After a decade of bringing his personal style and sensibility to larger studio movies like “Crimson Peak,” “Pacific Rim,” and the “Hellboy” series, Guillermo del Toro wanted to return to the smaller, more personal fables he created with “The Devils’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
While Del Toro’s fables don’t have the elaborate action scenes and the sprawling canvases of his franchises, they are every bit as dependent upon his visual storytelling and world-building skills. To make “Shape of Water,” del Toro put up $100,000-plus of his own money and, with a small team of collaborators, designed the world of his amphibian love story before pitching it to financiers.
“This is the reverse of what I did on ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’” said del Toro. “Instead of pitching for the three years, trying to find the money, I developed for about two years the look of the movie...

In less than four weeks from now Arjun Rampal’s dream project Daddy would be hitting the screens. The film is a biopic which details the journey of Mumbai based gangster turned politician Arun Gawli, with Arjun playing the central protagonist.
Now the film is gearing up for release, Arjun remembers an incident that is etched in his memory for quite some time.
“On the last day of the shooting I got a call that ‘Daddy’ was out and he wanted to meet me. I was like ‘Oh damn, now what’. He asked me point blank whether I was making a film. When I said ‘yes’, he asked me to talk to his lawyers and get the necessary paperwork done. Legendary Disney Composer Alan Menken Announces Collaborations For New Film and Broadway Adaptations
Bless my soul, Alan Menken is on a roll! Disney’s go-to animated film composer has already made the crossover to the live action films with Beauty and the Beast, and he’s not slowing down. On the last day of this weekend’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Menken took to the stage to announce that he will score the music for Disney’s upcoming live action adaptations of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. Just as exciting is the news of who will be joining Menken to write the lyrics for these films, and they’ve all had pretty big years. The live action

One of the film’s we have our eye on is the Vidya Balan starred Tumhari Sulu. In the contemporary dra-medy Vidya Balan will play the lead, Sulochana, fondly known as Sulu. Sulu lands herself an unexpected job of a beautiful, fun and feisty Rj who anchors a late-night show, known for its voyeuristic quality and semi-adult shenanigans.
Talking about her role Vidya told us, “I play a late night radio jockey. I think that is going to be fun. It is going to see the naughty side of me in that. I can’t wait for that because I think it has been a while since smiled or laughed in a film. I’ve been doing intense stuff for a while.”
The film also stars theatre ace Manav Kaul who will play Sulu’s husband, Neha Dhupia who will essay the role of a radio boss, and Rj Malishka who will make her Bollywood debut with the film as a radio jockey. The quirky slice-of-life comedy, is directed by noted ad filmmaker Suresh Triveni.
After 2 months, the film has wrapped and it seems the cast and crew had an amazing time on set during the shoot of the film. In fact Vidya posted to the director, “Thank you for the most unique, exceptional, blessed, love-filled experience called Tumhari Sulu.”

The Writers Guild of America is inching a step closer toward a potential writers’ strike.
The WGA’s negotiating committee sent a letter to members on Friday, recommending that the guild’s 12,000 members take a vote on strike authorization. It did not give a timetable for such a vote, however, and such a vote would not automatically lead to a strike.
Negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Pictures & Television Producers started March 13, but without any movement, the guild is looking to take the next step.

“On the last day of these two weeks, the companies’ proposal has barely a single hard-dollar gain for writers,” the letter said. “$51 billion in profits and barely a penny for those of us who make the product that makes the companies rich. But that’s not all. In response to our proposal to...

Even years later, the murder trial and acquittal of Florida mom Casey Anthony in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, continues to attract attention.
This week Anthony broke her silence, six years after being found not guilty, telling the Associated Press, “I don’t give a s— about what anyone thinks about me, I never will.”
“I sleep pretty good at night,” she told the AP.
Anthony’s innocence in Caylee’s death is controversial: She had been described by a state Department of Corrections spokeswoman as “one of the most hated women in America,” a moniker that stuck in the media.

“La Femme et le Tgv” director Timo Von Gunten is too young to feel starstruck by his film’s star, legendary model, actress, and singer Jane Birkin. “For me, it was just Jane: A wonderful, beautiful actress, and I handled her very similarly to anyone else,” said the director, who still lives with his parents when he is home in Switzerland.
Von Gunten’s whimsical film is nominated for an Oscar in the Live Action Short category, and features an inspired performance by Birkin as Elise, a woman who waves to the train that passes by her picturesque window every morning. That part of the story is based on something Von Gunten read in the papers; the rest is pure imagination. In the film, Elise finds a note tied to a box of cheese from the train conductor, and the two begin a correspondence that reinvigorates her routine existence.

Sundance is over and the prizes are won. People have dispersed to their homes and the realities that await them there.
This was a Sundance like no other I can remember, and I have attended every single one since 1986! The cold was extreme; and the political engagement and disgust was extreme. Not only did we have the Inauguration the first day, but the Women’s March the second day had probably 6,000 people marching and on that day the first of many deplorable executive orders (this one against women of the world and their control over their own bodies) began flying off the desk of our current president, who has continued to issue at least one every day, each one more despicable than the previous. Politics and women took center stage.

