As confirmed by Deadline today, Jon M. Chu, one of cinema's premiere makers of cinematic musicals, will be adapting the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice operetta "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for Amazon Studios. In addition to directing, Chu will produce the film alongside Scott Sanders, who worked on Chu's adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's and Quiara Alegría Hudes' stage musical "In the Heights," released in 2021.
"Joseph" is an outsize, rock-forward, expressionistic rendition of the Book of Genesis, telling the story of the Coat of Many Colors. In Genesis, Joseph was given said garment by his father, much to the chagrin of his jealous brothers, who began to plot against him. Joseph was thrown into a pit, with one of his more benevolent brothers planning to rescue him later. He was eventually dragged out and sold into slavery. In the Webber/Rice musical, Joseph eventually gets out of bondage...

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

In 1984, a lot of laws about what was and wasn't allowed in children's TV programming began to loosen. Throughout the decade, more and more companies became incredibly brazen about including advertising content directly into their TV shows, transforming many shows into 30-minute commercials for toys. An '80s child would watch a show, knowing they could soon hound their parents to buy them the toy counterparts of their favorite characters. This branding became deeply insidious, and many children of the 1980s grew up with a deep and abiding nostalgia for their favorite toy ads. Artistry, character, writing, storytelling, and mythology were all distant, tertiary concerns during this era, and the bulk of animated shows from the '80s are deeply, deeply terrible as a result.

During the climactic rumble in “West Side Story,” Riff (Mike Faist) spins away from Tony (Ansel Elgort) and right into the knife held by Bernardo (David Alvarez). Everyone is frozen in shock as Riff turns back towards Tony, his face crumpled, looking younger than ever, tears welling up in his eyes. “It’s Ok, it’s Ok,” he tells his Bff. No one would question it if we got an agonizing slow death right then, but instead, Riff smiles, his face morphs into chilling clarity — dead eyes right before he’s about to drop dead — and he coolly (no pun intended) orders Tony to “take it out.” It’s a heart-stopping, devastating beat, played to perfection by Faist, who deserves some Oscar love for putting a new twist on an old character we all thought we knew.

The visceral reaction was almost instant. In 2008, Jon M. Chu was working on his big directorial feature debut Step Up 2: The Streets, when his choreographer Luis Salgado invited him to New York to watch a Broadway musical he was in called In the Heights. “I’d never heard of Lin- Manuel Miranda, but when I saw it, my jaw dropped on the floor,” Chu recalls, “This show spoke so deeply to me, a Chinese from the bay area, not Latino or from Washington Heights, and yet it felt so close to home, because I knew what it was like to be raised by not just your parents, but your aunties, uncles and neighbors.”
A decade later, Chu had the opportunity to pitch Miranda the film adaptation, just as Chu found himself at a crossroads, deciding what kind of storyteller he really wanted to be. Having proven himself as a solid commercial director,...

Twenty years ago, while still students at the University of Southern California, cinematographer Alice Brooks and director Jon M. Chu worked on his thesis short film, “When the Kids Are Away,” a musical honoring motherhood that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2003. That early partnership set the foundation for a creative affinity that has reached its greatest expression to date with “In the Heights,” Chu’s cinematic adaptation of the Latino-centered, Broadway hit penned by storytelling prodigies Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alagría Hudes.
Featuring 30 dancers and filmed in South Pasadena, California, “When the Kids Are Away” required Brooks to use a crane and shut down a street for the first time in her career. Now, two decades later, “In the Heights” showcases scenes with up to 300 dancers; instead of trees in SoCal, the George Washington Bridge frames the NYC spectacle.

In Broadway history, there have been only a handful of musicals that center on U.S. Latinos, and only a fraction of those shows were written by people from the communities they were portraying on stage. That’s part of the reason why Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” made waves when it opened on Broadway back in 2008 (after a successful Off Broadway run). More than a decade later, and after a slight pandemic delay, Jon M. Chu’s cinematic adaptation of Miranda’s first musical promises to make an even bigger splash with its celebration of family, love, and the idea of home.

Every now and then a film comes along with its heart gaudily emblazoned on its sleeve, waggling jazz hands of neediness and plaintively pleading to be loved. A film which shoots for the moon but putters out like a spent firework before it has cleared the treetops. A film like The Prom.
Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman) is a smalltown high school student making a big stand. Or, more accurately, forced to stand up and demand her right to bring the person she loves to the prom, just like everyone else. Emma’s sexual orientation isn’t a problem for her principal Mr Hawkins (Keegan-Michael Key) but the PTA – led by inflexible tiger mom Mrs Greene (Kerry Washington) – would rather cancel prom entirely than embrace inclusivity.
The decision leaves Emma isolated at school and the target of a particularly bitchy clique. Popular cheerleader Alyssa Greene (Ariana DeBose) is the only one to empathise and try,...

