Channing Tatum, a natural athlete who found that college was not to his liking, moved to Tampa in his teens to work construction and found an outside gig as a male stripper at night. To Tatum’s credit, he never denied his stripping gig but instead turned it into artistic gold (years after he became an actor) with a hit franchise you may have heard about: “Magic Mike” (2012), “Magic Mike Xxl” (2015) and “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023).
After being discovered by a talent scout, Tatum started his career with small movie parts until he snagged the lead in “Step Up,” (2006), a successful dance/romance mash-up. Tatum’s looks and athleticism, as well as his dancing and acting skills attracted casting directors, who began to place him in bigger and bigger films.
With Tatum’s skills, that led to films with better and better directors, a list that any actor would envy...

Young actor and musician Donald Glover, also known by his musician stage name Childish Gambino, is one of the most prominent names of Hollywood’s younger (not youngest!) generation. The actor and musician made his career in 30 Rock when he was just 23, after which he had successful appearances in the Community and Atlanta. He also appeared in several movies, including The Lazarus Effect, Magic Mike Xxl, The Martian, as well as Solo: A Star Wars Story, where he played the young Lando Calrissian.
Aside from his personal appearances, Glover has done a lot of voice work as well, including voicing Simba in the CGI version of The Lion King. He also appeared as Aaron Davis (Uncle Aaron) in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse; reprising his live-action cameo from the Spider-Man: Homecoming, although it was a minor live-action role in both of these movies.

Everyone’s favorite comedian, Gabriel Iglesias, is best known for poking fun at himself about his weight and his hilarious observations on everyday life. Starting all the way back in 1997, Iglesias has since gone on to produce and star in various films and TV shows like Mr. Iglesias and Magic Mike Xxl. He’s also performed his comedy routines in sold-out arenas and even has his very own stand-up specials on Netflix. If you’ve seen any of Iglesias’ comedy specials, you’ll know that his routines are mostly filled with stories about his family, his dog, and, of course, his infamous lowrider.

Has there been a greater bait-and-switch in recent memory than "Magic Mike"? The trailers for director Steven Soderbergh's 2012 dramedy -- itself loosely based on star Channing Tatum's real-life experiences as an "exotic dancer" -- promised to deliver a whole lot of male stripper shenanigans for a fun Friday night of frivolity. The actual film, on the other hand, was a far more sobering look at not just the reality of what life is like as a professional stripper but also the economic hardships faced by working-class individuals like Tatum's Michael "Magic Mike" Lane in the wake of the 2007 financial crisis. In his defense, Soderbergh likened the film to a Robert Altman joint ahead of its release, so you can't exactly accuse him personally of trojan-horsing anyone.
The second "Magic Mike" film, "Magic Mike Xxl," hewed closer to what audiences expected from the first movie. Helmed by Soderbergh's longtime assistant director Gregory Jacobs,...

Welcome to a discussion about the Magic Mike franchise, a series that’s danced its way through cinema with a blend of charm, drama, and, well, quite a bit of stripping. The original Magic Mike was a surprise hit back in 2012, loosely based on Channing Tatum’s early career experiences and raking in an impressive $167 million against a $7 million budget. With such an unexpected success, expectations soared for the sequels. Yet, as we’ve seen with Magic Mike Xxl and now with Magic Mike 3, titled Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the path hasn’t been quite as smooth as the dance...

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Were one to ignore the courtroom-set events over the past handful of years that have served to define the personal life of Amber Heard, it would be hard to deny the fact that, despite a few run-of-the-mill performances, most notably as Mera in her various Snyderverse appearances such as “Aquaman, “the ex-Mrs. Johnny Depp has a decent level of talent onscreen, ranging from the horror of “All The Boys Love Mandy Lane” to the comedy of “Pineapple Express” to the sultry drama of “Magic Mike Xxl.” “In The Fire” could be considered another example of her potential, an imperfect lead role in a film that brazenly emulates a type of film seen countless times since “The Exorcist” spawned countless imitators in the half-century since.

