The Jesus Mysteries both challenged my views and taught me more about Christianity

Warning: Spoilers
All the schools I've attended have been Christian. I remember when I was six years old, our school performed a play of the nativity scene, birth of Jesus Christ. It was performed during the Christmas season and was displayed as a warm and fairytale-like story. Every week we would also have assemblies where we would sing different hymns in reverence to the Son of God. At the time, I always saw Jesus as a miraculous person whose life was full of goodness, love and joy. As I grew older and I learned more about Christianity however, my view in the fairy-tale like story of Jesus Christ changed. The movie displays of mysteries, such as the nativity scene, further deepened my change in view of Jesus as it continues to shows the reality of his life. Jesus's life was nothing like a fairy-tale, instead it comprised of injustice, violence and prejudice. The often gruel events were accurately presented in this movie, including the Slaughter of the Innocents, outcasting people from society, Jesus's crucifixion and many more.

In addition to changing my views about Christianity, the movie also taught me even more about the religion. To be completely honest, I didn't know much about Christianity and Jesus's role in the first place, but the movie approached things in a step-by-step, unbiased way that helped me understand. This approach on Christian beliefs is what makes the movie so effective to a wide platform of audiences. For this reason, I deeply recommend this book to anyone, ranging from beginners of Christian studies to practicing Christians who are simply curious and want to watch an interesting, suspenseful film.

I rate this movie a 10/10 However, the title, "The Jesus Mysteries" can be a little deceiving as most of the mysteries shown are not necessarily about Jesus

A brief summary/description of the movie

After watching this documentary, I was highly intrigued and surprised by the information presented in the video. Previously, I had very little background on the the life of Jesus itself, let alone the mysteries of Jesus. This video has educated me on the misconceptions and uncertainty of Jesus's life and has left my mind pondering.

The directors, David Evans and James Hardy did a spectacular job composing the whole film and including events from every stage of Jesus's life. One thing that stood out to me was that they kept the audience entertained and attracted to the content. Every mystery was in chronological order, which helped the movie flow smoothly. The background and setting elements were also a bonus as they were pertinent to the time period and society presented.

The scene/mystery that that was the most fascinating in my opinion was the one of Veronica's Veil. The story was of a woman who was said to have a veil with the imprint of Jesus's face on it. The veil traveled around, which left the public uncertain of whether or not the real one was destroyed or is still around. Maybe it was because I had never heard of such a tale before, or that the directors presented the scene extremely well, but I know that whatever it was, it was the most eye-grabbing part of the entire movie. I was also very surprised to have found out that in todays time, the veil is still annually shown at its current home, in Manoppello.

All in all, this movie was exceptionally informative and included mysteries that were never presented before, in a depth of detail. Surely, there are more mysteries to Jesus's life, but I think that this movie focused more on the more important and prominent ones.

Warning: Spoilers
The Jesus Mysteries was made by National Geographic, and released on April 19th, 2014. It was directed by David Caldwell Evans and Justin Hardy. In this new National Geographic documentary, we were able to uncover different mysteries that surrounded the life of Jesus. Jesus is a very controversial person, and most of his life is a mystery itself. But, this documentary shows not only the famous mysteries such as the life of Mary Magdalene, The Veil of Veronica, and the miracles, but also the more unknown mysteries.

The Jesus Mysteries uncovers seven mysteries: The nativity, St. Peter, Mary Magdalene, The Veil of Veronica, Jesus in England and the miracles. National Geographic were certainly able to capture their audience's attention, while teaching them at the same time. My personal favorite uncovering of the mysteries were the nativity, St. Peter, Mary Magdalene and the Veil of Veronica. Before the movie, I thought I had a good understanding of the mysteries itself, but this documentary added to my understanding.

The educators who talked about the mysteries were reliable sources as most of them were professors at universities. And the screen writing for the movie managed to keep it interesting all the time. I personally had a hard time looking away from the screen, and sat through the whole two hour documentary with ease. The only critique that I have is that the acting of the actors in the documentary could have been better.

I recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in the mysteries of Christianity and Jesus. Even if you aren't interested at first, after watching this movie, you will want to research more into those mysteries. This movie is rated PG, and I agree with this rating. At some parts, this documentary turns quite "dark" and in a way creepy. I would not recommend watching this documentary with children.

Overall, this was a great documentary, and watching it really opened to my mind to all the mysteries concerning Jesus' life and Christianity itself.
