Uneven Italian drama
Mozjoukine20 October 2014
This one is a murky, enigmatic drama of the Mafia bearing down on Calabria fish shop man Vinicio Marchioni and androgynous daughter Miriam Kalquist.

After watching him play a mute in BLAME IT ON FREUD, it's startling to find Vinicio has a deep, rich voice.

Most ringing element is the friendly neighborhood mobster, who brings a gift ox tongue with the offer Marchioni can't refuse. The port setting and the traveling carnival, where the boy who takes a interest in Kalquist works, add interesting texture to the piece but the plot of the mysterious missing brother edges the piece into art cinema obscurity.

Adequate production values.

Eternal love.

This movie is very intense and profound, as it manages to capture the anguish and the melancholy of the protagonist in wanting to see her lost brother at all costs. His becomes a constant and tormented search because the love she feels for her brother is as immense as the sea is.