It would come as no surprise to learn that “Back on the Strip” started out as a “Magic Mike” parody. I’m not saying that it did. But what else could explain the bizarrely literal premise of an ensemble indie comedy in which our hero is a wannabe magician who heads to Vegas hoping to be the next David Copperfield, only to wind up shaking his wand for a Chippendales-style male dance revue instead?
What makes “Strip” so consistently funny for most of its too-long two-hour running time isn’t Merlin’s lame prestidigi-dream (that part feels like co-writers Chris Spencer and Eric Daniel have been watching too many Nickelodeon movies) but the sorry state of his fellow dancers: a has-been crew called the Chocolate Chips. That fairly original hook allowed the filmmakers to round up an A-list lineup for this C-grade endeavor. The movie features everyone from Tiffany Haddish...

It’s Me, Margaret begins in 1970 with 11-year-old Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson) getting the worst news any New York City-raised child can get: her family is moving to New Jersey. It’s not only that Margaret will have to leave behind her wise-cracking grandmother Sylvia (Kathy Bates) or her friends or school, but that being 11 years old often means everything is the end of the world. The crushing despair that makes adolescence feel like a rueful eternity is Fremon Craig’s specialty. – Fran H. (full review)

In the series, co-created by Santa Clarita Diet creator Victor Fresco, the elder Lowe plays successful biotech entrepreneur Ellis Dragon who is struggling after the death of his wife. John Owen Lowe plays his introverted son, Jackson, who seems to be the only one who can save his dad.

Jada Pinkett Smith once had a lead role in the second Magic Mike movie. The film not only helped round out her filmography, but it also helped with personal issues. Magic Mike showed her how to deal with a side of her husband Will Smith that she wasn’t always tolerant of.

Magic Mike Xxl was the 2015 sequel to the original Magic Mike starring Channing Tatum. The film told the story of a group of male strippers, with Pinkett Smith playing the owner of a male strip club. Tatum offered Pinkett Smith the role, who was intrigued by the film’s themes. Especially since its story was an uncommon one in cinema.
“Channing came to me and asked ‘How can we make adult entertainment responsible and fun?...

“A Man Called Otto” (Sony/$14.99) was a flop as an adult-appeal awards contender, but it came out on top of VOD charts the week before the Oscars. Challenging its dominance is a strong performance by “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” (Crunchyroll/$9.99), which took #1 at Google Play while “Otto” led at Vudu and iTunes.
Netflix has an eye-popping nine theatrical releases on its top 10, including six studio sequels. Among those are four separate “Hunger Games” franchise entries, despite those films spending years in constant basic-cable rotation.
Neither “Otto” nor “Dragon” spent much time at a premium price. Sony quickly dropped the price of “Otto” from its initial $19.99. “Dragon,” from the Sony-owned Japanese anime label Crunchyroll, was introduced as a $9.99 purchase. It opened in U.S. theaters last August, the same week that “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village” opened to over $10 million.

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (Laura Poitras)
It is a fascinating thing to watch someone’s history of protest and addiction collide and conspire to hold a pharmaceutical company accountable and expose its parent family as reprehensible. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras profiles the renowned photographer and activist Nan Goldin and her fight through the AIDS and opioid crisis, but this is bigger than a biographical documentary. Through slideshows, interviews, and family videos, Poitras weaves a riveting, heartbreaking interconnected story of generational pain, its influence over the blurry boundaries between life and art. – Jake K-s.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more unlikely trilogy in recent memory than "Magic Mike." When Steven Soderbergh's original movie hit theaters in 2012, audiences went in anticipating a frivolous good time, only to be treated to a surprisingly thoughtful, nuanced examination of stripper culture and the economic realities of life in the post-Financial Crisis world. Three years later, "Magic Mike Xxl" zagged in a different direction, combining road trip hijinks with a sex-positive rumination on women's needs and male camaraderie.
The tale of Michael "Magic Mike" Lane (Channing Tatum) has now been brought to a close with "Magic Mike's Last Dance," which also has Soderbergh back in the director's chair. True to its name, the film sees Channing Tatum's eponymous retired stripper turned furniture business owner hit the stage one last time to produce a play -- and maybe something more -- in London with the aid of a...

