Psycho’s shower scene is one of the most iconic scenes ever filmed. But does just one 45 second scene warrant an entire documentary?
Seventy-eight. Fifty-two. Just numbers, sure, but also the precise alchemical formula for creating the most iconic scene in cinematic history. In around 45 seconds, the legendary auteur Alfred Hitchcock used seventy-eight setups and fifty-two cuts to craft Psycho’s shower scene, an unforgettable sequence that transcended the confines of the screen into immortality. Not only are film students destined to pore over it for generations to come, trying to unlock its many secrets, but it has also shaped key areas of our shared cultural consciousness. How? As well as restyling the depiction of violence on screen for future filmmakers to come, the shower scene reimagined the representation of violence onscreen towards women, with Karyn Kusama, director of several thrillers herself, calling it the "first modern expression of the...

Picture it: any movie theater in the fall of 1960. It was the shower seen around the world, followed quickly and without warning by the screams of millions that reached the darkest recesses of space. Over a short period of time, it was a story that turned legendary, even without seeing the actual film: amateur thief Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), overwhelmed with guilt to return the $40,000 she’s stolen, goes to take a shower and is brutally slashed to death by motel proprietor Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins)… ’s mother. To the studio heads at Paramount, it was the tackiest of numerous tasteless scenes schemed up by a great showman of a director trying his hand at a sleazy B-movie. To history, Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho‘ is a landmark that broke the rules with aplomb and changed the game, all while inspiring a rise in baths among movie patrons (and a joking...

The shower murder in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” sits alongside the opening of “Citizen Kane” and the climax of “2001: A Space Odyssey” as one of the most famous movie scenes in history, but the reasons are both obvious and elusive. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 proto-slasher film jarred audiences with the sudden death of leading lady Janet Leigh midway through, in a grisly, taboo-shattering bout of nudity and knifing at the ends of a shadowy, cross-dressing Norman Bates. As a complex narrative strategy and a subversive stunt, it kickstarted decades of conversations, so it’s surprising it took so long for someone to make a movie about it.

Documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe has tackled a variety of topics over his career, including zombies (Doc of the Dead) and the fickleness of Star Wars fans (The People vs. George Lucas), but it’s his latest project, 78/52, which thoughtfully examines the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, that might be his most ambitious project to date. The documentary took Philippe three years to complete, and features a cavalcade of fantastic interviews with numerous notable folks, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Guillermo del Toro, Peter Bogdanovich, Bret Easton Ellis, Danny Elfman, Mick Garris, Karyn Kusama, Oz Perkins, Richard Stanley, Elijah Wood, and many more.
Daily Dead caught up with Philippe on the eve of 78/52’s premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to discuss the long road to getting the project made, his approach to making sure 78/52 would be accessible to everyone (even those who may not be Psycho fans), some of...

★★★☆☆ There was a time when the zombie was considered the less illustrious horror stablemate to the sexier, more outwardly alluring vampire. The shift in popularity has risen significantly of late, and given the increasing prominence of the zombie mythos in mainstream entertainment, Doc of the Dead (2014) is both a welcome and long overdue look into the history and cultural impact of the humble flesh-eater. With the added movie geek credential of being co-produced by popular online cinematic commentator RedLetterMedia, director Alexandre Phillipe has carefully put together a documentary which appeals to both dyed-in- the-wool George A. Romero devotees and newer, Walking Dead-era converts.

I like zombies just as much as the next person. Well, okay, maybe a little more, but probably not by much. While my friends and I, as teenagers, discovered the walking dead from satirical horror movies sought out in movie rental shops, most new initiates to the delights of the undead can simply leave their TV on for ten minutes and chances are there’ll be a zombie on it at some point.
Zombies have taken over the world. While the irony of their mass appeal is most certainly lost on them, it isn’t lost on Alexandre Philippe and Chad Herschberger, who decided the best way to deal with the oversaturation...

