A faux-documentary about UFOs with decent execution.
Endless_011 October 2021
I'm a UFO fanatic, so I went into this movie with a certain amount of joy to see something different. Granted, I didn't have high expectations, after all, we know that horror and faux-documentary movies are not usually very good, however, the execution of this one was much better than I expected. With a good budget and use of camera techniques, the creators managed to create a film that, despite not being a marvel of special effects, contains well-designed scenes with good entertainment value.

The script is a bit heavy-handed, leaving much to be desired, but it manages to establish certain real-life connections with fictional events in a good way, creating a sort of historical universe within its own limits. The characters are, for the most part, typical cliché examples of movies of this type, but I've seen worse so I cut them some slack. The performances are decent, not the best, but what else can we expect?

Probably what I hated the most was the idiotic subplot about the alien-crazy guy. I found it unnecessary, cliche, redundant and even a bit cringe-worthy, mainly because it didn't add anything interesting to the scene and only served as a sort of punching bag of mysteries.

In the end, it's a short, entertaining movie that manages to combine real scenes with cinematic scenes and creates a somewhat interesting conspiracy story, which although affected by its delirious script and half-developed characters, manages to entertain for 1 hour and 20 minutes without major complaints. Also, the aliens and the development of the scenes is entertaining, as well as the multiple scenes from the POV of the military. It's worth it if you like the genre and feel like killing time.

The Phoenix Incident Could have been good, But failed
warrenf_peace18 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The film started out well, and built suspense fairly decently. The integration of actual footage was really well done. When the air battle began, I thought it looked pretty good. And the crash was very cool. Alas, the protagonist quartet of unlikable twenty- and thirty-something 'adolescents' were so two-dimensional (as was the suicidal hermit Gayson), I felt like "are these the only archetypes we can come up with? They are always such douchebags!" And as soon as the jar head Marine (the MOST unlikable of the bunch) takes off to 'rescue the downed pilot' (perhaps?), the descent into bad horror film ripoffs began, and I was looking forward for the jarhead to be anally probed (if ONLY the aliens would have done that sort of thing...). And please, ET's that walk on 4 legs (and who pilot sophisticated anti-gravity machines in the nude) are NEVER going to be believable!!! Next, STOP IT with the monster aliens - they are more ridiculous than frightening - PLUS, the ending was less than satisfying, which is why I scored it less than 50%,

The film had potential, and from the IMDb reviews, I thought, "Heck, it's only $4 on Amazon, so I'll give it a chance (Amazon rated it 3 of 5 stars, IMDb Said 5.6 (of ten). From now on, if a film has this score, I Am gonna KICK myself.

Tedium and terror
phenomynouss18 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
**mild spoilers**

I saw the very similar film "The Phoenix Tapes 97" weeks earlier from here, and was blown away at how oddly compelling it was, while using an actual 1990s video camera to make it look like actual footage from 1997 rather than relying on unconvincing video effects to make it look like old footage, and how that acted as a perfect cover to hide any CGI or unconvincing costumes.

I didn't know this film, The Phoenix Incident, was going to follow the same route. It's almost ironic (not ironic) that after I had praised "Phoenix Tapes 97" for using an actual 90s camera and not relying on unconvincing video effects, this film "The Phoenix Incident" relies on unconvincing video effects.

The core of the film is a found footage story of the supposed four missing hikers during the Phoenix Lights incident, just like in "Phoenix Tapes 97" although in this film they use the actual names of the supposedly missing hikers. The video effects to make the footage look like it's from 1997 is thoroughly unconvincing and during some of the later scenes of the movie, seemingly start to not work properly, as the footage looks oddly smooth and crisp and clear, like they removed their 1997 filter for a few minutes at a time.

This found footage story is long, drawn out, and boring until it gets to the spooky alien stuff. Crowding around it to try to keep the story going is a very long framing device of a "documentary" chronicling the story of the "coverup" of the Phoenix Lights incident, involving the military, a crazy religious man as a red herring, and a supposed ongoing war against aliens that has been fought throughout the middle east and Africa prior to the Phoenix Lights incident.

