In 1999, Tom Hanks starred in The Green Mile based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The narrative followed the journey of a death row prison guard during the Great Depression who witnesses supernatural events after the entry of a convict played by Michael Clarke Duncan.

The film also benefited from a disturbingly brilliant performance from Sam Rockwell who played the role of William ‘Wild Bill’ Wharton, one of the most difficult and uncontrollable prisoners in the facility. The Oscar winner’s unhinged portrayal of a challenging character was interestingly inspired from the iconic performance of Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice.
Sam Rockwell Took Inspiration From Michael Keaton For This Memorable Role
Apart from excellent performances by Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile, Sam Rockwell who played William ‘Wild Bill’ Wharton in the film, was a standout among the ensemble.

Doug Bradley may be best known for playing Pinhead in the Hellraiser franchise, but now he will take on the villain who set one of DC’s greatest heroes on his path — Joe Chill. Doug Bradley will play the character in episode six of Gotham Knights on The CW. Joe Chill has spent fifty years rotting on death row, but with his execution finally scheduled, the notorious “Patron Saint of Bad Guys” isn’t about to let his secrets die with him.
“When casting the iconic role of Joe Chill, arguably the man who created Batman, there was only one name we considered … Doug Bradley,” reads a statement from Gotham Knights producers Natalie Abrams, Chad Fiveash, and James Stoteraux. “We needed an actor with the kind of gravitas that would do justice to such a seminal character in DC Comics canon. The opening of Irvin Kershner's 1980 film "The Empire Strikes Back" didn't leave viewers with must cause for hope. The ending of its predecessor "Star Wars" saw the evil Empire more or less destroyed. A brave cadre of scrappy rebels had gathered in a team of battle crafts to attack and destroy the moon-sized Death Star, a powerful weapon that could destroy an entire planet with one laser blast. With the Death Star destroyed, it appeared that the Good Guys won and the Bad Guys were vanquished.
"The Empire Strikes Back" revealed that the Empire was very much still alive, and was now seeking retribution. The Rebels had taken to hiding out on a remote, frozen world called Hoth, populated only by two-legged beasts of burden and the occasional yeti. The underground rebels' base, however, was almost immediately located by the Empire, and the villains commenced a forward military assault on it.

It’s Labor Day weekend, more than three months after “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount) rose to #1 in theaters over Memorial Day weekend, and it’s #1 again thanks to no competition and the September 5 boost of 3 tickets for National Cinema Day.
As for those who didn’t go to theaters, plenty of them selected “Maverick” at 19.99 to download and view at home. It spent the second of what will be likely many weeks atop all VOD charts.
Five of this weekend’s box office top 10 titles are also available on VOD. Also arriving this week are box-office leaders “Beast” (Universal) and “Thor: Love and Thunder” (Disney). “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony), now available as as a lower-cost title, didn’t pop up.
Apart from “Maverick,” the charts again prove a big get for Universal. They own 14 of the 30 slots, including five of the #2 and #3 positions. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (now...

The unofficial final weekend of the summer box office came in with a total of 91.5 million, 6.2 million below last weekend, making it the weakest since May. The bad news is that this will likely be the best weekend until mid-to-late October. While the next few months may have a couple sleeper hits, the slate for the remainder of August and September is the weakest since early Spring 2021, before the semi-post-Covid “reopening” in the summer. The strength of the holdovers should keep the overall box office at decent levels for a few more weeks, but we may soon see the lowest overall weekend numbers since before Summer 2021.
For now, though, the box office engines are still chugging, and around one-third of the weekend’s overall gross came from Sony’s Bullet Train, which is the season’s last big film. The Brad Pitt starring action-thriller opened to 30.1 million from 4,357 theaters, right on track with expectations.