The delights of genre cinema are born from human imagination. The stories are nurtured by individuals who optimistically hope and believe across the years of their lives that a single film will devour that their tales arrive at the intended destination – to discover and touch the sensibilities of the audience.
If films are born out of the imagination then so the same could be said for the festivals that showcase them – festivals such as FrightFest that are crafted according to an ethos shared by four men who genre cinema continues to owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude – “‘Run by fans for the fans”, to find those great new voices in genre and see what difference they can make, and to ensure the FrightFest spirit of community endures.
But those who champion and showcase films, supporting their endeavours to find an audience on their ongoing journey from the intimate confines of its maker’s world,...

Hailing itself as the definitive zombie culture documentary is Doc of the Dead, directed by Alexandre Philippe and featuring interviews with the likes of George A. Romero, Greg Nicotero, Simon Pegg, Bruce Campbell, Tom Savini, Stuart Gordon, Max Brooks and many more. Undoubtedly one of the more expansive explorations of why zombies have endured all these years in cinema and in pop culture, Doc of the Dead only skims the surface on many of its topics.
There’s no denying that Philippe knows his subject matter well for Doc of the Dead, as he creates his own oral history on zombies that covers a multitude of topics: classic and modern films, the evolution of the flesh eaters over the years, how zombies have now infiltrated the mainstream beyond the cinema, highlights from a bunch of zombie short films created over the years, and a look at the possibility of a...

A long, long time ago, when The Walking Dead was just a phrase and zombie movies only had a cult following, George A. Romero came along and created one of the most iconic horror movies in history – The Night Of The Living Dead. Many people consider this title to be where the zombie genre was created, marching forward in time towards becoming an unstoppable pop culture juggernaut, but that’s not Entirely true. Yes, The Night Of The Living Dead really put zombies on the map, but variations of Romero’s creatures existed for years beforehand – something you’ll learn by watching a documentary called Doc Of The Dead.
Filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe (The People Vs. George Lucas) has been watching zombies claw their way into every aspect of our daily lives, and he found it necessary to properly educate audiences on how zombies became the iconic figures that they now stand as.

Tom Savini is a great guy to talk zombies with. The horror legend has worked as an actor and director (who remade "Night of the Living Dead" in 1990), but is best known for his special effects and makeup work on films like George A. Romero's seminal "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead." Savini's one of the interviewees in "Doc of the Dead," a new documentary from "The People vs. George Lucas" director Alexandre O. Philippe that explores the evolution of the zombie on screen, from its early days in features like the Haiti-set "White Zombie" through Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" through to the AMC juggernaut that is "The Walking Dead." The film explores the appeal of the animated undead by way of interviews with folks like Savini and Romero as well as actors Bruce Campbell and Simon Pegg and writers Max Brooks and Robert Kirkman.

Anyone who sets out to make a documentary film about the history of zombie cinema is in a no-win situation: if you stick with the obvious stuff, then the hardcore horror fans will get bored, impatient, and very annoyed. But if you focus mainly on the oddest and most obscure information regarding cinematic zombiedom, then you're leaving out all the newbies -- or the geeks who only pretend to know White Zombie from Rob Zombie.
Fortunately the movie-obsessed documentarian Alex Philippe -- his film The People vs. George Lucas is recommended to any hardcore Star Wars nut -- knows how to cover a lot of bases in a short amount of time, and the result is a light and amusing film about some of the grossest movies you'll ever see. Without rattling off all the statistics, let's just say that Mr. Philippe and his team manage to touch on all...

Welcome to 2014 – where twerking exists, Pharrell looks like Smokey The Bear, and zombies have become a major staple in everyday societal culture. Yes, brain-munching, decaying, vile, mindless zombies have risen in popularity and weaseled their way into every facet of modern life. There are zombie walks where cosplayers sport their most grotesque and creative festering wounds, overtaking major city streets as a pack of undead supporters, zombie 5K races (which yours truly Almost survived) – hell, the most popular show on TV is a drama about zombies (depending who you ask). So what’s the big deal with zombies all of a sudden? That’s exactly the question that director Alexandre O. Philippe (The People Vs. George Lucas) attempts to answer with his newest horror themed documentary, Doc Of The Dead.
