Every summer, just when it starts to feel like you’d rather give up on movies forever than trek to the multiplex for yet another blockbuster sequel or remake, the New York Asian Film Festival shows up out of nowhere and saves the day — for New Yorkers, anyway. Unquestionably the country’s best (and most demented) annual showcase of new Asian cinema, Nyaff has established itself as a perennial godsend for cinephiles whose appetites are a bit too adventurous for Hollywood to satisfy, and the festival’s 18th edition — dubbed “Eighteen: Still Too Young to Die” in a cheeky reference to the Kudo Kankuro movie that blew the roof off in 2016 — might be its most promising lineup to date.
This year’s Nyaff kicks off with Bernard Rose’s “Samurai Marathon,” which is an 1850s-set jidaigeki about a bunch of samurai running a marathon. Not that anyone could possibly need more reason to see it,...

After a stellar freshman season, the return of “Dear White People” for Season 2 was always going to be one of our anticipated premeires of 2018. But even though this new batch of episodes experiments with its form and has a new framing device for these ten half-hours, there’s one thing that has stayed consistent over the series’ run: a fantastic soundtrack.
Mixing songs from across the decades, this is one Netflix show that has a little bit for everyone: Edvard Grieg, DeJ Loaf, Tyler, the Creator, and Andy Williams, all in one big musical happy family.
Some of these tracks will lodge themselves in your subconscious for the coming weeks and months (that Louis Cole track in Episode 2 is a nuclear-grade earworm). Others will have you flipping through the entire back catalogue. There’s even one song that plays a key role within the show, even if it’s not sung by the original artist.

Benedict Cumberbatch narrates this thoughtful documentary about zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, whose teachings have popularised the mindfulness movement
It is a relief, and a palate cleanser, to watch a documentary concerned with quietness, stillness and contemplation. Yet however slowly paced, a film’s grammar and rhythm will perhaps never truly approach the structure of solitude and contemplation that is the point here. Walk With Me is a study of the 91-year-old Vietnamese zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, and his retreat in Plum Village in south-west France. His teachings are credited with the phenomenal success of mindfulness and the spiritual concentration on the present moment.
The rich, mannered voice of Benedict Cumberbatch, a longtime admirer, recites Hanh’s writings. There are long, calm takes of visitors to the retreat, and the monks – who have refrained from worldly pleasures – in permanent situ. The film has some startling moments, particularly...

A year ago, it seemed like a great time for documentaries. “I Am Not Your Negro,” Raoul Peck’s eviscerating look at race in America, was a cultural touchstone, reaching over 300 theaters across the country and earning over $7.4 million at the box office. At Sundance, buyers paid big money for nonfiction films like “Long Strange Trip” (Amazon, $6 million), “Icarus” (Netflix, $5 million), and “Step” (Fox Searchlight, $4 million), among others.
And then, one by one, big-ticket docs failed to live up to box-office expectations. “Step” earned just over $1.1 million; Sundance Grand Jury Prize doc winner “Dina” grossed only $90,503 after seven weeks in release; Oscar-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman’s highly acclaimed Syrian activist doc, “City of Ghosts,” made only $128,015; while other highly topical and critically lauded films, such as “Whose Streets?,” “The Force,” “Trophy,” and “Risk” failed to draw a significant audience.
Theatrical ticket sales don’t tell the whole story; many docs find audiences on streaming services.