Channing Tatum has enjoyed a very successful career in Hollywood, with leading roles in dozens of hit movies. However, he is best known for the Magic Mike franchise, loosely based on his own past as a stripper. With the release of his brand-new film, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Tatum is making the rounds and discussing how much the series means to him — and why he will always have a special place in his heart for the state of Florida, where he spent his formative years.

March is a time for madness, whether it comes from basketball, Mercury retrograde, or a person’s home streaming habits. Netflix joins in on the chaos by updating its library with all three “Hangover” movies, a whole lot of workout content, “Magic Mike Xxl,” and much, much more.
On March 9, the streamer will premiere Part 2 of “You” Season 2, starring Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, and Ed Speleers. The five remaining episodes find Joe (Badgley) trapped in a volatile dance with London mayoral candidate and serial killer Rhys (Speleers), trying to prevent more murders but also not go down for the many he’s committed in the process. The trailer shows Joe and Kate (Ritchie) growing closer, more brushes with Kate’s wealthy socialite friends, and the return of Victoria Pedretti as Joe’s wife Love — or maybe the ghost of his wife, and of sins past.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance, starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek was released in theaters on February 10, 2023.
Magic Mike became something of a phenomenon back in 2012. The film was loosely based on the life of Tatum and his experience in the world of male stripping. It was a critical and commercial success.
The movie was followed up in 2015 by its first sequel, Magic Mike Xxl, also starring Tatum. The story picked up three years after Mike quit the stripper life.
Now he’s back in the third and final installment, Magic Mike’s Last Dance.

The big game tends to take a lot of attention away from most other things on "Super Bowl" weekend, meaning that it's usually a somewhat quiet weekend at the box office. This year was no exception, though we did wind up with a new champion in the form of "Magic Mike's Last Dance." Indeed, in his last go around as Magic Mike, Channing Tatum got to go out on top, rounding out this somewhat unlikely trilogy on a high (ish) note. The only problem is that the movie took the crown with just 8.2 million per Box Office Mojo. That is quite a bit lower than the openings for both "Magic Mike" (39.1 million) and "Magic Mike Xxl" (14.5 million). It probably didn't have to be this way though.
Warner Bros. only released the film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, on 1,500 screens, while the original opened on just shy of 3,000 screens, while "Xxl" played on 3,355 screens.

Super Bowl weekend has never been great for the box office, with only a few breakout hits over the years. This year, it was especially bad, and as usual, weekend estimates are exactly that: estimates, since it’s too early to determine how this year’s big game night affect Sunday box office.
Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault starred in “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third and presumably final chapter of the male stripper franchise with returning director, Steven Soderbergh. Warner Bros. only gave the movie a moderate release into only 1,500 theaters, while reviews were not great, sitting at 46 on Rotten Tomatoes. Warners didn’t report the movie’s Thursday previews or Friday take, which was later reported to be 4.1 million. Based on WB’s Sunday estimates, “Magic Mike” only made 8.2 million this weekend, averaging 5,467 per location, which was still enough to be the #1 movie over Super Bowl weekend.

His name is Magic. Magic Mike. And this Valentine's Day, he'll be here to entertain you. Described by screenwriter Reid Carolin as "Pretty Woman" meets "All That Jazz," "Magic Mike's Last Dance" sees Channing Tatum's Mike return to his roots as a male entertainer by launching a stage show in London based on his experiences. Steven Soderbergh returned to direct the threequel after being inspired by the real "Magic Mike" stage show on London's West End.
The original "Magic Mike," released in 2012, was a surprisingly big box office hit on a relatively small budget, and "Magic Mike Xxl" was also a money-maker, albeit with smaller returns. That trend looks set to continue with "Magic Mike's Last Dance." Per Variety, the film has grossed 8.2 million across 1,500 domestic theaters in its opening weekend at the box office, the lowest debut of the franchise so far.

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us and as we all gear up for tonight’s big game between the NFL’s number 1 defense (Philadelphia Eagles) and number 1 offense (Kansas City Chiefs), allow us to dive into this weekend’s box office results where Magic Mike’s Last Dance took first place with a pretty underwhelming 8.2 million. I guess there is no way to sugar coat it, I was Way off in my predictions! I thought this was a highly anticipated movie that fans would rally behind, especially when you consider it wasn’t originally meant to get a theatrical release. With a 40 million budget and an estimated 20 million in marketing costs it doesn’t seem likely this trilogy capper will break even at the box office. Add to that the fact that this one is the worst reviewed of the three films (with our own Chris Bumbray giving it a...

