Artist, innovator, Oscar-winner, and genius are only some of the words used to describe Sakamoto Ryuichi. Since his groundbreaking debut in 1977 with his group, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Sakamoto has changed the face of modern music. He has lent his incredible range to the soundtracks of films like The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and The Revenant and has even made the occasional acting appearance. Sakamoto spoke with me at Japan Cuts about his score for Nagasaki: Memories of My Son, the first film he chose to do after recovering from cancer. The Lady Miz Diva: I think the first thing your fans will want to know is, how are you feeling? Sakamoto Ryuichi: Generally, I am feeling much...

Having been called “The Most Powerful Artist in the World” and “China’s Most Dangerous Man,” Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei has made much of an impact in the world of art, and some of his most notable pieces have been in the art of cinema. Now he teams up with writer/director Jason Wishnow (the filmmaker behind "Ted Talks") and Christopher Doyle (Dp of "In the Mood for Love," "Chungking Express," "Hero") to star in the upcoming low-fi sci-fi film entitled "The Sand Storm." Having already wrapped principal photography, the film is currently trying to raise $33,000 on Kickstarter for the post-production phase. Though the film score has been composed, "The Sand Storm," which depicts a dim and gritty not-too-distant dystopian future in which there is no water, still needs money for sound design, color correction and of course visual effects. The film, which is only 10 minutes long, was made...

Artist, provocateur and hero to many, Ai Weiwei's life and work has long been a thorn in the side of the Chinese government, even as his international profile and influence continues to grow. Even when attempts are made to silence Ai Weiwei, it can't help but shine even more light on the man and his career. And so, in April 2011 when Ai Weiwei was kidnapped by the Chinese authorities, detained, and released 81 days later under house arrest, Danish filmmaker Andreas Johnsen decided to get it on the film. The result is "Ai Weiwei: The Fake Case," which reveals the staggering pressure put on the artist by officials and authorities in China. Facing an absurd $2.5 million lawsuit, Weiwei also finds himself under constant surveillance with police on his tail and numerous cameras watching his home and following his movements. This all takes a toll on Weiwei, who begins losing sleep and suffering memory loss,...