Ice Cube is ready to beat the shit out of Charlie Day in the new red-band trailer for Fist Fight. This looks hilarious, and it's one one of the few comedies that I'm actually excited about seeing this year. I have no idea if it will do well or if there's a big audience out there looking forward to seeing it, and it probably won't appeal to everyone, but I'm a fan of Day, Cube, and the rest of the cast. I just think it will be a crazy, silly, and entertaining comedy. The movie was directed by Richie Keen (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and this is the synopsis:
On the last day of the year, mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. But...

High school, the best years of your life – at least, that’s what nostalgic adults would have you believe, as they look back on their days in education through rose-tinted glasses. But in New Line’s imminent comedy Fist Fight, high school is transformed into a gladiatorial arena in which Charlie Day and Ice Cube lock horns.
Pegged for release on February 17th, New Line has today unleashed the bonkers red band trailer for Richie Keen’s (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) caper, which sees a seemingly innocuous rivalry bubble over into a full-blown war. Once the battle lines are drawn, Charlie Day’s mild-mannered English teacher Andy Campbell finds himself avoiding Ice Cube’s Ron Strickland at all costs, with the latter out to enact his revenge after Campbell’s complacencies lead to him getting the sack.

Best And Most Beautiful Things screens Friday January 13th through Sunday January 15th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). The movie starts at 7:30 all three evenings.
Entertainment Weekly said of Best And Most Beautiful Things:
“A complete and compassionate portrait of the kind of person society too often ignores. It takes only a few minutes with Michelle to grasp her depth. She’s eloquent and thoughtful, with a quirky sense of humor… the film’s overall effect lets the person — not the condition — be the real story, one that’s worth sharing.”
In 2009 director Garrett Zevgetis googled the word “Beauty.”
He had been working on a number of darker-themed documentaries and was determined to find an uplifting story for a future project. The search returned a poignant Helen Keller quote that led Garrett to Perkins School for the Blind outside Boston, a renowned institution where a...

Ice Cube and Charlie Day star as high school teachers prepared to solve their differences the hard way in the comedy Fist Fight directed by Richie Keen (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”).
On the last day of the year, mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. But things go from bad to worse when he accidentally crosses his much tougher and deeply feared colleague, Ron Strickland (Ice Cube), who challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned throw down after school. News of the fight spreads like wildfire and ends up becoming the very thing this school, and Campbell, needed.
Fist Fight also stars Tracy Morgan (“30 Rock”), Jillian Bell (“22 Jump Street”), Dean Norris (“Breaking Bad”), Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Dennis Haysbert (“The Unit”), JoAnna Garcia Swisher (“The Astronaut Wives Club...

Fist Fight has one of the simplest, most boiled down premises I've seen in a long time: a tough teacher wants to fight a wimpy teacher after school. It's funny because they're the adults, guys! They're supposed to be the responsible ones! But there's nothing responsible about tying a teacher's leg to a horse and having the horse drag him through the hallways...it's hilarious, sure, but nowhere near responsible. In fact, more than anything else, that single moment is what has me interested in this movie at all — it's an inventive, ridiculous bit of physical comedy that seems to be a step above, oh, I don't know, Seth Rogen landing on an airbag in the Neighbors movies or whatever American comedies are trying to pass off as "crazy" unexpected moments these days.

"Two teachers are in a school fight to end all school fights." Warner Bros has released a second trailer for the comedy Fist Fight, featuring teachers played by Ice Cube and Charlie Day, who organize an epic battle at the end of the school year. This trailer is much better than the first trailer, showing just how much it might actually deliver in full on the "fist fight" epic battle concept. The cast also features Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Dennis Haysbert, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher. This is such a crazy simple concept for a movie, but it just might work. As long as they don't cop out with something lame at the end, when the actual fight is supposed to happen, I'm down to go see this. Have fun. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Richie Keen's Fist Fight, direct from WB's YouTube: On the last day...

Pennsylvania Nurse Fulfills Terminal Patient’s Dying Wish to Raise Her Son: ‘I Was Sent to Help Her’
When Tricia Somers was told she had terminal liver cancer, the ailing mother turned to her favorite oncology nurse, Tricia Seaman, to look after her only son when she died.
“She referred to me as her angel and said I was sent to help her and her son,” Seaman, 43, tells People. “Tricia told me that the first time I walked in to take care of her, she just felt warm and at peace. She knew I was the one.”

Trapped snowboarders try to escape the ski-based zombie apocalypse in this gruesome, if spirited, horror complete with not-very-special special effects
The zomcom epidemic of the last few years shows no sign of abating, and this piece of Austrian splatstick comes just in time for Halloween. On the last day of the ski season, a resort owner is demonstrating his new invention – a device that makes fresh snow. Unfortunately, when a Russian investor touches the mysterious green goo that powers the contraption he turns into a zombie, and the chalet party soon goes from bad to bloody. Three trapped snowboarders must escape with the help of the scene-stealing innkeeper. The slow, shambling zombies put up little resistance as they are dispatched in a series of gruesome ways involving ski poles, a snow blower and a lot of snowboards. The acting is wooden and the special effects aren’t all that special,...

