Sons of the Forest has only been on the market for a few months, but it is already making itself heard. Endnight Games is the independent game development studio founded by Ben Falcone and released The Forest as their debut title. Their breakthrough flaunted that one doesn’t need the same level of glory as major game developers to create a cult classic game. The game made an impression for its funky blend of survival, horror, and open-world exploration, as well as its atmospheric and tense gameplay experience. As word-of-mouth plaudits steadily build for the debut title, the studio has been

Judith James, a film, TV and Broadway producer who was Richard Dreyfuss’ producing partner for many years and worked on such projects as Quiz Show, Mr. Holland’s Opus and Eleanor: In Her Own Words, has died July 14 of cancer in Santa Barbara, CA. She was 86.
Her son, Jackson James, revealed the news.
“From the minute I met Judy James at the Mark Taper Forum [in Los Angeles], I knew I had found someone who had the same passion for storytelling that I did,” The Goodbye Girl Oscar winner Dreyfuss said in a statement. “In all the years we were producing partners, we were of like mind, not gender, and we always found a way to agree and wouldn’t have done anything without each others’ approval. She was a wonderful woman and a great friend.”

Shelley Duvall is one of a kind. Upon seeing her work in Altman's 3 Women, Andrew Sarris compared her to "a young Katharine Hepburn," while Pauline Kael said she was the "closest thing we've ever come to a female Buster Keaton." And yet, the critic would also inevitably arrive at the same conclusion that she was unique. "There are no forebears or influences that would help to explain Shelley Duvall's acting; she doesn't seem to owe anything to anyone." And so, it's a tragedy that, nowadays, she's mostly remembered as the woman broken by Stanley Kubrick during The Shining's grueling shoot, a pop psychology misreading that's spread through social media despite Duvall's own words on the matter.
Infuriating, it's condescending to a great multi-hyphenated artist whose independence and ambition defined a decades-spanning career in entertainment. Let's keep the wonders of Duvall's work alive and bright,...

On July 11th, a horror film called The Breach – which was executive produced by legendary musician Slash, who also co-produced the score – will be getting a VOD and digital release in the United States. And Variety reports that Slash has already lined up his next horror project: he’s teaming with Steven Schneider of Room 101, Inc. and Spooky Pictures – a producer whose genre credits include Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch, and Old – for a film called Janus.
Jason Zada (The Forest) will be directing Janus from a screenplay he wrote with Nate Atkins. The story centers on three band members seeking refuge in an old farmhouse where they encounter a woman harboring an unspeakable secret.
Alex Neustaedter (American Rust), Natalie Alyn Lind (Big Sky), Jack Kilmer (Lords of Chaos), Grace Van Dien (Stranger Things), and M.C. Gainey (Con Air) have already been cast in the film.

A new slate of horror movies is on the way from Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity) and Malkier Studios, with musician Slash on board as well, Variety reports this week.

Alex Neustaedter (“American Rust”), Natalie Alyn Lind (“Big Sky”), Jack Kilmer (“Lords of Chaos”), Grace Van Dien (“Stranger Things”), and M.C. Gainey (“Emperor”) will star.
Slash is producing Janus alongside Steven Schneider.

Humanity has been telling tales about simulated realities since the very dawn of storytelling, so it makes sense that modern audiences are absolutely fascinated with open-world gaming. Be it fantasy role-playing titles that allow you to step into the shoes of a more magical version of yourself or crime sims that encourage you to live out your most violent daydreams upon unsuspecting NPCs, franchises like The Elder Scrolls and Grand Theft Auto are the closest we’ve come to the immersive digital worlds that were promised to us by science fiction.
However, when it comes to horror games, the genre usually benefits from a highly curated experience with little room for side adventures. Give players too much free reign over their monster slaying and item collection and you usually end up with a gameplay loop that doesn’t mesh well with virtual frights. That’s why open world horror titles...

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

After the big preview for Sons of the Forest last month, you’d think that we’d be getting the full game later this month. Not so, apparently. Developer Endnight Games has announced that Sons of the Forest will instead launch into Early Access when it releases on February 23.
The decision to go the Early Access route for Sons of the Forest is to avoid having to delay the game again. Previously, the game was to have been released back in October 2022, which was in turn a delay from its May 2022 release.
“It’s been a long journey since we first started Sons of The Forest development and it’s grown into the biggest most complex game we have ever made,” explains the team. “There is still so much more we want to add; items, new mechanics, gameplay balance, and more. We didn’t want to delay again so have...