It's all rather tedious, with some brief moments of genius, such as the revelation that the "lights" themselves weren't a UFO sighting, but actually flares dropped by the military... to distract from a genuine dogfight between F-16s and 2 triangular alien craft, which we actually get to see unfold from both the F-16 pilots point of view and from the hikers watching from the ground.

The film finally picks up at this point, but foregoing its horror aspect and becoming an odd action thriller tone, as the four hikers go on a high speed ATV chase from the aliens, complete with action movie-style twists, turns, and explosions, followed by a shootout at the crazy religious guy's ranch. This odd tonal shift, while trying to stick to its found footage style, seems to make the film come apart as it loses focus of its original plot. The video effects to make it look like 90s video are almost completely gone by this point, with only some barely-there film grain as a token reminder of what it was originally supposed to be. There's even dramatic Hollywood-style music going on during these sequences, and it's never clear who is even holding the camera at times or why they're still filming.

This movie doesn't seem to be able to fully commit to one style or another. There's an insistence on being a found footage film, while using the military coverup framing device to be like a mockumentary film, while containing multiple intricate and sometimes CG-heavy action scenes more befitting a gritty action thriller. Rather than failing at all three, like most films, the action thriller parts of this film are actually cool and beautifully executed, especially the dogfight with alien craft.

This film should have committed itself to the military angle and sharply reduced or possibly even left out the entirety of the found footage angle. "The Phoenix Tapes 97" does this exact same story with the found footage aspect done with an actual 1990s video camera for a far more authentic look while by the nature of its much narrower scope is much more taut and concise than "The Phoenix Incident" is.

Annoying
jacques-europe26 October 2015
I have seen many found footage movies and some of them are quite good, as they 1. allow the viewer to get an idea of the whole scenery and 2. as they give your eyes some calm moments. The viewer needs time to understand what's actually going on!

This movies doesn't do anything of that. It's really hard work to watch the found footage scenes, so shaky, the image even switches off completely for many times, the cam crashes against walls and the ground with wild movements, a tour de force for your eyes, so much that it gets really annoying. I wanted to shout out loud: stop finally moving!

While the story could have been very exciting (the basic idea is not bad), the 4 main characters sometimes behave like crazy. Just imagine someone dangerous follows you in the dark. And your first reaction is: shout as loud as possible, speak loudly, use your torch to show everyone within the next 2 miles where you are, and that ALL the time. That's what these 4 guys do. So empathy has no chance to grow for them. After a while of watching I thought: just stop filming guys and get caught finally.

The pseudo-documentary style of the movie is OK, if you like that kind of movie. To me it's a little bit too much of history channel's "the secret alien files" kind of stuff: the camera, the editing, the light of the interview scenes - just the way those scenes are made I have seen before too many times on TV. The director clearly needs to find a way to make his individual kind of movie. Now it's just a collection of copied elements. Truly better than "sharknado", but not much better than every pseudo-documentary on TV.

another found footage movie
lunchoutk17 October 2015
well, found footage movies are usually cheap and nasty affairs and the shaky camera is used to cover bad directing.

This one is different, the characters are believable, the effects are good and the directing is smooth and enjoyable. and here comes the BUT the go pro style footage is far too shaky and swinging, certain segments of the movie are completely unwatchable due to this and mildly nausea inducing.

The characters have lucid moments and are friendly and believable but start screaming and shouting in a manner that is unbelievable and ruins any form connection you have with them.

Nothing new and needs refining

The problem with this movie is that nothing makes any sense.
micheldecoeyer4 August 2017
I really had high hopes for this movie as I had just watched Phoenix Forgotten and I thought maybe this would be as interesting or even better... But it's not even close. There are too many technical errors and storytelling errors to enjoy it.