Over the summer months, HBO rolled out its gleefully dark comedy series Vice Principals, pitting Danny McBride and Jody Hill against one another in a bid for supremacy. It fared relatively well with critics, even nabbing a second season renewal at the network. But now, it’s Ice Cube and Charlie Day’s turn to go a few rounds for Fist Fight, an upcoming high school comedy that hails from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia director Richie Keen.
Keen, who has arguably extracted the very best from Charlie Day across his beloved sitcom, spoke to USA Today regarding his move over to the big screen, and how Fist Fight can be viewed as a more adult-oriented spin on ’80s cult hit Three O’Clock High. There’s more to this drama than a wildly over-the-top scuffle, though, with Keen revealing that, “the truth of the matter is at this...

Here's the first trailer for Fist Fight, a new movie that stars the unlikely combo of Ice Cube and Charlie Day. They play high school teachers, and for some reason, Cube wants to knock Day out in a fight after school. The whole trailer basically looks like a slight twist on that recent Will Ferrell movie Get Hard; this time, Day tries to learn what to do and how to fight from other faculty members while constantly making a fool of himself. It's a little cheesy, but it seems like the leads are well-cast for what they're being asked to do here. Let's hope the script is up to snuff.
With a solid supporting cast that includes Tracy Morgan, Kumail Nanjiani, Jillian Bell, Christina Hendricks, and more, this one could end up being pretty funny.

If Vice Principals isn’t fulfilling your desire for high school-set hijinks amongst faculty, next year we’re getting Fist Fight, a new comedy from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia director Richie Keen. Continuing down the box-office-winning formula of teaming Ice Cube with someone who plays opposite his persona (this time Charlie Day), the first trailer has arrived.
The first trailer sets up the thinnest of premises, but with its varied cast, hopefully there’s a good amount of laughs come February. Also starring Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Dennis Haysbert, Kumail Nanjiani, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher, check out the trailer and poster below.

"I'm gunna fight you... Parking lot. After school. It's On!" Back in the '80s, I use to love those action-packed martial arts films that created icons out of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Sho Kosugi, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. One of the films that I remembered back in the days was Kickboxer, which starred a young Jean-Claude Van Damme, and was surprised that they would be making a remake of the film tilted Kickboxer: Vengeance, which would feature the return of Jcvd to the franchise.
Kickboxer: Vengeance stars martial artist and stuntman Alain Moussi, and he has some big shoes to fill as he is playing the role that once belonged to Jcvd. An update to the 1989 classic film Kickboxer, Kickboxer: Vengeance follows the story of Kurt Sloane (Alain Moussi), who travels to Thailand to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of Tong Po (Dave Bautista). Kurt trains with the legendary Master Durand (Jean-Claude Van Damme) until...

In the middle of the media maelstrom after Prince’s death, I called a friend who I knew would be in an even sadder place than most of us. Joel Bernstein, a photographer and musician for rock luminaries including Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, often said Prince was the most uniquely gifted among the pantheon of artists he knew up close. He was willing to share: “On the last day of the year, 1987, Prince’s manager called. Prince was threatening to fire his whole band if he couldn’t get a decent guitar sound. Continuing my series of sharing the most interesting titles from this year's UK Egx Rezzed event, I want to talk about the incredibly exciting new tactical RPG by Abyssal Arts.
Nowadays terms like 'Kickstarter' and 'Steam Early Access' have something of a stigma attached, I can't personally blame anyone for avoiding titles in such programs I mean, really, who could? It's because of financial mess ups such as Ant Simulator and Yogventures that I've only ever invested in one such Kickstarter project myself. I just happened to be fortunate enough that it was the highly successful Pillars of Eternity.
On the last day of Rezzed I came across another title currently in the middle of its crowdfunding campaign that has been the first of its kind to spark my interest for a good while.

Mohamed Hefzy's production company, Film Clinic, along with The Producers of Hany Osama are offering a joint co-production prize.
Cfc is hosting representatives of 12 projects in development and production phases to be part of the three-day course in Cairo to communicate with cinema industry delegates, local and international producers and distributors including:
- Roman Paul from the German Razor Films, producer of the Saudi film "Wadjda" and the Palestinian film "Paradise Now," the film which was nominated for the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Film.
- Laetitia Gonzalez from Films Du Poisson, producer of the award-winning film (12 awards) "Depuis Qu'Otar Est Parti" (Since Otar Left) and "The Tree," "Voyages" and "Tournee" the two times Cannes Film Festival awards winner.

The goal of the co-production platform is to act as a channel opening opportunities for talented filmmakers to meet and network with other entities that may be potential project partners. In addition, several cash prizes will be offered to help the projects throughout their development and completion.
Cfc was held for the first time in 2010 during the 34th Cairo International Film Festival and proved its importance as a worthwhile experience to the participants. In 2012, Cfc held its second edition hosting a higher number of successful meetings between filmmakers and industry delegates. Many of the filmmakers who were invited to attend the two previous editions of Cfc completed their films, all notable works which achieved various successes in festivals all over the world. Cfc will continue as a platform that empowers Arab filmmakers to take their projects to the widest audiences possible.
