Horrors on the high sea are a common enough theme, from Ghost Ship and Deathship to The Haunting of the Mary Celeste and Titanic 666 there are plenty of them. The most recent of these, The Haunting of the Queen Mary opens on Halloween Eve,1938 when the ship’s festivities are replaced with terror as an axe-wielding man hacks his way through its corridors.
The plot then circles back a few hours to show Gwen and David Ratch sneaking into an exclusive party in an attempt to get their daughter Jackie introduced to some Hollywood stars who they hope can help her become the next Shirley Temple.

Critters 2 – Hoopla, Tubi
If there’s a quintessential Easter horror movie to watch this week, it’s Critters 2. Plucky hero Brad (Scott Grimes) returns to the small town of Grover’s Bend to visit Grandma just in time for the town’s Easter celebration. Too bad someone mixed up Crite eggs for regular Easter eggs. The pint-sized critters set their sights on the Easter bunny before letting loose their insatiable appetite on the town. Think...

This is my fourth time covering the Berlinale Shorts for Directors Notes. Each year I’ve always been struck by the diversity of films on offer – ranging from animation to video art to self-reflexive documentary forms – as well as the wide-ranging filmmaking perspectives the programme brings. Being able to express a self-contained idea in just under 30 minutes, they represent cinema in its purest, most unfiltered form. This year might be the best collection yet, featuring a dazzling array of shorts that seemingly exist in the porous border between dreams and reality, seamlessly moving between different modes of filmmaking expression. Avoiding standard representations and simplistic three-act structures, the Berlinale Shorts show how the short format is unbound by financial expectations or narrative conventionality – allowing the viewer kaleidoscopic insight into the very best of international cinema. Here are our selections for ten films definitely worth putting on your radar.

Valentine's Day means different things to different people. For some, it's a joyous celebration of the people in their lives. For others, it's a painful reminder of loves lost and broken hearts. Then, for the rest of us, it's a springboard for silly slashers about lovesick killers. Second only to Christmas, Valentine's Day might well be the most popular holiday in slasher flicks. The innate tension between treacly intimacy and gonzo gore is too good an opportunity to pass up, and for time immemorial, creatives have merged both love and fear in increasingly twisted ways.
Some recent editions to the horror canon, like "Bones and All" and "Spring," while not strictly speaking Valentine's Day-themed, are deeply romantic, reminding audiences of how perfectly the two disparate emotions can coalesce into something amazing. Here, we'll be looking at horror movies specifically about the most romantic day of the year. From old school slashers to creepy,...

Netflix is back with a new bag of holiday offerings to distract you from cooking and wrapping presents, and we’ve got the run-down of the best and worst, although this is an exceptionally good batch of Christmas movies. With that in mind, we’ve done our best to help you find what best suits your holiday vibe, so you know what to curl up with at the end of a long day spent trying to remember how to socialize after three winters’ worth of partying on Zoom.
The below list is ranked from what is, in our opinion, the best holiday treats Netflix is offering to the worst.

Ever since his first trip to Russia in the late 1990s, filmmaker Antoine Cattin has always been tickled by his adopted country’s record number of national celebrations. Born in Switzerland and based in Saint Petersburg for the past two decades, Cattin has paid an up-close and rather bemused view to the parade of party days where people take to the streets, fireworks light up the sky, and the government sends often contradictory messages about national heritage and civic pride.
With “Holidays,” which is set over the course of seven of such public fêtes, and which will world premiere at Cph: Dox on March 29, Cattin both filmed and offered cameras to a Kazakh migrant, an aging public administrator, a xenophobic young activist, and a thrill-seeking urban explorer, making the film’s four characters both subjects and guides on a kaleidoscopic tour of modern Russia.

Right from the title director Gia Elliot and co-writer Emma Fitzpatrick make it clear that Take Back the Night isn’t just another monster movie. By using the slogan of many marches and movements protesting violence against women as their title they signal their intention to make this about more than simple scares.
The challenge with that is not letting the message overwhelm the actual plot and the film’s entertainment value. Or worse become heavy-handed and preachy. The Hunting, which I recently reviewed, is an example, its message about veterans and Ptsd taking over what was supposed to be a werewolf film. Can the makers of Take Back the Night succeed where many have failed before?...

As this past week was the first week of December, Netflix got things rolling with the usual glut of new titles. It’s easy to miss everything that went up on the streaming giant over the past seven days, so we’ve compiled a handy recap of every single movie and TV show that dropped from Monday, November 30th to Sunday, December 6th. In total, that’s 58 new additions.
The 1st obviously delivered the bulk of the haul, serving up a ton of fresh films to keep you entertained as we begin the festive season. Among the highlights was the original Jurassic Park and one of its sequels and if you missed them at the beginning of the week, you can also catch the likes of romcom 50 First Dates, animated film Monster House and the one and only E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. As for TV shows, all of Stargate was likewise added the same day.

Somehow, December starts on Tuesday even though it only feels like yesterday that the world was turning as normal and everyone was going about their business as usual before the Coronavirus pandemic came along and changed everything. As is the case every time we enter a new month, though, the various streaming services on offer are adding a whole host of new titles to their libraries and over the next seven days, Netflix has more than 50 movies and TV shows heading our way.
The list contains about everything you’d expect, from some all-time classics to several pretty terrible efforts that still stand a decent chance of cracking the Top 10 most-watched list, while there are even a couple of Adam Sandler films thrown in for good measure along with a handful of high-profile originals, and you can check out the full and exhaustive selection below.

