The final night of David Letterman's CBS Late Show, marking his formal retirement from television, was not actually all that special. Which is what made it so special.
Even with an opening that featured a bunch of presidents and a closing that revealed the presence of Letterman's son, Harry, in the audience, it was a modest and self-deprecating evening.
Letterman, who began his career bristling with porcupine quills and has lost all but a few of them over three decades, was too kind to tell his fans that they face a troubling new era fraught with doubt and questions.

With such a massive media empire it’s hard to believe that Oprah Winfrey is raising the bar for herself yet again.
And in the July 2014 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, the 60-year-old icon explains that each step of her journey is designed to take things to the next level.
“I’m on a mission to upgrade my life in every way I can. Every Oprah Show I ever taped, every magazine article I published, every Lifeclass and Super Soul Sunday I’ve done – they all originated with the intention to upgrade.”
“Don’t get me wrong: I feel blessed to have the life I’m living. Several times a day I look around in awe of how someone like me, born in apartheid Mississippi, got to where I am. It’s still a wonder to me. And yet each day I enhance and expand the material goodness and...

While the Own network has become increasingly removed from the inspirational, self-help vibe of "Oprah" thanks, at least in part, to Tyler Perry and Lindsay Lohan and a raft of reality TV programming, Oprah Winfrey is taking her show (namely "Super Soul Sunday" and "Oprah's Lifeclass") on the road. Winfrey has announced the Fall 2014 launch of "Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend," an eight-city arena tour and "transformational weekend" featuring Oprah Winfrey and a team of special guests. While most arena tours are sponsored by beer brands, Winfrey's are more fitting for her middle-aged mom demo -- Olay and Toyota. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning April 7 at 10 a.m. local time at www.oprah.com/tour. “All of my life I have wanted to lead people to an empathy space. To a gratitude space,” said Winfrey. “I want us all to fulfill our greatest potential.

We all know that Own is rebounding because of the soaps and Tyler Perry. But Oprah Winfrey said in an interview with New York magazine that her network’s early ratings struggles came because it was “too stoic and too serious”. “I have a tendency to look at everything from the point of view of: What is going to be meaningful, and uplift people? That can become too stoic and too serious — which is the same issue I suffered with at the magazine in the beginning. It needed more humor”, Winfrey told New York. “So we [began] looking for lighter fare. Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s works. Iyanla: Fix My Life was also a turning point. Having programming that was in alignment with the vision but also left the space to widen the lane for the vision. If it were up to me, I’d be doing [Winfrey’s Sunday talk show] Super Soul Sunday conversations all the time.

Mastin Kipp, the founder of the pop culture blog, TheDailyLove.com, says his life changed forever with a single tweet from reality star Kim Kardashian. In this clip from "Super Soul Sunday" on Own, Kipp tells Oprah how that fateful tweet played a huge role in his spiritual journey.
Kipp began TheDailyLove.com after struggling with addiction and losing his dream job in the music industry. It was a turning point for Kipp, who decided to get sober and start blogging to connect with other like-minded people.
In the video, he says launching the blog wasn't an easy process. "When we first started, it took me a year to get a thousand followers," he says.
While struggling to gain an audience, he says his life simultaneously seemed to crumble. "The relationship I was in fell apart," Kipp says. "The investors in my company pulled out because they lost money in the recession.

When singer/songwriter India.Arie reached out to Oprah to share candid details of her transformative spiritual breakthrough, the Grammy Award-winning artist had one fear she couldn't seem to shake. During her appearance on "Super Soul Sunday," India.Arie not only confesses the fear, but also realizes that the fear wasn't just tied to her spiritual shift; it also affected her life in a very public way.
"What I was afraid of was being judged," India.Arie confesses to Oprah. "I realize now that I have always been so judgmental."
India.Arie says she hadn't previously thought of herself as judgmental, per se. "To me, it's just like an opinion. But I realize I go really hard with it," she says in the video. "I'm really judgmental, especially about things that I feel make my life harder."

She's a four-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter who has sold more than 10 million records worldwide. But on an episode of "Super Soul Sunday," India.Arie tells Oprah her definition of success has nothing to do with billboard charts or record sales.
"I decided to write down my definition of success, which is, 'Clarity of my intention and reaching that intention while being true to myself and with joy,'" India.Arie says. "You know, what's the point in having it all if you don't feel good? ... You know, I know what it's like to have millions of dollars and have an ulcer you can't get out of bed and you can't drink water. You know, it's just like, what good is that?"
"Super Soul Sunday" airs Sundays at 11 a.m. Et on Own.

Fame, fortune, adoring fans -- celebrities seem to have it all. But when one of the esteemed elite experiences a hard and fast fall from grace, society can't seem to get enough of the voyeuristic details. Celebrity gossip has now become absorbed into mainstream news coverage and the obsession with celebrity breakdowns extends far beyond the tabloids.
Oprah has coined a term for this obsession: fallen celebrity syndrome. As she explains in the above video from "Super Soul Sunday," we as a society seem to delight in other people's suffering. The big question is, why?
Philosopher and poet Mark Nepo says fallen celebrity syndrome is simply filling a void for something more meaningful.
"We have a culture that is obsessed with celebrity when we're quietly aching for things to celebrate," he says. "Carl Jung spoke about this in terms of alcoholism -- he said it was the right spiritual thirst,...

During her four-year break from the music business, singer/songwriter India.Arie retreated to an island to reflect, clear her head and rediscover what really mattered to her. There, in seclusion, the Grammy Award-winner says that she learned a lot about herself and about life in general -- including something that was sparked by an email she received from Oprah.

Singer/songwriter India.Arie has created songs with messages of empowerment, pride and strength, but despite her music's upbeat qualities, the Grammy Award winner hasn't always felt so positive. Several years ago, a series of physical setbacks, a broken engagement and a cross-country tour left India.Arie exhausted -- and at a spiritual crossroads, she recently explained to Oprah during an episode of "Super Soul Sunday."
In the above video from India.Arie's conversation with Oprah, the singer says that her deep internal struggle took a serious toll on her physically and emotionally. "One of my oldest friends, he calls me 'sunshine.' It was a joke because I was so moody," India.Arie says. "[But] it just looked like I was moody."
In reality, India.Arie says something much more profound was going on. "I didn't have a foundation of well-being. I didn't like my 'default setting.' I just...

Americans don't shy away from taking pills. According to Ims Health, an estimated 16 million people in the United States use painkillers, 5 million take sleep aids and 18 million rely on some form of antidepressants. In this week's "Super Soul Sunday," Oprah and a panel of dynamic thought leaders tackle the issue of pill-popping in this country -- is it a necessity or has it become gratuitous?
For Oprah, the pill-popping statistics raise a deep philosophical question. "Do these numbers point to a collective hole in the soul of our country?" she asks her panel in the video. Reverend Ed Bacon of the All Saints Episcopal Church addresses the issue of taking pills with a personal admission that he himself takes sleep aids and pain medicine.