Things that I found were wrong with this movie:

-The classic footage is not 4:3 and the aging effect is not realistic -The characters aren't interesting -While filming the Phoenix Lights they suddenly start filming themselves instead of the UFO sighting. Who would actually do that? -The aliens are bad CGI and look like the xenomorph from the 'Alien' movies -The news channels have names that don't make sense, very unconvincing -There are too many camera angles. Also too many cameras in Gayson's place. Why does he have all those security cameras? Also it's 1997! -Gayson's theories and everything he says doesn't fit the movie. There is some Heaven's Gate mixed in ("recycling the Earth", the bunk beds in his compound, the portrait of the Alien is the exact same that 'Do' from Heaven's Gate had and don't look anything like the aliens in the movie) and it all doesn't fit the movie because the aliens aren't even trying to get them alive, they for no reason seem to kill them and then take them, and they are not stealthy at all at doing it. -One of the guys shuts the trunk in a hurry and leaves a camera in the trunk?

There are so many things in this movie that don't make any sense. If you're gonna watch a found footage Phoenix Lights movie, watch the 2017 Phoenix Forgotten. It's way more enjoyable and has character development.

Wow!! Really?? $16.00 to see this "found footage"
shp711 March 2016
I wish the producers of this movie had spend some money on a focus group or test audience. There were about 20 people in the audience when the movie started, I looked around about 10-15 minutes before the movie was over and only 10-11 people stayed to see the end. The monster aliens were pretty good but the story must have been written by a person who was high on weed and thought it was interesting. IT WASN'T!! Movies in Memphis, Tennessee are still around $10, so paying $16 for this heap added injury to insult. If you love a good movie, go see one. Just make sure this one is not on your list. My kids laugh at me because I like every movie we go to. I'm not hard to please. So, I'd like to be more specific, but I just can't find anything good to say about this waste of time. Don't waste yours.

It had been a while since I watched a good FF movie
Strobenz11 October 2015
I'll begin by saying that I love found footage movies, although most of them are quite disappointing at some point. However, there's fairly good examples of this genre, such as The Phoenix Incident.

As the title denotes, this film is based on the Phoenix Lights, the biggest UFO sighting in the USA that took place in 1997. I am a fan of the sighting myself, so when I learned what this movie was about I just had to watch it. It was a pleasant surprise! I love how they mixed the real story, with real footage and real news coverage with the fictional story, which is about the disappearance of four men the exact same night the Phoenix Lights took place.

The faux documentary (mockumentary) stile really suits this movie because it kind of makes it feel like it actually happened and we are watching real footage of an alien encounter. Towards the end of the film everything gets a little too repetitive, and for someone who has already seen plenty of found footage movies, this one offers nothing new to the genre. That's why I give it a 6 out of 10. The acting is good though, the special effects are really well worked and the music helps the atmosphere! I don't know, I really liked this movie and I totally recommend it to anyone who's interested either in UFO related stuff or found footage films!

Another potential sighting shot down by shoddy visual
quincytheodore28 October 2015
The Phoenix Incident starts off nicely, inspired by actual phenomena and using mockumentary approach to cover the issue. Characters, both from recording and supposed interviews, are relatively convincing. This is one of the better groups seen in found footage genre that audience can easily invest on. Unfortunately, persisting problem of jerky cam, cumbersome editing and frantic off screen view are dominant. One or two might be bearable, but the culmination of them all eventually hampers the movie.

This mockumentary is a collection of tapes surrounding the event of alleged alien or UFO sighting back in 1997. It follows the group of young men as its main plot and then displays the accounts reflecting back to the fated night as well as possible cover up. Most cast of this type are random journalists or awkward family, this one has better on-screen characters, at least before the screaming and blabbering start.

They seem believable as a group of friends, they may fumble with occasional juvenile antic, but a decent cast goes a long way to give a sense of realism, which is the goal of found footage genre. The interview scenes also present air of seriousness, be it may the whistleblowing dialogue or the eyewitnesses accounts.

However, the transition is poor and the camera work is abysmal. For guys whose hobby is filming, these on-screen characters are not handy with camera. This shaky cam can be disruptive, especially towards the latter half where the events are revealed. The movie shows some special effects, presentable yet only a few seconds each.

The movie shows promise early on, but just like many before it, the intrusive shaky cam and awful editing ruin it.

found footage film
jessejamesjrjr18 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a found footage film, so adjust your expectation accordingly. it's low budget, but they do what they can with what they have. it's at least better then the countless found footage horror films out there. At least this is more in the sci if genre, which makes it already stand out. That, and the fact that it's based on a true story helps. Even though we have still to get a official explanation to what the lights above the city where.I mean there's a official explanation, but it's far from the truth. Hopefully this film will at least open up discussion on the topic, if nothing else then to entertain you for a couple of hours.