Jon M. Chu has only recently begun to accept the success of his groundbreaking 2018 rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians” — although he still can’t enjoy it. The hang-up, he reveals on Variety’s “#Represent: Success Stories,” comes from enduring brutal critical reception for his previous features, including “Jem and the Holograms” in 2015.
“I got torn a new one. Plus, all my movies, I feel like they always get ripped on, from ‘Step Up 2,’ to ‘Step Up 3’ to the [Justin Bieber documentary] — they all get s— on,” the filmmaker says candidly.
The criticism, Chu says, led him to compartmentalize his emotions about box office numbers, critical reception and how he felt about his work as a filmmaker — hence why he still can’t fully relish in the success of “Crazy Rich Asians,” regarded as both a critical and box office win (it’s the highest-grossing romantic comedy since 2009 and was...

Outside of the multi-billion dollar success of the Transformers franchise, feature-length adaptations of Hasbro properties have struggled to gain much traction at the box office. The two G.I. Joe movies both did unspectacular business, Battleship barely managed to turn a profit, and Jem and the Holograms couldn’t even earn back half of its tiny $5 million budget while in theaters.
In fact, their most lucrative venture outside the adventures of the Autobots and Decepticons are the two Ouija movies, but those R-rated horror films owe most of their success to Blumhouse’s business model more than their relation to the Hasbro-trademarked board game that served as the inspiration.
However, that isn’t stopping them from trying, with G.I. Joe set to undergo the reboot treatment yet again as the company tries to figure out a formula for success, with a Snake Eyes spinoff also set for release later this year.

On the eve of March 24th, when Disney+ is expected to expand across the United Kingdom and various parts of Europe, we have compiled the definitive list of new content headed to the streaming platform and its three key competitors – namely Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.
Yes, the so-called ‘streaming wars’ is now being fought on four fronts, and it’s fair to say that, despite being the fresh-faced newcomer, Disney+ is packing serious firepower. Thanks to its carefully calculated acquisitions over the years, the newly-released streaming service is packed to the rafters with top-tier content, including some excellent original series like The Mandalorian.
It’ll also get updated in a few days’ time (as is tradition), what with April 2020 just around the corner. Plus, with countries all over the globe enforcing measures to combat Coronavirus – self-isolation, social distancing… you name it – the Internet’s biggest streaming services will no...

You’ve probably heard the news that we’re all gonna be indoors for a little while. There’s no way around that and it sucks to hear. It also makes the usual entertainment stuff each month seem just a little more poignant. While Netflix reveals its new releases each month as a matter of course, the Netflix new releases for April 2020 obviously have some added import.
Thankfully it looks like Netflix is going to ease our social isolation with some easy-watching originals, and a handful of fun original and existing movie options. There isn’t a Stranger Things-like Netflix juggernaut on the schedule for April but there are excellent, bingeable shows like Nailed It! (April 1), The Innocence Files (April 15), and Kenya Barris’s first Netflix offering #blackAF (April 17).

Before “Hamilton,” there was “In the Heights.” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s debut musical opened on Broadway in March 2008 to rapturous acclaim and 13 Tony Award nominations. The musical, set over three days in the largely Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City, centers on a bodega owner who must decide whether or not to give up his store and leave his community behind after inheriting his grandmother’s fortune. “In the Heights” won the Tony Award for Best Musical, and now it’s a full blown movie musical from “Crazy Rich Asians” director John M. Chu.
Chu’s “In the Heights” adaptation is produced by Miranda, who also stars in a supporting role. The protagonist, Usnavi de la Vega, is being played by Anthony Ramos, who appeared on Broadway in Miranda’s blockbuster “Hamilton” and had a leading role in Spike Lee’s Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It.” Miranda...

Who says the musical is dead? The last 10 years have been jam-packed with effervescent, hilarious and melancholy movie musicals for moviegoers of every kind. Whether they incorporate their songs magically into the narrative or simply break at every possible turn for another gangbusters performance, these films kept a song in our hearts and married their wonderful tunes to memorable, sometimes completely unforgettable storylines. To each of these incredible films we say, “Bravo.”
Runners-Up (alphabetically): “Anna and the Apocalypse,” “Get On Up,” “Frozen,” “Jem and the Holograms,” “The Last Five Years,” “London Road,” “The Lure,” “Moana,” “Pitch Perfect 2,” “Tangled”
10. “The Greatest Showman” (2017)
The life of circus entrepreneur P.T. Barnum was nowhere near as sappy and sanitized as it appears in Michael Gracey’s “The Greatest Showman.” But then again, selling tickets to see an entertaining lie because the truth is inconvenient and/or grotesque is entirely in keeping with Barnum’s modus operandi.

