MollywoodWe are still at a stage where even a woman suggesting foreplay to her husband is considered something radical in Malayalam cinema.Neelima MenonIn the middle of a heated argument between a married couple in the recently released short film, Freedom at Midnight, when the wife asks the husband whether he is aware of her “favourite sex position,” it suddenly seemed like a ray of hope. Did that mean our cinema had finally come out of its self-imposed exile around addressing women’s sexual agency/ female desire in their narratives? Are we finally tackling the elephant in the room? But, that ostensible show of liberation turned out to be a delusion as the narrative soon drifts into a usual plot line around a wife who finds out her husband’s extramarital affair and therefore has such a dramatic confrontation. But disappointingly, it turns out that the whole confrontation was imagined...

The repealing of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was definitely a moment of monumental significance in contemporary Indian history. Even though the provision was a legislative relic of the British colonial government, the government of the United Kingdom had revoked this provision in their own country, much before India did the same. The struggle for equal rights and opportunities for people belonging to the LGBTQ+ spectrum in India is far from over; however, the past decade has seen some interesting trends in terms of representation of queer characters in Indian cinema.
For a society that still refuses to condone sex education because the subject continues to be taboo, the cinematic medium becomes an interesting means of initiating conversations on the matter, given its reach and capacity for mass engagement. It’s been over two decades since the release of Deepa Mehta’s “Fire”, which had created...

Another eventful year for Indian film is almost over now, and it’s a good time to reflect on how far Indian Cinema has come, and in what ways it needs to push the envelope further.
The onset of the digital age has opened up new floodgates for content to reach audiences, who now, thanks to streaming platforms, have access to many smaller independently made films which get lost among the big brother releases on the big screen, many of these smaller films boasting of stellar filmmaking and compelling storylines.
There are certain films I really liked initially, especially Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, which is the Indian entry to the Oscars, but I have lost much of my enthusiasm towards it by the end of the year. But that happens as our response to films change over time.
The year’s technically not over yet, big releases like Dabangg 3...

The star of “The Sky Is Pink” is dead long before the film’s opening credits even roll. A lengthy disclaimer at the start of Shonali Bose’s film doesn’t obscure the truth, noting that the “film is based on the detailed narrations by Mrs. Aditi Chaudhary on the life of her daughter Ms. Aisha Chaudhary (deceased).” Soon enough, actress Zaira Wasim, who plays Aisha as a teenager, cuts in to narrate, flitting between diatribes about her parents’ sex life and cheeky asides about her current deceased state. “Oh, and by the way, I’m dead,” she quips. “Get over it!”
While Bose’s disclaimer also hastens to add that the film “not a documentary,” it is — somewhat improbably enough, given its unique tone — based on a true story. In 2011, teenager Aisha garnered a fair bit of fame from public speaking gigs in which she offered both inspiration and...

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is a leading actress, a singer and also a successful producer. But directing a film is something that makes her nervous.
The former beauty queen made her Bollywood debut with "The Hero: Love Story of a Spy" in 2003 and gave remarkable performances in movies like "Aitraaz", "Fashion", "7 Khoon Maaf", "Barfi!" and "Mary Kom". As a producer, she has backed movies such as "Ventilator", "Pahuna: The Little Visitors" and her latest offering -- "The Sky Is Pink".

"The Sky Is Pink", helmed by Shonali Bose, is her second Bollywood movie with a woman director.

Shonali Bose’s much-laureled 2014 “Margarita with a Straw” was a film whose presentation of a cerebral palsy-afflicted heroine sidestepped all the usual hand-wringing inspirational clichés of disability portrayal, making her story all the more enlightening and affecting. It is particularly disappointing, then, that the director’s followup should approach another tale of genetic infirmity with all the sentimentality and cuteness that last project avoided.
“The Sky Is Pink” starts with a long disclaimer (rushing by almost too fast to read) basically asserting that the film can be held accountable for representing no one’s view save that of the real-life family depicted, in particular the mother upon whose “detailed narrations“ it is based. Perhaps that’s the root of the problem here: In bending to the wishes of the surviving subjects, Bose has created an idealizing, conventional tearjerker that feels more fictive than fictional “Margarita” did. For that reason, “Pink” (which opens in the U.

Viacom18 Studios in association with Aamir Khan Productions just announced their new production and it is very exciting. Titled Laal Singh Chaddha, the film is inspired by Paramount Pictures’ Oscar winning movie, Forrest Gump. While Aamir Khan essays the titular role in the film, Kareena Kapoor Khan will be seen paired opposite him as Jenny in the adaption.
Laal Singh Chaddha is directed by Advait Chandan of Secret Superstar fame and is being written by Atul Kulkarni. The film will release in Christmas 2020.
Talking about the film, Aamir told Pti in an earlier interview,
“I have always loved Forrest Gump as a script. It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a life affirming story. It is a feel good film. It is a film for the whole family.”
He also recently discussed this adaption written by Atul Kulkarni who apparently talked about the idea of making this film during Rang De Basanti.

