A 3D special preview of Sholay directed by Ramesh Sippy and screening of Mumbai Cha Raja by Manjeet Singh will mark Indian presence at the 36th Asian American International Film Festival. The festival will run in New York from July 24th to August 3rd.
The 3D version of the 1975 film Sholay will be screened at The Museum of the Moving Image on August 15 to celebrate 100 Years of Indian Cinema on the country’s Independence Day.
“If there is ever a Bollywood film that deserves a 3D treatment, it is Sholay, the celebrated ‘curry-western’ takes on a Sergio Leone film that itself plays off Hollywood’s Westerns and Kurosawa’s samurai dramas. Considered one of the greatest Hindi films of all time, Sholay is a vastly entertaining Indian action-musical-adventure melodrama about two small-time thieves on a reward hunt to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar,” mentions the festival’s website.

Mumbai Cha Raja director Manjeet Singh takes his next project Chenu to L’ Atelier of the Cinefondation at Cannes film festival. L’Atelier hand picks projects from all over the world and invites the directors and their producers to meet potential partners during the festival. Manjeet Singh talks about his upcoming project:
What was the starting point for “Chenu”?
During my college days, I found it baffling that genocides were happening in Bihar because of the ongoing caste war. I was puzzled: Would someone kill a human, just because he belongs to another caste? I was puzzled even further when a close friend of mine proudly acknowledged, “My uncle belongs to a landlord gang that kills dalits”. It made me wonder, how come this friend of mine, who grew up in Bombay-far away from Bihar- can have such a feudal mindset.

There was a time in Indian cinema, the era of the masters like Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy and Mrinal Sen, when it was not unusual to have several Indian films in competition at the Cannes film festival. Take for instance the year 1956 when Ray’s Pather Panchali and Shantaram Athavale’s Shevgyachya Shenga competed in the feature film category. Or the year 1954 when Bimal Roy’s Do Beegha Zameen and Kishore Sahu’s Mayurpankh were in competition along with two short films by Mohan Dayaram Bhavnani. [Read India’s tryst with Cannes]
The last Indian film that got selected in competition was Shaji Karun’s Swaham way back in 1994. I n 2012–the year Indian cinema turned 100–it showed renewed vigour and youthfulness as if it were being reborn. A new generation of young and restless filmmakers, who caught attention of festival programmers worldwide, rewrote the rules of not only mainstream cinema but also challenged what Indians traditionally believed an “alternative film” or at times labeled as “art film” stood for.
We use the term ‘independent’ to denote the attitude rather than the economic mode of production. That’s why films that are backed by major studios and the government as well as films which have been funded in completely non-traditional ways co-exist in our list.
Any such list can’t claim to be authoritative and scientific; however, what we claim is that our listing isn’t arbitrary. We took into consideration factors such as selection at A-list festivals, popularity among festivals in general, awards, jury mentions, international reviews, international distribution and domestic release.

Manjeet Singh
Manjeet Singh shot “Mumbai Cha Raja” in guerilla style in the slums of Mumbai and almost got arrested. He had a story but not a bound script, his actors were not tested for acting but were chosen because their real life experiences were closer to that of his characters. With borrowed money from friends and relatives and no bound script; Manjeet took a plunge into filmmaking and it took him places – the film had its world premiere at Toronto Film Festival 2012 and now is headed to Abu Dhabi where it will compete in the New Horizons section.
In this post Manjeet Singh shares what he learnt while making “Mumbai Cha Raja”
Your Script:
Script is an important aspect, but you may not necessarily strictly adhere to it. Film grows and is re-written during the production stage and again in the edit. Even the sound design helps in its growth.

Cameron Bailey, the artistic director of Toronto International Film Festival calls Mumbai Cha Raja a film that can change the image that Slumdog Millionaire created of Mumbai. It deals with the lives of two street kids Rahul and Arbaaz.
Manjeet Singh, who has also been selected for Toronto Talent Lab, talks about his debut film which awaits world premiere in the City-to-City programme at Toronto International Film Festival:
What is Mumbai Cha Raja about?
It’s a salute to the spirit of the under privileged kids of Mumbai who find joy in things which might seem trivial to the society, and enjoy life to the fullest, in-spite of the problems they face.
What was the starting point for the film?
It was a cumulative effect of my childhood memories: a feature script I had written about the kids who sing in Mumbai local train; desire to capture the beauty...
