It's no secret that the first third of 2024 has been at best uneven as far as the box office goes. Ticket sales are lagging way behind this same point in 2023, in no small part thanks to movies like "Abigail" and "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperforming on the same weekend. Thankfully, the summer movie season is on the horizon and Hollywood, as well as theater owners, will hinge their hopes on a varied slate being able to sell an outsized number of tickets. That all begins next weekend with the release of Universal's "The Fall Guy." The question is, can Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt strike gold in the summer season once again after last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon?
"The Fall Guy" will be the first blockbuster to hit theaters in May, which typically ushers in the summer for Hollywood. Currently, the big-budget action/comedy is looking at an opening weekend in the $40 million range,...

Visual effects veteran Tim McGovern, who received a Special Achievement Oscar for the VFX in the 1990 sci-fi classic “Total Recall,” has died, his wife Reena NeGandhi announced Saturday on social media. He was 68.
The VFX innovator served as CGI director on Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall,” which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was based on Philip K. Dick’s “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.” McGovern’s work on the film included the inventive effects used as Schwarzenegger’s Quaid and others pass through a sort of X-ray security check revealing their skeletons.
“We were saddened and shocked by the sudden news of Tim’s untimely passing,” said Kim Davidson, Visual Effects Society board chair, in a statement. “Tim and I have been Ves members and colleagues for many years and his passion and loyalty to the Society were exemplary. If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Craig Mazin recently told the Los Angeles Times that the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is so weird he is surprised Disney actually bought it. Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on two “Pirates” movies: A reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film in the original franchise written by Mazin and Ted Elliott, the latter of whom co-wrote the first four “Pirates” movies.
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,” Mazin said. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
The last “Pirates” movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” opened in 2017. Robbie told Vanity Fair last November that her movie, written by “Birds of Prey” scribe Christina Hodson, had been dropped, adding, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while,...

Over eight years after the commercial failure of “Blackhat,” director Michael Mann is putting the blame where he feels it belongs: Michael Mann.
While promoting the upcoming Adam Driver vehicle “Ferrari” in an interview with Variety, the filmmaker briefly fell on his sword concerning the $70 million R-rated actioner. In January of 2015, it earned mixed-to-negative reviews and just $20 million at the global box office.
“It’s my responsibility,” Mann told the publication. “The script was not ready to shoot.” Like many of Mann’s pictures, “Blackhat” has gained a cult audience since its theatrical release, as well as a restructured director’s cut. While Mann blames himself, it also ran into the newfangled notion of audiences not wanting to see a big new movie star outside of his marquee character role.
Moviegoers didn’t care about Chris Hemsworth — talent and charisma notwithstanding — when he wasn’t playing Thor in the MCU.

Hollywood star Emily Blunt could’ve joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, in Iron Man 2. The actress is now opening up about what she thinks of Scarlett Johansson who ended up playing the role across multiple films.
“Come on, the best girl got it,” Blunt said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about Johansson adding that she was “amazing”, reports Deadline.
Johansson would go on and reprise the superhero role in films like ‘The Avengers’ (2012), ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ (2014), ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (2015), ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016), ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018), ‘Captain Marvel’ (2019), ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) and the standalone ‘Black Widow’ movie in 2021.

Once again. “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) ($5.99) is #1 at iTunes and Google Play, while “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at $19.99 (Universal) is #1 at Vudu.
Like most weeks, Netflix’s top 10 movie list is topsy-turvy. New at #1 is “Run Rabbit Run,” an Australian horror film the streamer acquired out of the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section. It stars “Succession” actress Sarah Snook as a fertility doctor who notices her daughter’s strange behavior.
Beyond that, “Mario” is in two second-place spots while “Fast X” is #2 at Vudu, helped by its $19.99 price. “The Covenant” (MGM) is #3 at iTunes, “The Machine” (Sony) at $19.99 #3 at Vudu, with “Fast X” taking third at Google Play.

Do not adjust your phone screen. You are not experiencing deja vu. Netflix’s list of new releases for July 2023 does indeed look quite a bit like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest new arrival this month is the conclusion of The Witcher season 3 on July 27. It seems like only 29 days ago that The Witcher season 3 premiered. And that’s because it was! Now Henry Cavill’s arc as Geralt of Rivia is set to officially end with this batch of three episodes. Get ready for the Liam Hemsworth era, Witcher fans. Other Netflix Original series of note in July 2023 are The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 on July 6, Sonic Prime season 2 on July 13 and the animated comedy Captain Fall on July 28.
Meanwhile it’s a big month for Netflix’s original movies department. Adam Devine-starring comedy The Out-Laws premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Bird Box...

The Unholy is a horror movie directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It is based on the novel written by James Herbert.

Do you know what's the only quest tougher than Frodo traveling all that way to cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom? Attempting to one-up the wildly successful first season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." After introducing us to a brand-new batch of characters and getting all the necessary table-setting out of the way, season 2 appears set to pick up where the finale left off and run with it. The first step to realizing that ambition, of course, means adding even more major players to the ensemble. Less than a week after the first batch of new names were announced to join the sophomore effort of this epic fantasy streaming series, yet another group of actors have joined the cast in what's being described as recurring roles.

