I think this movie wants so much to be artistic and a new vision of Shakespeare...but it's so bad. The acting, the direction, the camera work is all bad. From Gower's menacing growl, to Pericles' ridiculous wig, to the odd intro and conclusion, to whatever was going on quoting lines from Gone With the Wind.
I think it simply tried too hard. It didn't have the budget to be futuristic, and so seemed to film scenes next to highways and overpasses. How could a character be shipwrecked next to an interstate? Why didn't any of the characters have cars? And what was with the Gone With the Wind lines? (That was so weird and out of place.)
It lacked a clear identity and as a result felt amateurish to the point of being funny in a way I am sure it didn't want to be.
