We all know the three rules of mogwai: don’t expose it to sunlight, don’t get it wet and don’t feed it after midnight. While that third point is up for debate as to its interpretation, one thing that isn’t is the desire for a third Gremlins movie – at least to its original star, Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in both the 1984 movie and its 1990 sequel, The New Batch. With animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai proving to be a hit, maybe Galligan is right in his call for Gremlins 3.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Galligan said that the studio must have a plan for the Gremlins franchise if they have invested more time and money into Secrets of the Mogwai. “I can’t really figure out why Warner Bros. would do two seasons – not one, but two seasons – of the animated series, and spend a lot of money on it,...

It is time to look at everything we know about the cast and release of a potential Gremlins 3.
After first kicking off with the Christmas classic Gremlins in 1984, the franchise continued into Gremlins 2: The New Batch in 1990; however, the evil light-fearing mogwai have been out of commission on the big screen for over three decades.

In the aftermath of the streaming gold rush, it’s not necessarily unusual to learn that a TV show you’ve never seen nor maybe even heard of has debuted, run for somewhere between one and three seasons, and sunk back into a morass of disorganized #content.
But it’s still a bit surprising to remember that after literally decades of speculation about a third Gremlins movie, Max released an entire Gremlins prequel series earlier this summer, to seemingly little fanfare. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai debuted back in May and is probably the closest we’ll get to an in-continuity Gremlins 3 for quite some time, possibly ever. It currently has all of 20 professional reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hollywood has '80s fever, and virtually every remotely popular '80s movie is being turned into a franchise. But there's one big 1980s movie that, surprisingly, never really became the huge franchise it could have easily become: "Gremlins."
Sure, we did get a bonkers sequel and a crap-ton of merchandize, but despite talks of a third "Gremlins" film, director Joe Dante has never returned to the world of Mogwai. Until now.

In an age of reboots and long-gestating sequels, Gremlins 3 remains oddly unrealized. While over 30 years have passed since 1990’s celebrated-but-divisive Gremlins 2: The New Batch stumbled at the box office, there’s been no shortage of fruitless teases ever since. Yet, the property still has a pulse, with an HBO Max animated prequel series in the works, and this week saw Zach Galligan reunite with Gizmo for a commercial that might provide the blueprint—story-wise and production-wise—for the threequel, as the star seems to hint.
The Mountain Dew Zero Sugar commercial (seen below), chock-full of franchise-evocative Easter eggs, shows movie protagonist Billy Peltzer (Galligan) hyping the soda before unwisely giving Gizmo a gulp (as if he didn’t know any better), leading to an all-too-familiar population outbreak. Billy’s daughter reacts with an exasperated sigh.

Don’t get too excited thinking that another Gremlins movie is coming right away, but it does sound as though the script for Gremlins 3 is ready to go, it’s now a matter of who has the proper rights to make the movie and when it will actually happen. The original lead actor is apparently ready to go, but it’s not really known what the script is going to entail since it’s been quite a while since Gremlins 2 came out, and it was definitely a stinker since despite the use of so many more imaginative puppets it still wasn’t as

It’s been 30 years since “Gremlins 2” flipped the franchise on its head and became one of the most interesting sequels in film history. However, in those decades since, the “Gremlins” franchise largely remained dormant. But that isn’t stopping filmmaker Chris Columbus from still working on “Gremlins 3” and talking about how he isn’t sold on the idea of using CGI for a new take on the little monsters.

We’re just over a month away from Christmas, meaning that tons of people around the world are going to be dusting off their collection of holiday favorites, and one of the first titles on the list for a lot of fans will no doubt be Joe Dante’s Gremlins. The beloved horror comedy was a massive box office success when it first hit theaters in the summer of 1984, bringing in over $212 million on a budget of just $11 million, and has since endured for close to four decades as a cult classic.
A sequel arrived six years later, but self-aware and meta follow-up The New Batch bombed hard, failing to even recoup the $50 million production costs despite gaining solid reviews. Over the last 30 years, talk of a third installment has never strayed too far from the conversation, but despite numerous attempts to get Gremlins 3 off the ground, it still hasn’t happened yet.