Well......................
iaminvisible-4994225 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was going to be good. Picture this, aliens are chasing you to kill you so you shine a touch everywhere and make lots of noise. Go figure. And this, there's UFO's in the sky so you ignore them and talk amongst yourselves incorrectly identifying a fighter plane. Go figure. And this, your host turns all the power off inside and out and instead of pitch black, you get bright lights coming through your doors and windows. And this, the helicopter that comes to save you, just hovers above your head looking at you until it finally gets zapped for being a waste of time. And, what exactly was this movie for? It says based on true events, yet.......enough already, I'm wasting my keys typing this.

This was a good one.
LiamBlackburn8 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This was a good one. Haven't seen a good UFO movie in a while. I like the way they mingled the real story with the movie story line. The acting was good. The aliens were'nt that interesting, but they weren't silly or anything. The alien ships were really good, and the scenes with the fighter jets flying over the desert and helicopters were really good. This movie could easily fly under the radar. The execution of the complex scenes was done really well. People need to respect this movie. It wasn't a full-fledge FF but it still worked the way they made it. They also included actual footage which was cool. 8/10 on a FF horror movie rating.

Phoenix incidents
milagros-9866626 March 2016
I can't believe the way this movie went. It started pretty good and then he ruin by bringing Hollywood into it. It would have been better as a documentary and letting the audience decide for themselves. This was a waste of my time and a put down to what happen in 1997. It just made laughing stock to the people that actually saw it. I would suggest you spend sometimes in Estrella Mountains so you can see for yourself what is going on there.

For someone that said in the interview you believe in UFO, you did nothing for this movie. Next time try to stay on the story and don't let your Hollywood side make a true story into a joke

Typical mythical nonsense
jimmycartner1 February 2016
As soon as this started it was like all those other "true life incidents??" This showed 1 guy who was a super hero and wanted to rescue pilot of a downed F15 but it was an alien craft? WELL! No it wasn't it was nothing the incident never happened this is as far as I got with this as it is the same junk as Blair witch project and all the other Myths of same type of movie/documentary and complete nonsense? However I do suppose there is always one idiot in a group who thinks he is a super hero? I mean come on they run towards a wrecked alien space craft armed with a FLASHLIGHT? The interviews were very poor also as I have never seen colour footage of people being interrogated in a Jail? They do try to make this believable but Fail miserably.

Don't Waste Your Time
kahnwiley-839-49608119 November 2020
I came upon this movie from some stupid "top ten" list. At this point it boggles my mind how this poorly-conceived and -orchestrated red herring would be on a "top ten" list for anything. It's an uninspired "found footage" film from a time when "found footage" was about five years' out of vogue, but it can't even stay true to that style choice as the viewer is constantly presented with novel camera angles which defy explanation or stretch the bounds of belief. For instance, the camcorder strapped to a helmet as a 1997 stand-in for a go-pro, or the helicopter cam on a helicopter which blows up (for entirely unclear reasons)--not the only instance in this film where ostensibly destroyed or unavailable (e.g. classified) footage is simply spliced in with no explanation given. Unbelievable on many levels. Not to mention that the end result is entirely unimpressive and indecipherable anyways, leading one to believe that they actually did film this entire thing with a cheap 90's camcorder strapped to a helmet perched atop a drunken chimpanzee. This film manages to hit all the familiar cliches while simultaneously eschewing any semblance of a meaningful/logical plot. The dialogue is repetitive and unconvincing, the characters are one-dimensional at best, and their portrayal substitutes screaming for actual emoting. This is one of those films that suffers from a pronounced overabundance of characters yelling "go, go, go"-type lines during action sequences. Which I suppose is to fill in for the fact that you won't be able to tell who is where or what is happening for like 90% of these sequences thanks to the shaky and blurry camera work--those prone to seasickness should not board this cinematic titanic. All-around, one of the worst films I've seen in awhile. I would recommend it to folks looking for a film slightly better than a Tommy Wiseau production--but only ever so slightly. This film is a perfect candidate for MST3K-style riffing.

