Between filming close to three seasons of Sons of Anarchy, shooting his documentary series Kurt Sutter's Outlaw Empires, and setting the wheels in motion for his upcoming FX show The Bastard Executioner, screenwriter Kurt Sutter found time to make Southpaw, a wrestling movie and his first feature film. With its release just one day away, John Horn, host of the Kpcc radio show and podcast “The Frame,” sat down with Sutter to discuss the differences between film and TV writing, Southpaw's major casting swap (from Eminem to Jake Gyllenhaal), the struggles of writing past stereotypes, and why Gyllenhaal's performance is worthy of everyone's time. I wanted to talk about your body of work, and this may be kind of too broad a generalization, but I'm going to try it anyway. Part of what you do and have done is to take stereotypes and put a human face on [them], often...

Kurt Sutter, the colorful creator/executive producer of FX’s Sons Of Anarchy, has signed with Wme. He was with ICM Partners. Last year, Sutter inked his first overall deal: a three-year pact with FX Prods and 20th Century Fox TV, whose division Fox21 co-produces Soa with FX Prods. In addition to running Soa, which is heading into its sixth season, Sutter has been developing new projects for FX, including a comedy that may star his wife/Soa star Katey Sagal and an action/horror drama with John Shiban. Last year, the Shield alum executive produced Kurt Sutter’s Outlaw Empires for Discovery Channel. He continues to be repped by attorney Michael Gendler.

A big, ugly helping of Kurt Sutter brilliance has hit the web for fans to gnaw on. The creator of Sons of Anarchy, Sutter has appeared in our rag on many an occasion. Now he gives us more cause to wave his banner, as he’s released a sneak peek of the Outlaw Empires episode dealing with the Aryan Brotherhood.
Perverse as it is to be gleeful about a video account of a jailhouse stabbing, we can trust this true crime to be top notch given Sutter’s involvement. The man has a masterful even-handed approach to telling the stories of ne’er-do-wells.
Though his current claim to fame is, indisputably, Sons of Anarchy, Kurt Sutter can’t be mentioned without calling out the show that secured his rise to prominence, The Shield. Sutter has made a name for himself in cable drama with his ability to illustrate sophisticated outlaws.

Sons of Anarchy writer-creator Kurt Sutter is going big with the final episode of his Discovery Channel docuseries Outlaw Empires. In the last episode of the six-part effort, Sutter will examine the men who comprised the Aryan Brotherhood. "The challenge for us," Sutter says, "is to tell the objective story of an outlaw organization that has an association with perhaps the most hated political regime in the history of the world." Discovery's new series "Kurt Sutter's Outlaw Empires" has provided some compelling looks inside criminal subcultures, and Monday's (June 4) episode continues in that vein. "Sons of Anarchy" creator Sutter takes a look at one of the most notorious crime organizations in history: the Italian Mafia.
In this clip from the episode, which you can see exclusively on Zap2it, former Gambino crime family associate Dominick Montiglio describes how he set up a hit on a fellow mobster in Brooklyn in the 1970s. The re-enactment is pretty strong, but what makes it so chilling is Montiglio's remembrance of his action, and how he waited up all night to hear the explosion.
We're also struck by the fact that Montiglio apparently had few qualms about killing someone he'd known since childhood, but had the target not gone to his car that night, he would have returned to dismantle the makeshift car bomb...

In the Sons of Anarchy Season 4 finale, we saw Tig run over and kill a woman who turned out to be the daughter of notorious gangster Damon Pope, and we’ve just learned who will playing this pivotal role in the upcoming fifth season. Surprisingly, its not someone I would immediately associate with the crime world, but that mostly has to do with the actor’s previous roles. With that in mind, it’s a good thing they’ve cast someone you might not immediately think of for the part. It means we’ll be getting a different performance than we’re used to, which is never a bad thing.
And the man that’s been tapped to play pope is none other than Lost’s Harold Perrineau. TVLine reported the actor’s casting, which was the second major casting for Season 5 of Sons of Anarchy. The first was the...
