't have overly long slow motion running scenes.

I found the main characters acting to be pretty good but just about everyone else I hated. The gf the employer even the other guy in the woods.

It came across as a the Blair witch spin off sort of.

The score was great and gave the sequences that are supposed to be horror a whimsical feeling.

The feeling of being watched and being unsafe and restless are convincing.

The way it blends dream and waking adds to the feeling of unease.

I did find the end a little blank and empty.

It did keep me interested and pulled me along.

Very difficult to watch to the end
richkohring4 September 2016
I don't review many films. I tend to only be compelled to do so if I don't like one, maybe as a warning to other potential unfortunate souls.

I watch a lot of rubbish films, I'm not fussy usually, most films entertain me to an extent. But then there's some which offend me by wasting my time, i.e. the transformers films, High Rise, any torture porn film such as Saw, The Holiday, Catwoman.......

Then there are films like this. I would have warned about spoilers, but I don't even know what happened in the film for me to spoil it for you. The short synopsis on this site pretty much covered it. There was one scene in the first 20 minutes which nearly brought a smile to my face, it was supposed to be a funny moment but like I said, it ''nearly'' bought a smile to my face, which is a long way from a laugh.

There was nothing interesting, no tension, horror, comedy, suspense, I've had more entertaining poo's.

Absolutely terrible
missdayglowarrior13 April 2020
I paid 2 dollars to watch this and that is 2 dollars too much. The first 25 minutes are almost entirely inconsequential and the next hour is boring, with 3 itty bitty scares. I laughed far more often than I should have. The internet is lying to you when they say this is a good film.

Very Disappointing
dana-kellish30 June 2020
I got suckered in to watching this film because iTunes movies showed that it has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Don't fall for that. While there are a couple of creepy scenes, and you're kept guessing, its VERY leisurely pace and totally unsatisfying conclusion will leave you wishing you'd spent your $2 on something else.

Self Congratulatory Piece

This film should have been produced as a 15min short. If it were submitted in film school, it may achieve high praise; however, this should not have been distributed for mass consumption. Little to no plot, mislabeled horror, and painfully staid at times.

Waste of Time
runbirdfan9 December 2023
Horrible waste of time. Pointless scenes are drawn out by the character just staring off into space. This is no horror film. The main character isn't even likeable so we aren't invested in his problems or the outcome. Bad writing. Bad sound. Bad music. My only regret was that I watched this movie instead of doing the At-home-brain-surgery that I clearly needed to endure this pos film. I could eat a box of Alpha Bits and poop a better script than this movie. The trailer has quotes of "scariest movie in a decade ". Not a chance. There was nothing scary about this film. The "creepy" stuff had obvious explanations. Save your time and skip this borefest.

Reviewers notes, humbly submitted:

1. Had the pleasure of a chance meeting with this film just after doing back to back re-reviews of Mission Impossible #4 and #5, showcasing the ultimate in Hollywood excess, and starring the youngest 50+ year old on the planet, Tom Cruise. THE INTERIOR on the other hand is, clearly, a Canadian indie, so this necessitated a downshift in expectations. From Hollywood we expect a roller coaster ride. From an indie, we expect something else, perhaps a look at the world around us, perhaps a look deep within ourselves. THE INTERIOR is about the latter.

2. The first 25 minutes are deceptive, bringing to mind the Michael Douglas 1993 film FALLING DOWN. However, as the writer/director makes clear (by literally cutting in the title precisely at this point) that is merely the setup for what is to come.

3. Reviewers and fans of the film have deigned to classify it as "light horror" and I do not disagree. Just as the iconic film REPULSION showed us that an apartment could also be considered a dungeon, a cage, and a mirror for the soul, THE INTERIOR shows us that the woods, the outdoors, can provide the same metaphor. (I remember a quote, forgot the author, about the wilderness, effectively saying that there are really only two kinds of people when it comes to the wild -- those that were raised in it, and everyone else.)

4. The film works well as a psychological study, moreso after the 25 minute demarcation point than before. Patrick McFadden does a yeoman job with the material he has to work with, reminding me very much of Henry Rollins in the cult indie HE NEVER DIED. Always focused, always moving forward.

I loved this film!
torijoyous-6996418 August 2020
I have to say, I watch a lot of horror/thrillers (though not the "murdery" kind, and I haven't been this scared by a movie in a long time. I was absolutely riveted throughout the forest scene and often found myself squinting or holding my fingers in front of my eyes because some of the moments were so tense, and I didn't know what was going to happen. Trevor Juras, who both wrote and directed the film, did an excellent job of scaring me without showing me what the terror was. That is the best kind of writing. The actors he chose for this film were completely convincing and excellent. And lastly, I just want to say that I could really relate to the protagonist and feel what it was like to be in his position. Believe me, that is NOT a position I ever want to be in, which made the film all the more tense. And, although some viewers felt the ending was ambiguous, I thought it made perfect sense. There may be some room for interpretation, but I was able to make my own interpretation quite easily. Not sure if that's what Juras was going for, but it felt like enough of a resolution for me, and he still didn't set us free of the tension by showing us exactly what or who we should be afraid of. I hope Juras keeps making movies this well. I'll be on the lookout for his next project because I am truly impressed with this debut feature.

Creepy
SoundsOKtoMe5 June 2021
Low budget creepy psychological fare. Not for fans of Transformers or Pacific Rim. Not for the impatient. Not for those who want everything tied up neatly and explained.

This movie doesn't really start till the guy gets to the forest. Then creepy stuff starts to happen it builds up well. Lightning was good too in the forest scenes.

So Scary, But Not in The Way You Might Expect
torijoyous26 October 2018
I am astonished by the lackluster reviews I'm seeing here. I thought The Interior was one of the scariest movies I've seen in a long time and utterly engaging. The part in the forest (which is most of the movie) was by far the most interesting bit, but I mean, somebody on here said there was no tension. I felt like the forest part of the film was just tension after tension after tension, and more tension. I was watching the film late at night, and I should have been going to sleep, but I was too engaged and had to keep watching. This movie was listed as a thriller, but I would consider it mild horror. I will say that there were many times I had to watch between my fingers or squint my eyes because I was afraid of what I might see. The writer/director, Trevor Juras, really knows how to scare you without splashing violence across the screen. The best and most effective kind of scare.

In any case, I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll just close by saying I really hope the filmmaker gets the recognition he deserves. This was a piece of top-notch storytelling as far as I'm concerned. Well done.