Surprisingly, given that the first one is a Christmas classic, it’s been 30 years since there was a new entry in the Gremlins franchise. Yes, as you surely know, 1990’s zany sequel Gremlins: The New Batch is somehow the only time to date that Warner Bros. has tried to capitalize on the success of the 1984 original. There is an animated series on the way, though, and talk of Gremlins 3 has stopped and started over the past few years.

For children of the ‘80s, Gremlins holds a special place in the heart. Director Joe Dante’s allegedly wholesome family entertainment, produced by Steven Spielberg at the height of his Amblin powers no less, was actually a deceptively sinister little film. It was for all ages, to be sure, but in its heart, it was subverting its Frank Capra-esque iconography by having the Gremlins turn into PG movie monsters. And if Gremlins 3 had happened, screenwriter Carl Ellsworth promises it would’ve leaned into that sinister quality while also being every bit as nostalgia-drenched as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
“The last time I touched [the script] is now going on three years ago,” Ellsworth told ComingSoon. “I was so excited to do it. I got the chance to work with Chris, and I loved the story we came up with. I’m so bummed that it hasn’t seen the light of day yet.

Joe Dante’s 1994 classic Gremlins has always been one of the my favorite Christmas movies. The film is energetic, weird and has a jet black sense of humor, best displayed in Phoebe Cates’ hilarious monologue about why Santa didn’t deliver any presents one Christmas. And now, audiences are going to get to enjoy Gremlins once again on the big screen, and it’ll look better than it ever has before.
Regal has just announced that the movie will be screened from December 5th – December 11th in 4Dx. That’s their ‘ultimate experience’ that involves hydraulic chairs and you getting fans, water and haze sprayed on while you watch the movie. It’s kinda silly, but fits a goofy pic like Gremlins perfectly. The film itself has just been remastered for 4K Ultra HD for a home release, too, so I’m presuming that this pristine new copy will look fantastic on the big screen.

One of the biggest reasons that making Gremlins 3 will be a mistake is that Gremlins 2 was already a big mistake. The second installment of the film was quirky and funny in some ways but also got so out of control that it became something uniquely crazy that the director didn’t seem to have a handle on. The gremlins had the chance to create absolute havoc within the building they took over and instead played most of the time as is their wont. Yes they did cause mayhem and did manage to kill some people, but for the most

Chris Columbus reveals he's finished the script for Gremlins 3, and that it's "twisted and dark".
Amongst the list of projects missing presumed dead was a revival of the Gremlins film series. Chris Columbus, who penned the original film, had been working on a screenplay for a new movie, but nothing had been heard of it for some time. It had been assumed that its moment had passed.
An incorrect assumption that, though. Columbus, in a new interview with Slashfilm, has confirmed that he’s now actually completed a screenplay for Gremlins 3, and that it’s now over to Warner Bros.

Back in 2016, Gremlins star Zach Galligan revealed that Chris Columbus – the writer of that original 1984 movie – was hard at work on a script for Gremlins 3. This was somewhat surprising, given that Columbus is known to have been unhappy with the direction in which 1990’s Gremlins 2 took his foundational ideas. It was exciting for the same reason, though – if anyone could bring the Gremlins property back on track, it’s the man who invented it in the first place, right?

While there’s no shortage of sequels/remakes/reboots to ’80s movies these days, Gremlins 3 has yet to come into fruition — though not for a lack of trying. Those involved, including producer Chris Columbus, have attempted to get the project off the ground for a few years now, at least, to no avail. But they are persistent. According to Gremlins star Zack Galligan, Columbus, Warner Bros. and Steven Spielberg all want it to happen, and Columbus has been “aggressively working” to make it a reality.

Over the years there have been a few updates on Gremlins 3, and if producer Chris Columbus has his way it's going to happen eventually. During a recent interview with Bleeding Cool, Gremlins star Zack Galligan offered an update on the film, saying that Warner Bros., Columbus, and Steven Spielberg all want it to happen. He also says that Columbus has been aggressively working on it. Here's what he had to say:
"I think you can tell what’s happening with Gremlins 3 the same way you could tell with Gremlins 2. It’s the same people and they tend to work the same way. There is a huge time gap but it’s Warner Bros, Spielberg and Chris Columbus. Now, Chris Columbus didn’t have anything to do with Gremlins 2 – because by his own admission he didn’t see a franchise. He kind of regrets it I believe,...