July is at a close, and a look back on the month and a look forward at the months ahead gives a mixed portrait of the box office. The total box office for July came to roughly 1.13 billion, making it the first month to gross over 1 billion since December 2019 and not far behind a typical summer month from before the pandemic. This should be seen as a positive sign for the box office as a whole, even though the summer came down from its peak much faster than usual, with the last major blockbuster being Thor: Love and Thunder which opened three weekends ago. While a solid slate continued with Nope last weekend, DC League of Super-Pets this weekend, and Bullet Train next weekend, after that we may not see a film with real hit potential until October. Following next weekend, we’re looking at perhaps the lowest grossing two...

Tuesday Am Update: The Tom Cruise Paramount/Skydance sequel goes to an even higher stratosphere with a 4-day 160.5M Memorial Day opening record. Global is at a 300M start. Important to note that given the whole thing of rolling the 13.2M Thursday previews of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End into its opening weekend, that movie still has the 3-day over Memorial Day weekend with 127.97M to Top Gun: Maverick‘s 126.7M.
Monday Am Update: Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick has beaten Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End fair and square for the Memorial Day opening 4-day record (+ previews) at the domestic box office with 156M. While easily Tom Cruise’s best opening of all-time, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is the common denominator of the two largest Memorial Day weekend openings at the domestic box office.

It was a Memorial Day weekend for the ages as Tom Cruise returned with his first movie in four years. That movie was “Top Gun: Maverick,” and it brought back his character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from 1986’s blockbuster hit “Top Gun.” Clearly, audiences were excited for Cruise to return to this role, since because “Top Gun: Maverick” not only became Cruise’s biggest opening ever but also set a record for the four-day Memorial Day box office.
If you read this past week’s weekend preview, you already know that “Top Gun: Maverick” got excellent reviews after playing at CinemaCon and Cannes. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were only part of the story, as it performed even better among audiences with 99 recommending it, as well as the movie receiving an extremely rare “A+” CinemaScore.

After 36 years, Tom Cruise’s daredevil Navy flyboy Pete Mitchell apparently still felt the need…the need for speed. And so, too, did nostalgic moviegoers who flooded the nation’s multiplexes over Memorial Day weekend to propel the star’s long-delayed sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, into the box-office stratosphere with a 124 million domestic haul between Friday and Sunday. When Monday’s receipts are factored in, look for that total to climb to 151 million—making the Paramount sequel the strongest debut of Cruise’s storied career by far. Meanwhile, 20th Century Studios’ The Bob’s Burgers Movie bowed over the holiday frame in third place with 12.6 million.

After a rare week when no Sony Pictures VOD release ranked #1 on any of the charts, the studio leads on all three. “Morbius” (19.99) topped Vudu, which favors higher-priced PVODs with ranking by revenue, while “Uncharted” (5.99), took #1 at the volume-driven iTunes and Google Play.
The “Spider-Man” offshoot (and second sequel to “Venom”) was lackluster in theaters compared to expectations (it did 73 million domestic/163 million worldwide). But with an 80 million production cost, it still has a shot of making a profit from post-theatrical returns.
Of note is that again Sony, despite the quick burnout of “Morbius” in theaters, went with a 45 days+ window. That is less of a wait than “Uncharted” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (5.99). Their patience has had its awards. Not only is “Uncharted” sustaining a long and elevated run, “No Way” also remains on the chart more than two months after its initial home release.

Three weeks into the summer movie season, and we’re still not quite back up to the box office of summers past, although Marvel Studios’ latest hit, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” continues to run rampant with its third week at #1.
Down 49 from last week, the Benedict Cumberbatch starrer added another 31.6 million this weekend after becoming the second movie this year to cross the 300 million mark. It has now grossed 342 million in three weekends, which puts it just 25 million away from surpassing Warner Bros’ “The Batman” as the year’s highest-grossing movie. Marvel’s latest grossed another 40 million overseas this weekend putting its global total over the 800 million mark.
The big new release of the weekend was Focus Features’ “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” bringing back all the characters from the popular ITV/PBS series, but even with strong reviews at 85 on Rotten Tomatoes, it failed to find the success of its 2019 predecessor.