Great Special Effects With No Direction
jegd-847-63140720 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The found footage trope is an overused plot device. I'm biased against shaky camera nonsense, simply because it can (and would be) digitally repaired. Anyone can create a fixed-point to line up the camera motion frame-by-frame using a home computer; There's an example of this somewhere on Youtube using the movie 'Cloverfield'.

I loved the creature effects in this film. George Loucas did a fantastic job. I wish he would replace whoever does the crappy CGI for SYFY originals. The aliens looked great. The overhead dog-fight with the UFO was great. Even the silly way the UFO crashed worked for me because (at least) it looked something actually hit ground. I enjoyed the visuals so much that I wish it were most of the movie.

The actors were great and very believable at the start. I thought this was a real home video edited into the movie. But towards the alien contact it became apparent that they weren't receiving direction. They were improvising their reactions and lines during the chase scene & before the abduction. It went from believable to totally fake with one sundown.

One con of this film is the use of real footage to create a documentary appearance. It was way too random and unsorted. It needed smother editing - for instance; we're watching the action unfold, it cuts away to a news reel, then back to the action and again to a news reel. A 101 course in how to make a documentary would have worked here.

The news and interview were just to fill time, because there was only enough "found footage" for a short film. Time fillers are easy though; Doesn't this director know you can stretch moments with a black screen, heavy breathing and a little suspense? The "less is more" type of film-making that was used in (say) 'Jaws' that Spielberg created whenever the shark was broken.

It's a 6 out of 10 for me. I'd still recommend it for the FX and some of the acting. The plot itself was based on the real life "Phoenix Lights" event, but there's no real dialogue here, zero direction and basically it plays out like those scenes in a video game you want to skip through. Even on a cheap budget this could have been a great collector for the UFO enthusiasts. This is purely directorial failure.

watch it for the legit history, but be prepared for improbability
jeanshop4 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't realize that this film meant to be combining fiction with fact, until I found myself asking" they're all supposed to be running away from this alien, but someone is still filming everything? Yeah, it seemed odd that the camera was always on, no matter what action was happening. So, it's like a "reality show". And when I saw the same alien as what they had on the movie "Alien", I realized, oh boy, I've been taken.

I still believe that the government/military complex has had a plan to deceive the public using "aliens".

It is not atrocious.
Otkon28 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Does it have a plot? No.

Does it make a lick of sense as a found footage film? No.

Do they explain where the lady friend went? Maybe. I probably wasn't paying attention.

But the effects are decent for a movie of its budget. And of course the acting is good with the cast being a bunch of friends known for their voices in cartoons and video games. And they are having a lot of stupid fun playing make-believe in the desert.

So yeah, it's about lights in the Arizona sky. And some ATVs. And frat bro banter from guys in the 30s. But they play it fairly dumb and it gets them into a big mess.

Poor Liam though. Those aliens really wanted him on their table first - if you know what I mean. And who could blame them. He's always the vulnerably sweet type so prone to getting hurt. He just needs TLC and to not be put right by the window! First rule: Liam must be protected!

Anyway. The aliens win. The government hushes it up. Somewhere on the mothership, Liam needs a hug.

Not a fan, but cool creatures
PedroPires9024 August 2022
In fact, the best thing about this is the creature design and the spaceships design, like both of it. Seemed cool, realistic and scary.

Most of the rest was boring and repetitive, with stupid characters and boring and predictable conversations simulating a documentary.

The Phoenix incident makes you question the nights events.
gothamschild26 April 2016
For anyone interested in UFOLOGY its a safe bet to say you have heard or know of The Phoenix lights-the night strange lights and Black flying triangles were seen by the residents of Phoenix in Arizona. What makes this case unique is the number of witness's. The HOLE of Phoenix.

Keith Arem's film is unique in the found found footage genre in that it mixes fact with fiction and actors with real witnesses.