With Scream VI arriving in theaters on March 10, you may be wondering where you can currently stream the previous five movies in the franchise. Last year’s Scream is currently streaming on Paramount+, but what about the original quadrilogy directed by Wes Craven?
Well, Craven’s Scream 4 is currently streaming on Netflix, but that won’t be the case for much longer. We’ve learned that Scream 4 will be Leaving Netflix on February 28, 2023.
Scream 4 is definitely one of the Scream movies you’ll want to revisit before seeing Scream VI, as the new movie marks the return of Scream 4‘s Kirby, played by Hayden Panettiere.
Netflix isn’t currently streaming any of the other Scream movies at this time. You can, however, watch all three seasons of the “Scream” television series with a Netflix subscription.

2022 was a great year for gaming, all things considered. From seeing Supermassive finally break away from their Dark Pictures Anthology with The Quarry, to Resident Evil: Village finally delivering on its Dlc promise, to the long-awaited Dead Space successor The Callisto Protocol finally being released, horror in particular had a pretty eventful year.
2023 is shaping up to be another landmark year in the world of video gaming. To help cut through the noise, here’s a list of the horror games we’re looking most forward to in 2023!
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse – March 9th, 2023

The second installment, Crimson Butterfly, is a game I consider to be an absolute masterpiece in the execution of horrific storytelling and gameplay. If you were wondering about Endnight Games’ Sons of the Forest, you aren’t the only one. Even with the game’s delay last September, there hasn’t been much info coming from the developers about the sequel to 2018’s The Forest. Thankfully, that has changed with IGN’s hands-on preview, which delves into the game’s mechanics, which includes a new companion.
Much like the original game, in Sons of the Forest, you’re dropped into the middle of nowhere with the simple goal of surviving. While you can play Sons of the Forest with up to seven others, you also have the option to play the game solo. But unlike the first game, you’ve now got Kalvin. Adventures in the sex trade, ladyboys and Thai boxing feature prominently on the debut film slate being launched at the AFM by Hollywood (Thailand).
The company is currently handling its own rights sales at the American Film Market. It recently struck a first-look deal with Epic Pictures for North American rights to the slate. The two companies made their relationship official on Tuesday, the first day of the market, with an afternoon signing ceremony at the Loews Hotel.
Hollywood (Thailand) is a Bangkok-based distributor and producer that previously made creature feature “The Lake” back in 2019. At 5 million, the film had a budget significantly above the Thai average and involved significant animatronics. The film was financed through a combination of pre-sales at AFM and Chinese investment.

A safe full of cash in a remote, empty house seems like the perfect score for Mary and her friends but when the owners, an older couple, come home early, the seemingly easy hit turns into a bit of a nightmare.

The twist here, that the returning homeowners turn out to be far worse than the would-be robbers, is an interesting idea. While on the one hand, I think this reveal would have been better left as a surprise, it's also cl...

The twist here, that the returning homeowners turn out to be far worse than the would-be robbers, is an interesting idea. While on the one hand, I think this reveal would have been better left as a surprise, it's also cl...

This weekend sees a couple new wide releases in Fox's PG-13 thriller Underwater and Paramount's R-rated comedy Like a Boss, but most of the attention will be on Universal's 1917, which looks to follow-up its Golden Globe wins this past Sunday with a #1 finish as it expands nationwide this weekend. Also expanding is WB's well-reviewed drama Just Mercy as it too kicked off its release with a limited run in December and now goes nationwide.
After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sat atop the weekend box office for three straight weeks it's time for a new #1 and this weekend it appears Universal's 1917 will take those honors with ease as the recent Golden Globe winner for Best Director (Sam Mendes) and Best Picture - Drama expands from the 11 locations it has played in for just over two weeks and will now go nationwide into over 3,400 theaters. Natalie Dormer has been cast in upcoming drama series “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” in a lead role, Variety has learned.
Described as a spiritual descendant of the original “Penny Dreadful,” the new series opens in 1938 Los Angeles. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega is embroiled in a story that reflects the history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.
Dormer will play Magda, a supernatural demon who can take the appearance of anyone she chooses and manifests in a number of guises throughout the story. Described as charismatic, clever and chameleon-like, Magda is a dangerous enemy and an invaluable ally. Dormer joins previously announced cast members Daniel Zovatto, who will play Det. Vega, and Jessica Garza and Jonathan Nieves.

