My overall rating of "Veep"'s Season 2: 5/10
That episode legitimately made me upset. Firstly, there's just a lot of unreciprocated meanness in the episode from the filming crew to Selina's, and especially towards Amy: while obviously there have been a lot of rude jokes and barbs thrown around in the show they typically have felt more like banter, but here it's like a full-blown "Olive Kitteridge". Deeply unpleasant.
Secondly, Selina's "personal life" stuff is cringy and unfunny, and Catherine remains likewise. I think the idea is supposed to be a reprise of Nicola Murray's family storyline from "The thick of it"'s Season 3, a female politician's life getting destroyed by having to follow some optics, but there it felt like it added a dramatic edge - here it's just upsetting and simultaneously boring. Please make that whole plotline stop.
Thirdly, Selina's little speech in the end is awful and I'm not sure how that jumbled nonsense is supposed to have won her public sympathy as the following episodes allege.
The funny parts are few: Jonah receiving an unusually warm welcome and his hugging Catherine; Gary's kicking out the staff... Maybe some off-hands here and there?.. What a waste!