The story centres around four friends who, after being drooped of in the desert,go quad biking. They inadvertently stumble upon a dog fight between a flying triangle and USAF jets, who manage to shoot it down.Naturally they go and investigate. Now the reason I have I given this film full marks is because the story doesn't suggest-or even ask you to believe what happens next was real-it makes you question what happened that night and exposes the length the authorities went to cover up and ridicules the situation. Found footage films can either be excellent or truly awful-there is no other way this film could be done and it works a treat.Sometimes its hard to not think "Oh come on,you've just been through what ever the situation was and your STILL holding the camera?!" But Keith managed to work his way round this in a perfectly sensible way.

If you want to learn about the incident this film will help and if,like me,you start googling things after then its succeeded in not only entertaining you but also educating you at the same time.

A pleasant surprise in a dicey genre
I_Ailurophile23 July 2021
I had mixed to low expectations based on past experience with the genre at hand, and what word of mouth I'd previously gathered. Still, given the chance, I couldn't resist the temptation to check out 'The Phoenix Incident.' I'm surprised to find myself thinking it's considerably better than I anticipated.

We stumble onto movies in different ways. Advertisements and recommendations by friends or family are most common, but often we'll look to movies based on the film-makers or actors involved. For me, it was the delight of seeing voice actors Liam O'Brien, Travis Willingham, Yuri Lowenthal, and Troy Baker in a live action film. Concern as to content or quality is secondary.

'The Phoenix Incident' is a sci-fi thriller about extraterrestrial contact, taking the form of a "found footage" feature. This picture takes the concept a step further and has the appearance of an independent documentary examining the titular event, including "raw video" filmed by four friends who disappeared during the occurrence. The narrative, such as it is, is considerably more loose and scattered as a result than in other films of this niche genre. It's an intriguing approach, though also a tad more difficult to engage with.

It's worth mentioning the advance viral marketing scheme employed by writer-director Keith Arem, also no stranger to voice work given the number of videogames he's been involved with. The extent of Arem's endeavor is noteworthy - not just to promote 'The Phoenix Incident,' but to make it seem more real and plausible. So how is it? Was the effort worthwhile?

With content partly split between documentary interviews and the crucial "found footage," characterizations seem sparsely written - everyone only has so much time on screen, after all. The primary cast of O'Brien, Willingham, Lowenthal, and Baker are given characters with root personalities that are subsumed by heightened fear and panic as the action kicks up and the friends' video takes center stage. While I can't speak for other individuals appearing on camera, I know these four are all very capable actors, and they do what they can with what roles they are given. Everyone involved is fine. I feel like that's just the nature of features like this.

Special effects seem reasonably good, with explosions, UFOs, and blood feeling as real as they could be. Of what we see of the aliens, they too appear seamless, and a believable part of the world. I appreciate that Arem concocted a creature design that seems based on non-human animals on Earth, taken to another level. Sound is solid, and lighting, too. While composer John Paesano makes unfortunate use of the ubiquitous "BWAHM!" sound cue popularized by 'Inception,' his score is otherwise quite satisfactory, mostly unobtrusive and lending a marginally sorrowful, desperate atmosphere to the picture.

The plot of the film is slight, padded out by the the style in which it's told. Yet I think 'The Phoenix Incident' is written fairly well. It's not as cohesive as more focused found footage films I've seen, but also more clever and calculated than many that play in a similar space. I've seen better; I've also seen worse.

I hardly think this is a movie that's essential viewing, unless perhaps you're a great fan of the cast. But for a niche genre renowned for subpar schlock, flimsy film-making, and plenty of otherwise dubious pictures, this is one that's a bit more inventive in its construction. It's sufficiently engaging - entertaining - and ultimately enjoyable enough that it bests the expectations I had. It's not perfect or the end-all-be-all of sci-fi movies, but 'The Phoenix Incident' is a worthwhile view if you come across it.

Purposely could not afford a steady camera so you will have to take your Dramamine before watching it never gets better.

A bunch of sound bites and inferences (did it? Could it? Is it? Etc.)

The filming locations are: Phoenix, Arizona, USA (Sighting Location) Los Angeles, California, USA (Family Interviews)

It is all actors (no name actors) pretending to be people.

Even the credits do not give up in the end. If you have information regarding this case, please contact - xxx.