A new play by Beth Henley and residencies for playwrights J.T. Rogers and Sarah DeLappe are all on the docket at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s 2018 National Playwrights Conference.
The longrunning, annual developmental program, which has helped launch the careers of notable playwrights including August Wilson, Wendy Wasserstein and John Guare, has selected a total of eight new scripts to be showcased this summer in public readings that cap off a week of development for each play. “Lightning,” the latest by “Crimes of the Heart” playwright Henley, is on a list that also includes Jeremy O. Harris’ “Slave Play,” already set for a fall run at Off Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop, and Cori Thomas’ “Lockdown,” scheduled to bow at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in spring 2019.
The conference’s two writers-in-residence, meanwhile, are tapped to spend time at the O’Neill campus in Waterford, Conn., developing their own new works.

The tragedy that has brought father and daughter to this desperate place has also torn a crater-like hole in their shattered lives, leaving the girl defenceless against nightly hauntings by ghosts who encircle the tent and breathe threats to carry her away. There are many filmmaking workshops, hosted by institutions ranging from Sundance to Ifp, that allow emerging directors to assess their next projects with a group of mentors. Shudder Labs falls in line with that tradition, but comes equipped with a special focus: The new creative retreat is exclusively designed for horror directors. Hosted by Shudder, the horror streaming platform owned by AMC Networks, Shudder Labs was run by former journalist and curator Sam Zimmerman and took place June 11–15 at the Mohonk Mountain House.
Seven filmmakers participated in the lab, taking guidance from mentors that included Sarah Adina Smith (“Buster’s Mal Heart”), Larry Fessenden (director, “The Last Winter”) and Lindsay Peters (Director of the Frontieres International Co-Production Market). The Masters-in-Residence were Mike Flanagan (director, “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “Hush,” the upcoming Stephen King adaption “Gerald’s Game”) and Nick Antosca (screenwriter, “Channel Zero,” “Hannibal,” “The Forest”).

You wait for a Hollywood movie to feature the legendary Japanese forest known as Aokigahara – Aka the suicide forest – and suddenly three arrive (almost) at once. The first two, The Sea of Trees and the Natalie Dormer-fronted horror pic The Forest, ultimately failed to impress. But third time’s a charm, right?
The latest movie to take place under the shadow of Mt. Fiji is The People Garden, Nadia Litz’s character-driven drama that follows Dree Hemingway into the bowels of Aokigahara. Having made the long trip to Japan to severe ties with her rock star boyfriend Jamie, Hemingway’s Sweetpea is a woman on a mission, but our lead character soon begins to suspect something is amiss when her significant other is nowhere to be found.

After watching Gus Van Sant’s The Sea Of Trees, I’m convinced that composer Mason Bates was shown a completely different movie to score. How else can you explain the gentle woodland nymph-y aesthetic that Bates favors as Matthew McConaughey stumbles frantically around Aokigahara, otherwise known as The Suicide Forest?!
Last time I checked, suicide forests weren’t happy-go-lucky camping sites, and actor Ken Watanabe wasn’t a magical forest creature. The Sea Of Trees is such a strange, bi-polar fever-dream, far beyond Bates’ ill-fitting – and never ceasing – musical accompaniment, but it’s a damn good place to start. Then we can get to how a famed location known for unspeakable sorrow is barely characterized and defined, as yet another movie wastes Japan’s deadliest landmark.
McConaughey plays Arthur Brennan, an adjunct college professor who buys a one-way ticket to the Aokigahara forest. Arthur can’t bear to live another day alone,...

The director of The Crazies remake might be heading to Camp Crystal Lake, as Variety reports that Breck Eisner (The Last Witch Hunter) is in talks to helm the 13th film of the Jason Voorhees franchise.
While we have yet to hear official confirmation from Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes regarding a finalized deal, it looks like Eisner could be the one to bring Jason back to the big screen for the first time since 2009. David Bruckner (The Signal) was at one time lined up to direct the new movie, back when a screenplay was being worked on by Nick Antosca (The Forest).
Should Eisner get the gig, he would direct from a screenplay by Aaron Guzikowski’s (Prisoners). The new Friday the 13th is currently scheduled for a January 13th, 2017 release from Paramount Pictures.