One of two major fantasy television hits this year came in the form of a Lord of the Rings show. Amazon’s The Rings of Power boasted huge numbers when the big-budget series premiered. It’s 1997, and 12 year old Grace (Niamh Walter) is joining her friend Asta (Nyobi Hendry) and Asta’s mother Kate (Rebecca Palmer) on a summer holiday to Cornwall. On the cusp of adolescence, Grace and Asta often play like children, but Grace in particular seems to want to move beyond more childish things. Meanwhile, Kate takes in a younger man named Sid (Zaqui Ismail), who had been sleeping in the woods.
At the heart of Summer in the Shade is a relatively simple coming of age story, much of it centred on Grace’s clear admiration for Kate. At various moments we see Grace surreptitiously observing the older woman, and especially her growing flirtation with Sid, but the major visualisation of this theme comes late on when, after an argument with Asta, Grace puts on some of Kate’s red lipstick, takes her case of cigarettes (or joints?) and walks to the local village.

In 2012, a dark retelling of the popular Snow-White source material was released that starred Kirsten Stewart as the title character and Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman. Snow White and The Huntsman turned out to be a box office success, so naturally, executives decided to milk this cash cow dry by making a prequel with The Huntsman as the main protagonist. It follows Freya and the rise of an army of huntsmen as her protectors. The Huntsman: Winter’s War saw a terrible critical reception upon release, garnering an abysmal 20% score on rotten tomatoes. More importantly, the film had a

What would spooky season be without the Sanderson Sisters? Thanks to Freeform, we’ll never have to find out.
The cable network’s annual 31 Nights of Halloween lineup features 14 showings of Hocus Pocus, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — and while that may seem like a lot, keep in mind that Freeform aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019. (Of course, you can watch Hocus Pocus as many times as you’d like with a subscription to Disney+, but who are we to suggest a commercial-free viewing experience?)

Kate has been getting a lot of buzz since it premiered on Netflix earlier this week.
It's hard to be believe it's only Cedric Nicolas-Troyan's third film and his second feature (his first was The Huntsman: Winter's War). His first film was the zany short Carrot vs. Ninja.
The short is billed as "a quick tale of violence" and you can watch it below.

Netflix's "Kate" doesn't hide its influences -- it wears them loudly and proudly. For director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, those references aren't the films the trailer suggests. It's certainly no "Crank" or an excellent old-school noir, "D.O.A.," but was inspired by the anime Nicolas-Troyan consumed as a kid in France, long before his days as a soldier and visual effects supervisor.
Nicolas-Troyan worked on "One Hour Photo," "The Ring," and "The Weatherman" before he finally took a seat in the director's chair. His feature debut was "The Huntsman: Winter's War," but "Kate" is perhaps closer to his personal taste and style. It's a hitman...

Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays a killer with 24 hours to live in a familiarly plotted yet diverting enough Japan-set thriller
There’s nothing particularly inventive about the Netflix action thriller Kate – from the director of The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan – the streamer’s umpteenth bullets over brains offering this year, but there’s also nothing particularly heinous in its execution, a to-the-point two-hour slab of pulp that slickly glides above a very low bar. The platform’s flatly directed, often incompetently choreographed churn of action content has meant that a sudden whiff of style and a glimpse of an actual location suddenly jolts one from a drift of sleep to a mild amount of attention.

“You’re a Terminator,” Tokyo teen Ani (Miku Patricia Martineau) gapes to Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) after witnessing the bloodshed her kidnapper has brought down on two dozen yakuza now lying shot, stabbed, sizzled on a yakitori grill and very, very dead. Kate, the titular antihero of director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan’s vicious vengeance flick, is a grown-up child assassin trained by her mentor (Woody Harrelson) in the art of death, a fate so common among on-screen orphans that their support group could fill a church basement. Yes, she can rack up quite the Schwarzenegger-esque kill count. But Kate’s Terminator resemblance also includes her left eye’s red and distended pupil, evidence of the polonium poisoning that will kill her in 24 hours. Other symptoms of this gimmick include blistered skin, pounding eardrums, wobbly knees and an urgency to take an entire gangster clan along with her to the grave. There is no cure.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has already showed that she’s more than capable of leading an action movie, thanks to her supporting role as Huntress in the DC Comics tentpole “Birds of Prey,” and now she’s getting the star vehicle she deserves with Netflix’s ticking-clock assassin thriller “Kate.” Winstead stars in the eponymous role opposite Woody Harrelson. The movie was helmed by French director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, perhaps best known to U.S. audiences for directing the “Snow White and the Hunstman” sequel “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.”
The official synopsis for “Kate” from Netflix reads: “Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she’s been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers.

"Kate, you're like that person in that nightmare - take no sh*t from no dudes." Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for a new action movie called Kate, the latest feature made by the VFX supervisor-turned-director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who last directed the sequel The Huntsman: Winter's War. There’s no time for mercy. After she's poisoned, a ruthless criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and in the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims. This seems like a killer action concept mashing up Kill Bill and Jolt with Gunpowder Milkshake, but with Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring as the action badass Kate in this one. In addition to Mew, the impressive full cast also includes Tadanobu Asano, Miyavi, Michiel Huisman, plus Jun Kunimura and Woody Harrelson, and introducing Miku Martineau. The best thing about this is that it's set in Japan.

