The Incredible Marrec sees a fisherman returning near empty handed and being greeted with a little less than respect by a young boy on the dock. Keen to remind the boy that he is bigger than his last catch, Marrec relates to him the story of the time he was tipped off his boat and was held underwater by an anchor, with fighting off sharks with his fists only being the first of his problems.
Another impressive piece of animation from French school ESMA, and impressive not just because of the quality of the graphics but moreso for the content. Here we have a tall tale told by an old fisherman. At first it is quite comic as he adds details as he goes to plug the plot holes pointed out by the young listener, however in the second half it moves beyond this to deliver more of a fluid action sequence full of dramatic music and action. Both sides of the film work very well and are engaging and entertaining in what they do. The story and characters have good humor and fun as well as the film having a good sense for what works in the context of the scene. Visually it is impressive with a high standard of animation and creation, particularly in the second half of the tall tale.
Technically the film is what I am coming to expect from final year projects from ESMA, however beyond this it is the humor and inventiveness of the film that makes it worth seeing.