With 31 seasons, The Simpsons is still showing no signs of slowing down, although we’re a long way removed from the classic era of the series. Of course, over time, there’ve been various ideas about how we might get a resolution to the story, including many different futures, but The Simpsons writers have always had a tongue-in-cheek approach to putting a definitive stop to the show. ScreenRant are now suggesting, though, that we may have already seen hints of the ending, or even an episode that will act as a retrospective coda.
According to the theory, the only way for The Simpsons to truly end is with the death of Homer, something that’s almost happened on multiple occasions. Furthermore, this conclusion might also involve the character going through a redemption of sorts, and a return to the more rounded version we saw during initial depictions.

Come True is the newest feature from acclaimed Canadian filmmaker, visual effects artist and musician Anthony Scott Burns and executive produced by cult filmmaker Vincenzo Natali, director of Cube, Splice and Netflix’s In The Tall Grass. A dark exploration into a world of nightmares, fears, and the monsters within, the film is a Copperheart Entertainment and Angel Entertainment production. Burns wrote, directed, and shot the film, with music by Electric Youth (Drive) and Pilotpriest.
High school student Sarah (Stone) is at her lowest point yet when she runs away from home and finds herself with no one to rely on and struggling with recurring nightmares. She chances upon a university sleep study that offers the promise of safety and money and brings her an unexpected friend and confidant in the overseeing scientist Jeremy (Liboiron). But there’s something curious about proceedings, and being under observation seems to make Sarah’s disturbing dreams even worse.

Anthony Scott Burns, known for Father's Day (pictured above), his profoundly creepy contribution to the anthology film Holidays, as well as short films like Manifold, will soon see his upcoming sci-fi thriller Come True gain a wider audience. How do I know this? Because Variety reports that Paris-based sales and co-production company Reel Suspects has acquired international sales rights, joining forces with Los Angeles-based sales and production company Xyz Films, which handles U.S. rights, and Canada-based Raven Banner Entertainment, which holds Canadian distribution rights. And, yes, that's a lot of rights -- and I should note here that Todd Brown, this site's founder and editor, is Head of International Acquisitions for Xyz Films, though he was not involved in the writing, editing, or researching of...

For Emmy-winning dancer and choreographer Derek Hough, “The Disney Family Singalong” was an opportunity “to stay creative and to bring joy. We’re entertainers. It’s what we do.” ABC put together the event that aired on April 16 featuring various performers doing renditions of classic Disney songs while socially distancing during the coronavirus pandemic. They’re even doing it again on May 10, and Hough will be performing then too. Watch our exclusive video interview with him above about his work this season on those specials as well as “Holidays with the Houghs” and “World of Dance.”
Hough has choreographed stage shows and TV production numbers, but putting together his performance with his partner Hayley Erbert to “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast” posed new challenges — not the least of which was pulling it off by themselves in just a couple of days. “We did the lighting ourselves, we did the cameras,...

Sibling rivalry seldom gets treated with any seriousness in modern mainstream cinema. This makes Esteban Arango’s new coming-of-ager Blast Beat quite the rarity on first glance. Brothers in name only, metal head Carly (Mateo Arias) and skater punk Teo (Moises Arias) can hardly share the same space together without going to war over something. The former is a mathematical genius that dreams of becoming a Nasa scientist in the United States, while the latter has talent to be a great artist but seems happiest committing petty crimes and tagging city walls in their native Bogotá.
This tenuous familial relationship is made even more so because of Colombia’s violent political climate in 1999. Government forces are waging war against guerilla outfits in the jungle as corruption runs rampant in the cities. After experiencing an upper-middle class existence for much of their life, the two wayward teens are thrust into an uncomfortable moment of transition.

February is known as Women in Horror Month, when the spotlight is put on female filmmakers working inside our favorite genre, and many horror sites run pieces about movies directed by women. And that’s great! But there’s no reason why that spotlight should be limited to only one month, particularly when there are so many brilliant and talented female filmmakers working in the genre. Why not use this October to hit up these titles on Shudder and get to know some of the most exciting female voices in horror right now?

The first teaser has arrived for the Tiff drama/mystery Buster’s Mal Heart, led by Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek. Penned, helmed, and edited by Sarah Adina Smith (who had a segment in the horror anthology Holidays, as well as directed The Midnight Swim) in her sophomore feature, the film concerns an on-the-run mountain man (Malek) who has survived the harsh winter conditions by breaking into empty houses in a remote town. Plagued by visions of drifting at sea and of his past life, he also frequently calls into a radio station to rant about Y2K and other dangers — a station where he has now gained the moniker “Buster.”
The teaser borrows from The Shining‘s playbook, utilizing the ominous repetitions of a ball hitting a wall to guide the edits through haunting portraits of family life paired with loneliness and isolation. It then dips into a fast...

When it comes to genre television series as of late, there are a few shows that get more love than others. And since I finally caught up with the recent season two finale of Scream: The TV Series, I thought now would be the perfect time to tip my hat to this underrated series that not only wears its horror-loving heart so very clearly on its sleeve, but also keeps the mystery-fueled spirit of Wes Craven’s films alive and kicking, all while showcasing a lot of fantastic talent behind the camera as well.
And as much as I adore those first two factors, it’s that final part—the way Scream: The TV Series has utilized some incredible directorial talent—that has made me a staunch supporter of the show, as I’d argue that Scream may the best genre series that most fans have consistently overlooked ever since it debuted last summer.

Let’s see if this one is going to be more treats than tricks, or just an overstuffed and overcooked turkey!