The Indian film industry has historically been a male-dominated one, but the winds of change are blowing across the country, albeit slowly.
Better-served than the rest of the country is the Mumbai-based Hindi-language industry, where there are several active female filmmakers including Zoya Akhtar (“Gully Boy”), Reema Kagti (“Gold”), Leena Yadav (“Rajma Chawal”), Gauri Shinde (“Dear Zindagi”), Meghna Gulzar (“Raazi”), Shonali Bose (“Margarita With a Straw”), Farah Khan (“Om Shanti Om”) and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari (“Bareilly ki Barfi”), to name just a few.
“The new generation of young women directors is now making ad films, web series, corporate films, short fiction, documentaries and feature films, so it’s getting to be quite a level playing field,” says Priya Krishnaswamy, who works in Mumbai. Her Tamil Nadu set Tamil-language film “Baaram” is making the rounds at festivals.

Some movies are realistic, some are dramatic with a touch of realism and few are just outlandish. “Zero” is a movie which falls in the third category but with a pristine thought which has never been attempted in Indian cinema. But unfortunately, the narrative lost its way in the middle of many bizarre activities and somewhat faulty characterization of the two protagonists.

MaryAnn’s quick take… We’ve literally just seen this, in 2015’s Unfriended. Tedious wannabe scarefest misses the true horrors of Facebook and cultivates a personality-free blandness. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a big horror fan
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
If you’ve seen 2015’s Unfriended — about a bunch of high school students who are tormented online by the evil spirit of a classmate who was recently bullied into suicide — then you’ve already seen Friend Request, which is about a bunch of college students who are tormented online by the evil spirit of a classmate who recently committed suicide as the ultimate passive-aggressive response to being ignored. And in fact, this “new” movie has been languishing unreleased in the Us for a year and a half, perhaps to get more air between it and the earlier film.

It’s always something with the Indian censors.
This time, it’s the refusal of the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) to grant filmmaker Alankrta Shrivastava’s “Lipstick Under My Burkha” certification for a theatrical release in India. The film, a drama following four women in small-town India exploring sexual empowerment, freedom from patriarchy, and personal fulfillment won the Oxfam Award for Best Film on Gender Equality at the Mumbai Film Festival last October and the Spirit of Asia Award at the 2016 Tokyo International Film Festival, with upcoming screenings at festivals everywhere from Miami to Glasgow. The board’s rejection of the film reignites familiar outrage, as the filmmakers and audiences alike have taken to social media to slam the decision as an “assault on women’s rights.”

The enormously empathetic Shabana Azmi, who played a lesbian in Deepa Mehta's Fire 20 years ago, now plays a lesbian's mother in Pakistani American director Fawzia Mirza's Signature Move. Shabana Azmi is not happy with the government's proposal to ban surrogate parenthood. Says Shabana Azmi, "The anti-surrogacy bill has not been thought through. Under the guise of stopping exploitation of poor women, it is retrograde in its definition of family. What's worse is that it impacts on the rights of the Lgbt community and single parents. I'm pretty sure it will not be passed in Parliament, not in its present form at least." When asked if adoption is not a viable option Shabana Azmi shoots back, "It is. But how and why should the State impose this as a no-choice? People must have the option of choice? 'G' for Government 'G' for God? Why don't they concentrate on improving the plight of poor women?...

Open, frank, funny romantic dramedy about a young Indian woman living with cerebral palsy. A perfect antidote to the disability pity porn of Me Before You. I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I first saw the wonderful Margarita with a Straw at London Film Festival in 2014, and it has stuck with me in a way that few films do. So while I’m hugely disappointed that the film has not gotten the significant theatrical release that it deserves, I’m delighted that it is now available on demand… and particularly just at this moment, because Margarita is the absolutely perfect antidote to the disability pity porn that is Me Before You.
Laila (Kalki Koechlin) is 19 years old and goes to college in Delhi. She’s smart, musically talented, sweet, honest, and has lots of friends.

Premiering in 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival, Margarita With A Straw received standing ovations at each of its three sold-out screenings, and it is not hard to understand why. Dismissing any cliché or heavy handed sentiments, director Shonali Bose instead focuses on a remarkably gifted young girl with cerebral palsy named Laila. She has everything and is surrounded by love and support. She writes music for an indie band at her University in Delhi and like all young single-something's she is lonely and sexually frustrated. When something happens at her school her mother makes an informed decision to transfer Laila to a University in New York. It is like a dream come true for her, and a chance encounter leads to a passionate...