Magic Mike’s Last Dance won Super Bowl weekend at the domestic box office with an estimated 8.2 million, the lowest showing of the three films in the Channing Tatum franchise.
However, Last Dance is playing in far fewer theaters — 1,550 cinemas is a modest number for a high-profile studio release — since it was made for streaming and not the big screen. And its screen average of 5,467 was more than twice that of the last film.
The box office always takes a hit because of the Super Bowl on Sunday. Hollywood studios generally avoid releasing event pics, or movies that target males. (The Magic Mike series, which comes out in advance of Valentine’s Day, has always skewed heavily female.)
Overseas, the threequel started off with 10.4 million from its first 18 markets for a global start of 18.6 million.

“Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third chapter in Channing Tatum’s steamy stripper series, topped a glacial Super Bowl weekend at the box office, generating a decent 8.2 million from only 1,500 North American theaters.
It’s the lowest start yet in the decade-old franchise following 2012’s “Magic Mike” (which opened to 39 million) and 2015’s “Magic Mike Xxl” (which opened to 12.8 million). The first two installments were huge commercial hits, ultimately grossing 167 million and 117 million respectively on economical budgets. The threequel is available on half the number of screens as its predecessors and collected 5,467 per location, the best theater average in the top five.
The third movie, in which Tatum returns as a stripper with a heart of gold, wasn’t intended to play in theaters at first. The Warner Bros. release, which was directed by Steven Soderbergh and co-stars Salma Hayek Pinault, was commissioned for HBO Max and granted a production...

Audiences are ponying up for “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which is projected to lead a quiet Super Bowl weekend at the domestic box office.
The third “Magic Mike” entry earned roughly 4.1 million in opening day and Thursday preview screenings, with industry sources projecting a debut around 8 million. Warner Bros. itself isn’t reporting numbers.
There are a few question marks surrounding the debut of “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which is receiving a limited release in 1,500 North American locations. Though the film was commissioned for an HBO Max release, Warner Bros. swerved to go theatrical — the studio did the same for its comedy remake “House Party” in January, which also opened in less than 2,000 theaters and has earned a slim 8.8 million.
While “Last Dance” is making a bigger splash than “House Party,” it’ll finish with an opening down from its 2012 original (39.1 million) and 2015 sequel “Magic Mike Xxl”. Critical consensus is...

Some early numbers have begun rolling in and it looks like Channing Tatum’s rock solid abs have managed a first place finish as Magic Mike’s Last Dance is looking to do around 11 million for the weekend. That is slightly off from my over-zealous 14 million prediction, of course it is still possible for this threequel to over index on Sunday (which is generally a dead day at the box office due to the Super Bowl). Magic Mike’s Last Dance marks the second film Warner Brothers saved from a streaming only fate to give a full theatrical push even if that “full” push is only on 1500 screens.
If that 11 million opening holds it would represent a franchise worst opening (2012’s Magic Mike opened to 39.1 while 2015’s Magic Mike Xxl managed 12.8 million). That would match with this being the worst reviewed film of the franchise (at 46 on Rotten Tomatoes compared to Magic Mike...

Channing Tatum is looking at another opening at No. 1 in his canon of February theatrical releases with the Warner Bros Steven Soderbergh directed threequel Magic Mike’s Last Dance with industry estimates between 9M-11M at 1,500 theaters. Warner Bros is not reporting numbers. Friday is around 4.3M which includes an estimated 1M previews that started at 5Pm. The pic is squarely aimed at women over Super Bowl weekend, a time when box office falls on Sunday.
While this is the second title Warner Bros is pivoting from HBO Max to an exclusive theatrical release after New Line’s House Party, there’s a lot of intrigue in regards to how far this branded movie can go in its limited release of 1,500 locations. On the low-end, the pic’s weekend opening would be higher than the Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson theatrical-day-and-date Universal romantic comedy from a year ago, Marry Me (7.9M). At the high end,...