The devil wouldn’t be seen dead in Prada in Disney’s latest live action reboot – a delve into the origin story of iconic 101 Dalmatians villainess Cruella de Vil. Born Estella (she will grow into “Cruella” later), you suspect Emma Stone’s budding fashion designer would find Prada way too basic, her punk rock tastes leaning more towards Vivianne Westwood in its attitude and aesthetic. She looks amazing. She’s a provocateur, an icon, a genius and a master show woman. What she isn’t is someone you could ever imagine killing a puppy, but more on that later.

As the actor rejects the idea of joining the MCU in Fantastic Four, how long can mainstream Hollywood stars resist the spandex?
Why doesn’t Emily Blunt want to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sue Storm, Aka Invisible Woman and a powerful, leading member of the Fantastic Four? We might point to the execrable nature of every single previous big screen adaptation featuring the awesome foursome, but Marvel Studios were not in charge of those movies and have proved themselves more than capable of successfully bringing other superhero ex-pats (such as Spider-Man and the Hulk) back into the fold in recent times.
Could it be that the English actor feels such a far-out and fluffy fantasy role would be beneath her? That seems unlikely, given she has starred as Mary Poppins for Marvel owner Disney, as well as in misfiring 2016 swords-and-sorcery The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

"Has Hollywood developed an allergy to originality?" A good question! This was made in 2012, and it first premiered in 2014, but it's still as relevant as ever nine years later. Allergy to Originality is an amusing animated short film about a conversation between two people at a movie theater. It's about originality, or really, it's a defense of the lack of originality insomuch as referencing the truth that pretty much every idea or thought is a derivation of something else / someone else's thoughts. This short was created in 2012, and the marquee features some of the biggest movies that summer: Men in Black 3, Madagascar 3, Prometheus, Dark Shadows, The Avengers, and Snow White (and the Huntsman). Featuring the voices of Ian Picco and Spencer Thun. I don't entirely agree with all the points made in this, but it is interesting to consider. And there's also a good follow-up interview with filmmaker...

“The Unholy” is a good tight scary commercial theological horror film. Its spooks and demons unfurl within a pop version of Christianity, which makes it sound no more exotic than last week’s “Exorcist” knockoff or last year’s helping of the “Conjuring” franchise. But “The Unholy” has a religious plot that actually works for it. It stars an unheralded actress named Cricket Brown — mark my words, she’s going to go on to major things — who plays a deaf-mute young woman named Alice, who has visions of what she thinks is the Virgin Mary. Absorbing Mary’s spirit, Alice can suddenly hear and speak, and she can heal the sick, which attracts crowds of people to her rural town of Banfield, Mass. “The Unholy” is adapted from a 1983 James Herbert novel, and as written and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos it could almost be a faith-based horror film. Good and...

No budget is given for the 26-part half hour series. Its combination, however, of elements which make for high-end entertainment – period costume, action and foreseeable heavy Vxf – suggest this is another big play by two of Europe’s champions of ambitious live-action kids shows.
One is Cottonwood Media, the kids and family production company at Paris and L.A -based Federation Entertainment whose credits include Studiocanal’s Cannes 2019 pre-sales movie hit “Around the World in 80 Days,” to be screened at Berlin.
The other, Zdf and Zdfe, has a storied recent history in live action kids shows. “Theodosia” will “continue our successful Zdf live action productions such as ‘H2O,...

Craig Mazin has extended his overall deal with HBO and HBO Max for an additional three years.
The news comes as little surprise, given the success Mazin has had at HBO. He previously created the critically-acclaimed HBO limited series “Chernobyl,” which detailed the aftermath of the titular Soviet nuclear disaster in 1986. The show, which starred Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård, won two Golden Globes and 10 Emmy Awards in 2019. Mazin also won a Writers Guild, Producers Guild, and Peabody Award for his work on the show.
HBO also recently gave out a series order to “The Last of Us,” an adaptation of the hit video game of the same name. Mazin is set to write and executive produce the upcoming series along with Neil Druckmann, the writer and creative director of the game. The series order was announced in November.

Vital Pictures, an upstart independent production company from Chris Lemos and Luis Guerrero, will produce and distribute the World War I drama “The War Below” from director J.P. Watts, TheWrap can share exclusively.
“The War Below” stars “Peaky Blinders” and “The Innocents” actor Sam Hazeldine alongside Tom Goodman-Hill, Kris Hitchen, Douglas Reith and Sam Clemmett.
The film will be produced and distributed by Vital Pictures in the U.S., a source told TheWrap, making it the company’s third project after the horror-thrillers “Beneath Us” and “You’re Not Alone.”
“The War Below” is based on true events and centers on a group of British miners recruited during WWI to tunnel underneath no man’s land and set bombs from below the German front, all in the hopes of breaking the deadly stalemate of the Battle of Messines.
Watts, known for the short film “The Lost Emperor,” is making his feature-length directorial debut on the film.