How could you ever one up a cult classic about adorable creatures that transform into hilarious terrifying monsters if you feed them after midnight? Take them to New York. At least that was the thinking behind the conceit of “Gremlins 2: The New Batch.” An old promotional video, starring the film’s technically impressive “Brain Gremlin” hawks the sequel as the greatest money-making enterprise since the original.

Brain Gremlin spins around in his large leather chair like the power hungry executive he is, and addresses the audience head on. “I’m here to handle the delicate arrangements of getting ‘Gremlins ‘ into the video marketplace. Oh, you humans may try, but it takes someone like me who really understands the nuances, the subtleties, the je ne sais quois,” he growls.

We chat to Skulduggery Pleasant author about the movie adaptation, new trilogy Demon Road, horror influences, Feminism and Doctor Who…
Derek Landy is excited. Next week, he's going to see two of his favourite 80s films on the big screen for the first time. His publisher Harper Collins is hosting screenings of Joe Dante's Gremlins and Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street at London's Picturehouse Central (win tickets to both, here) for Landy's legion fans as part of the publicity circuit for book two of his Demon Road trilogy, Desolation.
Landy made his name in Young Adult fantasy with the nine-book Skulduggery Pleasant series about a skeleton detective and his teenage girl accomplice. The huge success of the first Skulduggery novel was a tornado that lifted him Dorothy-like straight out of his family's farm in Ireland and plonked him down in Hollywood where he...

Gamesradar recently interviewed actor Zach Galligan about the newly announced “Gremlins 3” which will be produced by Steven Spielberg.
Galligan spoke about the new film at a recent screening of the original 1984 “Gremlins” at the Prince Charles Cinema located in London, England. Galligan said:
“It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form.”
Galligan spoke about director Chris Columbus who scripted the original film saying:
“Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade.”
Instead of a remake Galligan insisted that the new film would be a continuation much like “Jurassic World” saying:
“So the only thing they will be - and apparently are going to be - doing is something along the lines of Jurassic World,...

As painful as it is, we should probably accept that the Gremlins movies are going to get remade, rebooted or by some other means resuscitated sooner rather than later. Especially in the wake of Jurassic World, the nostalgia factor and prospect of squeezing more profit out of a long-retired franchise is just too tempting for most filmmakers to turn down.
Zach Galligan, who starred in the original, said as much recently at a Q&A following a screening at London’s Prince Charles Cinema. Though the actor’s connection to whatever Steven Spielberg, Gremlins writer Chris Columbus (both attached to produce) and Carl Ellsworth (tasked with scribing the new installment) are cooking up is tenuous to say the least, he offered up this tidbit:
“It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and...

Start spreading the news... Gremlins 3 is still happening, according to Zach Galligan, 51, who played main star Billy Peltzer in the first two movies of the cult horror-comedy franchise. "It's not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form," he said at a Q&A with fans at a screening of the 1984 original film at the Prince Charles Cinema in London this week. Rumors about Gremlins 3 have been floating around for about a year. Galligan echoed similar comments Chris Columbus, who wrote the script of the first movie but was uninvolved in the making of the second, had made about the third film. He told Slashfilm in April he will serve as a producer...

Zach Galligan confirms that Gremlins 3 is still coming - and that it's taking a Jurassic World-style approach...
Gremlins star Zach Galligan has been at London's brilliant Prince Charles Cinema for the past two nights, for the venue's seasonal screenings of the first Gremlins film. And as such, he's been doing Q&As, that have revealed fresh details about the forthcoming planned Gremlins 3 movie.
The last we heard of it was that original writer Chris Columbus was involved, along with Red Eye scribe Carl Ellsworth. Columbus had said earlier in the year that he was looking to Jj Abrams' Star Trek reboot for inspiration. But now it seems that the success of Jurassic World has taught a lesson or two.
"It's not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape or form", Galligan said. He added that...

Seth Grahame-Smith is no stranger to high profile Hollywood movies. He got his big break as the novelist behind Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and he also wrote the script for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows. And while most of his produced projects to date haven't been monster hits with fans, he's clearly doing something right behind the scenes because studios consistently want to be in the Grahame-Smith business. He's been hired to write Beetlejuice 2 and The Lego Batman Movie, and Grahame-Smith's name has also been attached to Ninjago and a new Gremlins movie. But now he's in the process of landing his biggest job yet-- writing and directing DC Comics' The Flash (which is a...

