The Glorious Loris
owen-watts20 November 2020
There are few animals on the planet as adorable as a Slow Loris and it's grand to have them star in a documentary of their own. This tonally inconsistent film both straddles the research of Dr (now Professor) Nekaris into the function and nature of their strange venom as well as giving a glimpse into what adversity and struggles there are in Indonesia for them. Its "Gremlins" title leads to some dated "spooky" editing foolishness and it has a somewhat ominous narration from the great Paul McGann but it gradually descends into stark reality and ends in a rather sombre and sudden fashion. The travails of Nekaris are quite compelling and as a central figure there is perhaps no one more equipped to discuss them - looking her up afterwards I was very pleased to see that she is still assuredly deeply vociferous on the Loris and you can follow the continued efforts at the "Little Fireface Project".