Chelsea Stardust exorcises handsy demons and passes round the hat in the horror comedy film Satanic Panic.
The upcoming Satanic Panic is a good-natured sendup of all things bad. Since Penny Lane's documentary Hail Satan?, it seems devil worshippers are putting their best hooves forward in an effort to mainstream. Not the ones who do it right, of course, the elite few who go the extra mile to truly plum the darkness and depravity of demonic surrender. The ones who get rich off it, and aren’t afraid to sacrifice a virgin or two along the way: The diabolical one-percenters who don't pay taxes and certainly don't tip pizza delivery drivers.

It’s been a great month for the new Halloween movie, which means good news for the studio behind it, with David Gordon Green’s latest release helping to push Blumhouse Productions’ total global gross in these last nine years past the $4 billion mark. And for a studio that specializes in relatively low-budget, financially low-stakes works, this milestone is a pretty clear sign that their model is still working.
Blumhouse set the trend for its horror-heavy output with its first wide release, 2009’s Paranormal Activity, which managed to rake in $200 million worldwide on a budget of just $15,000. Since then, the found-footage flick has grown to be one of several highly profitable franchise’s that the studio helped create, with the Insidious and Sinister movies following in its wake.

As the "Blended Family" singer continues to coach Stephanie Rice, Vanessa Ferguson and Chris Blue towards The Voice Top 10, she's also announced that she won't be returning alongside Miley Cyrus for the show's next season. Back before Hamilton and his brief cameo in Seeso’s My Brother, My Brother And Me show, Lin-Manual Miranda was the man behind the hit Broadway show In The Heights. Back in June, we reported that the Weinstein Company was developing a movie adaptation of that musical, with Jem And The Holograms’ Jon M. Chu possibly set to direct, and now it looks like that project is actually moving forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jay Z has just signed on to co-produce the film, so hopefully he’ll be able to make sure it doesn’t turn out as bad as Jem And The Holograms.
It sounds like that news is pretty fresh, though, so the actual In The Heights movie is probably still fairly far off.

There are few producers who have had the overwhelming success of Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions from their early days turning Oren Peli’s low-budget Paranormal Activity into a hugely profitable franchise, followed by the equally successful Insidious and The Purge movies. Jason Blum also has an Oscar nomination notched onto his career belt for his involvement in getting Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-nominated Whiplash made, and Blumhouse were involved with bringing Jem and the Holograms to movie theaters. (Sorry, but I actually kind of liked it, even though it bombed… big time.)

Ga-ga, oh la la. Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show did not disappoint, unfurling appropriately enough after a startling first half that saw the Atlanta Falcons besting the New England Patriots 21-0, and that was hardly the only big surprise Super Bowl Li had up its (very, very sequined) sleeves.
In the weeks leading up to the big game — and its halftime spectacular — rumors persisted that Gaga would be suspended from the roof of Houston’s Nrg Stadium, that she would make a political statement, that she wouldn’t make a political statement, that she wouldn’t be joined by special guests and would play out the show entirely herself.

Despite G.I. Caruso was once in negotiations to helm a potential third installment in lieu of Jon M. But when G.I. Joe 3 was still in the mix two years ago, Caruso’s original pitch involved a crossover with Michael Bay’s Transformers, another of Paramount’s live-action juggernauts that will return later this year in the form of The Last Knight. Before touching base on that wildly ambitious concept, Caruso reflected on the moment when the G.I. Joe franchise ground to a temporary halt.

Let's start with a couple of caveats: 1) Jem and the Holograms, the 2015 adaptation of the Hasbro toy line and cartoon series directed by Jon M. Chu, is terrible; 2) I sort of adore it. I don't like it in any of the "underappreciated good movie" ways or even the "so bad it's good" ways. Honestly: Jem is atrocious filmmaking. It's miscast: Aubrey Peeples can carry most of her scenes but can't cry-act to save her life, and has to cry-act maybe ten times in the needlessly cry-acty motion picture. It's misconceived: the Misfits are left for a Nick Fury stinger in the end credits, leaving Jerrica's crushing self-identity issues as the film's only real "villain." It's also misguided: the film seems underwritten and...

Who says hard work doesn't pay off?
For the past year or two, it seems like every other article covers some endeavor of Dwayne Johnson or another. More than any other actor, this guy seems adamant about elbowing his way into just about any and every franchise under the sun.
Fast & Furious, San Andreas, Shazam!, Jumanji, Journey, Baywatch, Doc Savage, Rampage --and those are but a few franchises he's a part of, or will be a part of very soon. It's like the only movie that guy isn't in is Jem and the Holograms (no, wait, he was in that, too). If you follow him on Instagram, it's very evident that he's a hard-working dude, and 2016 seems to be a year that heavily reflects that fact.

If you follow him on Instagram, it's very evident that he's a hard-working dude, and 2016 seems to be a year that heavily reflects that fact.