Three new recent theatrical releases, two of which have grossed over 50 million, all of which were in this weekend’s theatrical Top Ten, share the #1 VOD chart spots among the listings we follow. This rare split is accompanied by another never before seen occurrence that may never happen again.
“The Lost City” (Paramount), “The Northman” (Focus), and “The Bad Guys” (Universal), all available to see for 19.99, split up the top spot. That’s unusual. But what is unprecedented is that only 11 films — one more than the bare minimum — made the charts. And the odd film in did so because of one site’s 0.99 promotion.
The three new releases pushed Sony out of the top spot after two months. Since mid-March, either “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Uncharted,” both now 5.99, have led all charts except for one week at one site.
Sony could easily top one or more chart again next week.

After nearly two weeks of play, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Disney) sits at 688 million worldwide. It is headed to around 1 billion ultimately in theaters, a fine achievement, more so for a Marvel entry that clearly has not achieved the level of satisfaction that top entries like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” did.
The biggest opening of the year has hit its mark, but won’t exceed it. A 67 percent second weekend domestic drop, at the high end for comic book blockbusters, assures that. With 292 million in, look for it to easily surpass “The Batman,” currently at 369 million in U.S./Canada returns.
…but only because it opened with 52 million more than the D.C. Comics’ hit. Matt Reeves’ blockbuster made 66.5 million its second weekend, off 50 percent. Among recent start-of-summer Marvel releases, the drop has been within a lower, steady range of 55 to 59 percent. Last December, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” also fell 67 percent,...

Sony ruled for another week as “Uncharted” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (both 19.99) each had #1 showings: The video game adaptation is #1 at iTunes and Vudu, while the massive Marvel hit took top spot at Google Play.
This reinforces the strategic wisdom of two Sony decisions: the extended theatrical window for both films (far longer than the now-standard 45 days) and relying on PVOD rather than the increasingly costly and competitive realm of in-house streaming. It also maintains flexibility, with the Marvel underachiever “Morbius” arriving on PVOD release May 17. Sony seems to key its releases to when theatrical viability wanes.
Tomorrow will see “The Lost City” (Paramount/19.99) on PVOD and Paramount+. As with “The Batman,” the studio’s PR announcement pushed streaming. The Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum romantic adventure could make the 100 million domestic mark (94 million through the weekend), which can deotermine film rental settlements with theaters.

Cinema box office in China fell back to the lower depths over the weekend, with just 8.9 million of revenue across a country of 1.3 billion inhabitants.
Business continues to be badly hit by Covid-related closures as the disease shows signs of spread around the country, while slowly diminishing in Shanghai where there was a full lockdown that lasted many weeks.
Business appeared to spike upwards a week earlier, driven by the May Day holiday. But Chinese state media reports that the Sunday to Wednesday May day period was down 82 compared with last year.
The latest weekend box office total (Friday to Sunday) was the second lowest this year. And the year-to-date total has stalled at 2.25 billion, according to data from the Artisan Gateway distribution and exhibition consultancy. That is 34 behind the equivalent 2021 total.
In cinemas, hit U.S. animation “The Bad Guys” and Chinese drama “Stay With Me” exchanged positions at the top of the chart.

It’s May and the summer box office season has kicked into gear with Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Xochitl Gomez, being the first major release of said season.
Opening in 4,534 theaters, the seventh-widest domestic release ever, Marvel Studios’ first non-Spider-Man sequel since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” burst into the weekend with 36 million in Thursday previews, only 3 million less than “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2018, but with the benefit of having showings starting at 3pm. That’s significantly lower than the 60 million in Thursday previews made a year later by “Avengers: Endgame” and the 50 million Thursday previews for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” this past December.
Doctor Strange’s sequel ended up grossing an estimated 90 million on Friday, which is more on its opening day than all three of Marvel’s 2021 movies (not including “No Way Home”) made their opening weekends.

Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness racked up $36M from previews that began at 3Pm. That’s the 2nd best preview during the pandemic after Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s $50M back in December. Overall, it’s the eighth largest preview performance ever, ranking behind Avengers: Infinity War‘s $39M in 2018.
The Sam Raimi directed movie debuts in 4,534 theaters, making it the 7th widest opening footprint ever. As is typical with any Marvel movie, the question is how frontloaded Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is. Industry expectations are at least $160M. Anyway you cut it, that’s the biggest opening for Disney during the pandemic, besting Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings (75.3M), and for exhibition it’s a great sign that the summer box office is off to a fantastic start.

CinemaCon launches Monday at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the second in-person gathering of theater owners and Hollywood studios since August, and Covid. That edition was shadowed by the Delta Variant, ongoing theater closures and shifting release dates. Now the picture is significantly brighter. Domestic attendance at the confab, including a full complement of studio heads, is at a pre-pandemic level (international still a bit softer given challenges in some markets). Moviegoing is on the rise and the release sked looks full and fixed. NATO President & CEO John Fithian and MPA Chairman-ceo Charles Rivkin fielded questions from Deadline on the evolving post-Covid landscape and relationship between the two camps. (Some responses are condensed and edited for clarity.)
Deadline: Compare last CinemaCon to what you anticipate this coming week. What’s changed in the studio/exhibition ecosystem?
Fithian: This show comes at a really important and historic time in our business.

As exhibitors gather in Las Vegas for their annual CinemaCon convention this week, this weekend’s box office will provide their rallies with optimism. It fell short of 100 million, but there’s a few talking points to battle the concern that theaters are too franchise dependent.
It also provided a case study in balance: Four films grossed over 10 million, a one-unremarkable statistic. However, this weekend was the first instance in more than two years.
DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” (Universal) topped this weekend, placing #1 at a better-than-expected 24 million. Family films often do well, but this performance came in the face of Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” sequel and Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.”
Two more original titles debuted with “The Northman” (Focus) and “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” (Lionsgate). Robert Eggers’ Viking epic came in at 12 million, while the very meta Nicolas Cage-as-Nicolas Cage action comedy made over 7 million.

Filmmaker Robert Eggers broke through with back-to-back horror films “The Witch” (2015) and “The Lighthouse” (2019), both marked by shocking moments of violence and intimate, claustrophobic tension. He expands his scope — not to mention his budget — with “The Northman,” which opened on April 22 and dramatizes the medieval Scandinavian legend that was the direct inspiration for William Shakespeare‘s “Hamlet.” But is it that same level of legendary?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 83 based on 49 reviews counted: 42 positive and seven mixed, but none outright negative. Twelve of those positive reviews score the film a perfect 100. On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews only as positive or negative, the film is rated 88 fresh based on 220 reviews, which means only 26 of those critics gave it a thumbs down. The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus says, “A bloody revenge epic and breathtaking visual marvel, ‘The Northman’ finds filmmaker Robert Eggers expanding his...

There’s a classic sound to heist films, especially of the ’60s and ’70s – a little jazzy, a little stealthy, occasionally raucous and wild – and composer Daniel Pemberton cleverly channels it throughout “The Bad Guys,” the DreamWorks Animation action comedy that opens today.
“The film in some ways is an homage to classic caper movies,” says the English composer, “and it’s a world I really love playing in. You get to be really bold: big breaks, big brass sections, big tunes and big grooves.”
Pemberton’s high-energy music sets the mood and drives the action in Pierre Perifel’s animated adventure about a notorious criminal gang that considers going straight after they cross paths with a guinea-pig philanthropist and their red-fox governor.
“At its core, it’s a very joyous score, even though there’s sneakiness, tension, all that kind of stuff,” he notes. He cites Quincy Jones’ “The Italian Job,...