If Warner Bros. and DC Comics were looking to one-up Marvel in the game of leftfield directing choices after this weekend’s announcement of Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok, the companies have managed it. Prolific author, screenwriter and producer Seth Grahame-Smith is in negotiations to write and direct The Flash. Grahame-Smith, who has thus far limited his directing to two episodes of TV comedy The Hard Times Of Rj Berger, which he wrote on and produced, would seem to be a hugely unlikely candidate for the job of one of DC’s big comic book movies despite his experience behind the camera in other roles. He adapted his novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter into a film, wrote Dark Shadows for Tim Burton and has written and is producing a multitude of other projects, including a Gremlins reboot, a Beetlejuice sequel and a new Looney Toons film. He's also been dipping...

Think Hollywood is bereft of original ideas? You just might after this. Here's our look at the assorted movie sequels currently in the works. 23 Jump Street
Sony is pressing ahead with a third Jump Street movie, as well as a possible Jump Street vs Men In Black film, and a female-headlined spin-off. For 23 Jump Street specifically, Rodney Rothman is back and working on the script (he wrote the second one). It's unclear yet if Chris Miller and Phil Lord can find breathing space in their schedule to direct. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both expected back,...

As it wasn't yet after midnight, Chris Columbus was allowed out of his cage to roam freely around CinemaCon last week, where he spoke to HitFix about the status of that planned Gremlins reboot. As Columbus reports, it's "in good shape," with a script he promises will be inspired by J.J. Abrams — in a good way. "I learned something from J.J. Abrams," he said. "You have to connect the audience emotionally to the past. Seeing Leonard Nimoy in that movie, and seeing Harrison Ford and Chewbacca at the end of the [Star Wars] trailer ... we're going to apply that to Gremlins. We're not going to forget about the past." Zach Galligan is currently standing by his phone, trembling with anticipation.

With the Gremlins reboot still going, it's been revealed that a new writer has joined the project: Red Eye and Disturbia's Carl Ellsworth...
The last we heard, the long-mooted Gremlins reboot was on hold.
The new addition to the film series created by the great Joe Dante was being written by Seth Grahame Smith, but in January, he revealed that the project had "run out of steam" - producers Christopher Columbus (who wrote the 1984 original) and Steven Spielberg were, he said, busy on other projects.
"I think we just ran out of steam", he said. "It's one of those things where everybody got so busy doing other things. It's something I would love to come back to, but right now, Steven's making two movies back to back and Chris Columbus is busy [making Pixels]. We're all taking a five-minute break on that".

Joe Dante's seminal horror comedy Gremlins celebrated its 30th anniversary last summer and its underrated sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, will have its 25th birthday this June. The anniversaries of these two memorable creature features may have many remembering the franchise and wishing for that third installment that never was. Though a Zach Galligan-starring Gremlins 3 sadly never came to fruition, a remake has been in and out of the works for quite some time and was recently presumed to be dead. But Warner Bros. looks to be resurrecting the project, as they've hired a writer to scribe the remake, one who has lent his pen to both the hardcore horror and horror comedy sub-genres.
According to /Film, Warner Bros. has hired Carl Ellsworth to pen the Gremlins remake, with Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg are producing the project. Many fans will remember that Columbus wrote and...

Delays hit the reboot of Gremlins, as writer Seth Grahame-Smith admits "I think we just ran out of steam".
Director Joe Dante has long-admitted that he thinks a new Gremlins film is an inevitability.
Dante, who's helmed both the Gremlins films to date, hasn't been involved with a Gremlins 3, nor the talk of a reboot that tends to surface from time to time. And a reboot is currently the thinking for a new Gremlins adventure.
Seth Grahame-Smith, who's also working on Beetlejuice 2, had pitched an idea for a new Gremlins to producer Steven Spielberg and the writer of the original, Chris Columbus. And it seemingly got to the stage where he was working on the project. However, in a new piece at Entertainment Weekly, he concedes that the new Gremlins has burnt out somewhat.