“The Bad Guys” are here.
Based on the book series by Australian author Aaron Blabey, DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” follows a group of animal criminals – Mr. Wolf aka the Big Bad Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos) — as they try to turn the corner and become (gasp!) good guys.
Director Pierre Perifel brings a wonderfully offbeat sensibility to the movie, which could have been another villain-goes-straight animated fable, of which there have been plenty. By folding in a range of influences (everything from anime to Steven Soderbergh) and upping the stylization to incorporate more 2D flourishes, “The Bad Guys” feels wholly unique and might be the most enjoyable DreamWorks Animation film since “How to Train Your Dragon” back in 2010.

After two weekends in which sequels topped the box office charts, theaters will see three non-franchise films hit theaters in what will be a big test to see if original films can still find an audience in theaters. For families, Universal and DreamWorks Animation will send in “The Bad Guys,” an adaptation of Aaron Blabey’s graphic novel series about a group of animal thieves who try to turn over a new leaf. Mature audiences will have two wholly original offerings: Lionsgate’s meta comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” starring Nicolas Cage and Focus Features’ bloody Viking revenge epic “The Northman.” All three films have received strong reviews from critics, with “Massive Talent” and “Bad Guys” each currently standing at 93 on Rotten Tomatoes while “Northman” has 89 at time of writing. But the pre-release buzz and projections have been low, with “Bad Guys” tracking for a start in the mid-teens,...

Is it truly a marketplace for branded tentpoles and uber low-budget fare at the box office as the pandemic eases? And is everything in between just future programming for a streamer?

It is quite surprising that the big animation studios have not picked up on and adapted Australian author Aaron Blabey’s series of children’s illustrated books The Bad Guys long before now, because it centres on a gang of anthropomorphic animals known as the Bad Guys who try to do good deeds to change society’s perception of them as scary criminals that usually fail. The material is ready-made, big-screen gold – and a genius one at that.
Thanks to French animator and director Pierre Perifel we now have The Bad Guys, the movie that not only gives a faithful nod to the sketchy animated style of the books, but also as offers oodles of fun, a brilliant dynamic group of characters based on animals, reptiles and fish that we all naturally fear, plus endless points for family discussion post viewing, including the dangers and damage of societal labelling on first impressions.

Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina are among the voices of a ragtag bunch of animal thieves in a derivative yet enjoyable Ocean’s 11-lite
This is Tarantino for ankle-biters with a bit of Ocean’s 11 thrown in: funny, energetic and just smart enough. It’s an animated caper from DreamWorks about a gang of career criminals, crewed by five of the animal kingdom’s worst of the worst: a wolf, shark, snake, piranha and tarantula. Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen, adapting the kids’ books by Aaron Blabey, gives us some tongue-in-cheek comedy, though perhaps not quite enough originality to make it actually memorable.
Leader of the Bad Guys is smooth-talking Mr Wolf. After a series of front-page heists, the Bad Guys are caught red-handed trying to steal a gold statue being awarded to a philanthropic guinea pig. He’s Professor Marmalade, a wet do-gooder beautifully played with a passive-aggressive whine by Richard Ayoade.

From the studio that brought us Z Nation, Black Summer returns for a second outing. Rose, Sun, Spears, and Lance are back, with a few new faces making regular appearances.
Starting with the brutal killing of a fan favorite, Black Summer Season Two didn't come to play around.
Major spoilers for Black Summer Season 2 ahead! Read at your own risk!
Did I say Lance was back? Sorry. He's only back for a few minutes.
Black Summer ruthlessly started the season by killing off fan-favorite character Lance.
Of course, it's a zombie show, so he immediately turns into a zombie and starts terrorizing the man that killed him. Luckily, Zombie Lance got revenge, but the adrenaline started strong this season and never stopped.
Many things from season one were very similar: shacky cam, uncomfortable close-ups, and difficult situations.
But, despite the name of the show, these eight episodes were not set during the summer.
